Metal flow of the beam blank during H-beam rolling was examined in order to correlate the rolling defects with the beam blank configuration. For this purpose, H-beam rolling was performed on the beam blank where stainless steel bolts were inserted as the marker at the web and flange. The positional variation of the marker was monitored at each rolling pass, and the result was compared with the 3D FEM simulation employing the point tracking function. The simulation results were reasonably agreed with the experimental within the error of 0.5~1mm on both web and flange of the H-beam. It is anticipated that the 3D FEM simulation employing the point tracking function provides the guidance information on analyzing the correlation between the rolling defects and the beam blank configuration in H-beam rolling.
Recently, applications of integrated large composite structures have been attempted to many structures of vehicles. To improve the cost performance and reliability of the integrated composite structures, it is necessary to judge structural integrity of the composite structures. For the judgement, we need fracture simulation techniques for composite structures. Many researches oil the fracture simulation method using FEM have been reported by now. Most of the researches carried out simulations considering only matrix cracking and fiber breaking as fracture modes, and did not consider delamination. Several papers have reported the delamination simulation, but all these reports require three-dimensional elements or quasi three- dimensional elements for FEM analysis. Among fracture mechanisms of composite laminates, delamination is the most important factor because it causes stiffness degradation in composite structures. It is known that onset and propagation of delamination are dominated by the strain energy release rate and interfacial moment. In this study, laminated composite has been described by using 3 dimensional finite elements. Then impact behavior of the laminated composite is simulated using FEM(ABAQUS/Explicit) with progressive failure mechanism. These results are compared with experimental results.
Laser beam welding of zinc-coated steel, especially lap joints, has a problem of zinc vapor produced during welding which has a low vaporization temperature of 906.deg. C. It is lower than the melting temperature of steel (1500.deg. C). The high pressure formed by vaporization of zinc during laser welding splatters the molten pool and creates porosities in weld. During laser lap welds of zinc-coated steel sheets with CW CO$_{2}$ laser the gap size has been analyzed and simulated using a FEM. The simulation has been carried out in the range of gap aetween 0 and 0.16 mm. The vaporized zinc gas has effected to prevent heat from conducting toward the bottom of sheets. In vaporized zinc gas has effected to prevent heat from conducting toward the bottom of sheets. In the case of too small gap size, zinc gas has not ejected and existed between two sheets. Therefore heat was difficult to conduct from the upper sheet to lower sheet and the upper sheet could over-melted. In the case of large gap size the zinc gas has been prefectly ejected but only a part of lower sheet has melted. The optimum range of gap size in the lap welds of zinc-coated steel sheets has been calculated to be between 0.08 and 0.12 mm. According to the comparison of experiment, the simulation is proved to be acceptable and applicable to laser lap welds.
This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.
Temperatures of engine head and liner depend on many factors such as spray and combustion process, coolant passage flow and engine related structures. To estimate the temperature distribution of engine structure, multi-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes have been mainly adopted. In this case, it is of great importance to obtain the realistic wall temperature distribution of entire engine structure. In the present work, a CFD-FEM coupling methodology was presented to address this demand. This approach was applied to a real large-size marine diesel engine. CFD combustion and coolant flow simulations were coupled to FEM temperature analysis. Wall heat flux and wall temperature data were interfaced between combustion simulation and solid component temperature analysis via translator by a commercial CFD package named FIRE by AVL. Heat transfer coefficient and surface temperature data were exchanged and mapped between coolant flow simulation and FEM temperature analysis. Results indicate that there exists the optimum cell thickness near combustion chamber wall to reasonably predict the wall heat flux during combustion period. The present study also shows that the effect of cell refining on predicting in-cylinder pressure during combustion is negligible. Hence, the basic guidance on obtaining the wall heat flux needed for the reasonable CFD-FEM coupling analysis has been established. It is expected that this coupling methodology is a robust tool for practical engine design and can be applied to further assessment of the temperature distribution of other engine components.
A strain-gradient crystal plasticity finite element method(SGCP-FEM) was utilized to simulate the compressive deformation behaviors of single-slip, (111)[$10{\bar{1}}$], oriented FCC single-crystal micro-pillars with two different slip-plane inclination angles, $36.3^{\circ}$ and $48.7^{\circ}$, and the simulation results were compared with those from conventional crystal plasticity finite element method(CP-FEM) simulations. For the low slip-plane inclination angle, a macroscopic diagonal shear band formed along the primary slip direction in both the CP- and SGCP-FEM simulations. However, this shear deformation was limited in the SGCP-FEM, mainly due to the increased slip resistance caused by local strain gradients, which also resulted in strain hardening in the simulated flow curves. The development of a secondly active slip system was altered in the SGCP-FEM, compared to the CP-FEM, for the low slip-plane inclination angle. The shear deformation controlled by the SGCP-FEM reduced the overall crystal rotation of the micro-pillar and limited the evolution of the primary slip system, even at 10 % compression.

Flow characteristics in linear axial cascade have been studied using large eddy simulation(LES) based on finite element method(FEM) to investigate details of the leakage flow in the tip clearance of axial flow rotor. STAR-CD(FVM) and PAT-Flow(FEM) have been adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow. Numerical results from the present study have been compared with the existing experimental results to investigate a tip clearance effect on velocity profile and static pressure distribution on blade surface at various spanwise positions. Both simulation results agree well with the experimental data. However, it has been shown that the results of finite-element large-eddy simulation agree better with experimental data than $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on finite volume method regarding the tip vortex geometry and static pressure distribution at the center of the tip vortex core. As a result of this study, it is shown that finite-element large-eddy simulation method can predict more exactly on the tip leakage vortex flow and behind flow field.
Multi layer bellows are being manufactured for commercial vehicle because of the characteristic of high durability compared with single iaγor bellows used to passenger vehicle. Finite Element Method (FEM) study and optimization about single layer bellows are actively progressed, but FEM study about multi layer bellows which have gap between layer is rarely processed. Therefore, this article presents finite element modeling of multi layer bellows for the improvement of simulation reliability. For the shape optimization of multi layer bellows, design of experiment and Taguchi method are used.
In the frontal collision the spot welded hat-shaped section side member is the fundamental structure for automobiles and has a great amount of absorbing capacity. For this reason LS-DYNA3D has been used for analyzing impact collapse characteristics on hat shaped section member with respect to the valuables; thickness, width ratio and spot weld potch on impact load(7.19m/sec, 1034J). By comparing the results from simulation and the experimental results, the utilization of simulation has been certified.

The objective of the study is to predict the moment anchorage capacity of the concrete filled steel box (CFSB) as footing by using the 3D finite element program CAMUI developed by authors' laboratory. The steel box is filled with concrete and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column is inserted in the box. Numerical simulation of the experimental specimens was carried out after introducing the new constitutive model for post peak behavior of concrete in compression under confinement. The experimental program was conducted to verify the reliability of the simulation results by the FE program. The simulated peak loads agree reasonably with the experimental ones and was controlled by concrete crushing near the column. After confirming the reliability of the FEM simulation, effects of different parameters on the moment anchorage capacity of concrete filled steel box footing were clarified by conducting numerically parametric study.
