  • Inductive power transfer (IPT) is an attractive power transmission solution that is already used in many applications. In the IPT system, optimal coil design is essential to achieve high power efficiency, but the effective design method is yet to be investigated. The inductance formula and finite element method (FEM) are popular means to link the coil geometric parameters and circuit parameters; however, the former lacks generality and accuracy, and the latter consumes much computation time. This study proposes a novel coil design method to achieve speed and generality without much loss of accuracy. By introducing one-turn permeance simulation in each FEM phase combined with curve fitting and optimization by MATLAB in the efficiency calculation phase, the iteration number of FEM can be considerably reduced, and the generality can be retained. The proposed method is verified through a 100 W IPT system experiment.

  • Purpose : In the treatment of MRSA infection, rapid detection of MRSA is extremely important. The mecA gene codes the new drug resistant polypeptides called PBP2' which mediates the clinically relevant resistance to all beta-lactam antibiotics. The identical mecA gene has been found in coagulase-negative staphylococcus with the methicillin-resistant phenotype. On the other hand, the femA gene was absent from coagulase negative staphylococcus strains with the methicillin resistant phenotype. This study is aimed at early detection and definite diagnosis of MRSA. Methods : A total of 24 MRSA strains were studied. All strains were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and purified DNA. We amplified both mecA and femA genes by PCR in 24 strains. Results : In MRSA all the 16 strains (100%) carried femA gene and 11 strains (68.7%) carried mecA gene. In contrast, in methicillin sensitive staphylococcus all the 8 strains (100%) carried femA and only 3 strains (37.5%) were detected mecA. Conclusions : As results, there are difference in the phenotype and genotype of methicillin resistance by PCR of mecA and femA. Such disparities between methicillin resistance and the presence of mecA gene suggest the presence of control gene of the mecA.

  • This paper presents the FEM anlysis results performed to assess the applicability of Horizontal Jet Grout Roofing, and of ground improvement methods for tunneling in soft ground. Horizontal Jet Grount Roofing Method is applicable to ensure the stability of tunnel face in non-cemeted alluvial strata under high ground water pressure. For applying this method, to ensure the reliability, the Horizontel Jet Grout Roofing should be double lined with pre-grouting to reduce the water inflow during the jet grouting.

  • This paper reports the development of an analysis method in a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) using the finite element method (FEM) coupled with the electromagnetic field of the Preisach model, which represents an additional thermal source due to hysteresis loss and a thermal field. This study focused on thermal analysis relative to hysteresis and copper losses in a SynRM.

  • In this paper, we proposed windmill type ultrasonic motor which has modified shape of Endcap. The motor was especially designed by FEM for high speed. As results, displacements of the windmill and the clover type motor was compared. Using clover type motor, more smooth rotation of rotor was achieved. If Z component of the displacement of the clover type motor can be applied for linear motor.

  • The object-oriented programming languages are widely used in the modern software engineering. The procedural type FEM codes are still used because it is very hard and cost consuming job to re-code them into object-oriented programs. In this study, a FEM program was newly designed and coded with C++, an object-oriented language. Also a special programming technique, auto-loading technique was developed for open structured program, with which the extension and maintenance can be carried out easily. For example, the additions of element libraries to an existence FEM program do not require any modifications of the program.

  • OBJECTIVES : The objective of this research is to determine the integrity of pavement structures for areas where voids exist. Furthermore, we conducted the study of voided-area analysis and remaining life prediction for pavement structures using finite element method. METHODS : To determine the remaining life of the existing voided areas under asphalt concrete pavements, field and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests were conducted. Comparison methods were used to have better accuracy in the finite element method (FEM) analysis compared to the measured surface displacements due to the loaded trucks. In addition, the modeled FEM used in this study was compared with well-known software programs. RESULTS : The results show that a good agreement on the analyzed and measured displacements can be obtained through comparisons of the surface displacement due to loaded trucks. Furthermore, the modeled FEM program was compared with the available pavement-structure software programs, resulting in the same values of tensile strains in terms of the thickness of asphalt concrete layers. CONCLUSIONS : The study, which is related to voided-area analysis and remaining life prediction using FEM for pavement structures, was successfully conducted based on the comparison between our methods and the sinkhole grade used in Japan.

  • Bridges using double-tee (DT) girders from 12 m to 15 m are one of the good choices to improve accessibility in rural areas of the Mekong River Delta. In this study, nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis was conducted with different constitutive laws of materials. The FEM analysis results were compared to experimental results to confirm the applicability of the constitutive laws of materials for DT girders. A parametric study through FEM analysis was then conducted to investigate the effect of span lengths, top flange depths, and a number of prestressing tendons on the capacity of DT girders in order that propose DT girders for rural bridges. Parametric results showed that the top flange depth of a DT girder for rural bridges could be 120 mm. The DT girder with a span length of 12 m or 13 m could be used 16 tendons, while the DT girder with a span length of 14 m or 15 m could be set up with 20 tendons. The prestressed concrete DT girders based on FEM results can be suggested for the construction of rural bridges.

  • In this paper, review was made for the excavation method and optimum bench length for unstable tunnel face in case of rock classification type V in order to make the best use of in-situ bearing capacity. 3D FEM analyses were performed to investigate the influences on the tunnel face and adjacent area with regard to the pattern and number of bolts when face bolts were used as a supplementary measure. As a result of this study, full section excavation method with sub-bench is effective in reducing the displacement greatly due to early section closure. Displacement-resistant effects in accordance with the bolting patterns are grid type, zig-zag type and then circular type in order of their effect. And horizontal extrusion displacement of tunnel face reduces as the number of bolts increase. A grid type face bolt covering $1.5m^2$ of tunnel face could secure the face stability in case of full section excavation method with sub-bench.
