The prediction of the inelastic behavior of the structure is an essential part of reliability assessment procedure, because most of the failures are induced by the inelastic deformation, such as creep and plastic deformation. During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and a lot of inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. These equations consist of the definition of inelastic strain and the evolution of the state variables introduced to quantify the irreversible processes occurred in the material. With respect to the definition of the inelastic strain, the inelastic constitutive models can be categorized into elastoplastic model, unified viscoplastic model and separated viscoplastic model and the different integration methods have been applied to each category. In the present investigation, the generalized integration method applicable for various types of constitutive equations is developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The solution of the non-linear system of algebraic equations arising from time discretization with the generalized midpoint rule is determined using line-search technique in combination with Newton method. The strategy to control the time increment for the improvement of the accuracy of the numerical integration is proposed. Several numerical examples are considered to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the present method. In this paper, a magnetic flux leakage(MFL) based steel bar damage detection was first researched to quantify the signals from damages on the wire rope. Though many researches inspecting damages using a MFL method was proceeded until the present, the researches are at the level that diagnose whether damages are or not. This has limitation to take measures in accordance with the damage level. Thus, a MFL inspection system was modeled using a finite element analysis(FEM) program dealing with electromagnetism problems, and a steel bar specimen was adopted as a ferromagnetic object. Then, an experimental study was also carried out to verify the simulation results with a steel bar which has same damage conditions as the simulation. The MFL signals was nearly not affected by the increase of the inspection velocity, and the magnitudes of the signals are not identical according to the change of the defect width even the defects have same depth. On the basis of the analysis, the signal properties from the damages were extracted to classify the type of damages, and it could be confirmed that classification of damages using extracted signal properties is feasible.

Recently, the number of systems which utilize wireless power transmission to a receiving module in a short distance is increasing. For efficient use of receiving space, coils are wound around the ferrite core to produce electromotive force(emf) in suppling power by wireless transmission. This paper analyzed the magnetic flux density distribution in the ferrite core in magnetic field environment which is uniformly oriented along to a single axis at 125kHz. For numerical analysis, Ansoft Maxwell which is applying the FEM(Finite Element Method) method was used. We studied the variations of the gathered magnetic fluxes to the changes of the relative permeabilities of the ferrite cores. Also we calculated the magnetic flux variation by shaving the ferrite core off for the groove of coil winding. Results showed that using a small ferrite core in magnetic field at 100kHz band can increase the amount of magnetic flux $3{\sim}4 times$ than without the core. The magnetic flux decreased 23% by shaving the core 0.5 mm on the periphery of 4.75 mm radius core with the relative permeability 800.
A new material, carbon-nanofiber/polypyrrole (CNF/PPy) composite films, with different CNF weight ratios were fabricated electrochemically. Compared to the fabrication process based on simple physical mixing, the flexibility of the new film has been improved much better than the previous similar material. Pure PPy films were also fabricated by the new electrochemical process for the comparison of difference. Several SEM images were taken at two locations (electrode-side and solution-side) and at the cross section of the samples. Electrical conductivity of the composite films was measured by the four-probe method. The conductivity of the pure PPy film 0.013cm thick was 79.33S/cm. The CNF/PPy composite film with 5% CNF showed a conductivity of 93S/cm. One with 10% CNF showed a conductivity of 126 S/cm. The conductivity of PPy improves, as the CNF weight ratio increases. The good conductivity of CNF/PPy composites makes them a candidate for a small bending actuator. A bending sensor consists of PPy and PVDF, which can be operated in the air, was designed and the bending deflection was calculated using FEM.
Operative interventions for the management of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) include core drilling, with or without vascularized fibular bone grafting. Nevertheless, their clinical results have not been consistently satisfactory. Recently, a new surgical procedure that incorporates cementation with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) after core drilling has been tried clinically. In this study, a biomechanical analysis using a finite element method(FEM) was undertaken to evaluate surgical methods and their underlying surgical parameter. Our finite element models included five types. They were (1) normal model (Type I), (2) necrotic model (Type II), (3) core decompressed model (Type III). (4) fibular bone grafted model (Type IV), and (5) cemented with PMMA model (Type V). The geometric dimensions of the femur were based on digitized CT-scan data of a normal person. Various physiological loading conditions and surgical penetration depths by the core were used as mechanical variables to study their biomechanical contributions in stress transfer within the femoral head region. In addition. the peak von Mises stress(PVMS) within the necrotic cancellous bone of the femoral head was obtained. The fibular bone grafted method and cementation method provided optimal stress transfer behaviors. Here. substantial increase in the low stress level was observed when the penetration depth was extended to 0mm and 5mm from the subchondral region. Moreover, significant decrease in PVMS due to surgery was observed in the fibular bone grafted method and the cementation method when the penetration depths were extended up to 0 and 5mm from the subchondral region. The drop in PVMS was greater during toe-off than during heel-strike (57% vs. 28% in Type IV and 49% vs. 22% in Type V). Both the vascularized fibular bone grafting method (Type IV) and the new PMMA technique (Type V) appear to be very effective in providing good stress transfer and reducing the peak Von-Mises stress within the necrotic region. Overall results show that fibular bone grafting and cementation methods are quite similar. In light of above results, the new cementation method appears to be a promising surgical alternative or the treatment of ONFH. The use of PMMA for the core can be less prone to surgical complication as opposed to preparation of fibular bone graft and can achieve more immediate fixation between the core and the surrounding region.

To fabricate a metal mold for injection molding, hot-embossing and imprinting process, mechanical machining, electro discharge machining (EDM), electrochemical machining (ECM), laser process and wet etching ($FeCl_3$ process) have been widely used. However it is hard to get precise structure with these processes. Electrochemical etching has been also employed to fabricate a micro structure in metal mold. A through mask electrochemical micro machining (TMEMM) is one of the electrochemical etching processes which can obtain finely precise structure. In this process, many parameters such as current density, process time, temperature of electrolyte and distance between electrodes should be controlled. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the result because it has low reliability and reproducibility. To improve it, we investigated this process numerically and experimentally. To search the relation between processing parameters and the results, we used finite element simulation and the commercial finite element method (FEM) software ANSYS was used to analyze the electric field. In this study, it was supposed that the anodic dissolution process is predicted depending on the current density which is one of major parameters with finite element method. In experiment, we used stainless steel (SS304) substrate with various sized square and circular array patterns as an anode and copper (Cu) plate as a cathode. A mixture of $H_2SO_4$, $H_3PO_4$ and DIW was used as an electrolyte. After electrochemical etching process, we compared the results of experiment and simulation. As a result, we got the current distribution in the electrolyte and line profile of current density of the patterns from simulation. And etching profile and surface morphologies were characterized by 3D-profiler(${\mu}$-surf, Nanofocus, Germany) and FE-SEM(S-4800, Hitachi, Japan) measurement. From comparison of these data, it was confirmed that current distribution and line profile of the patterns from simulation are similar to surface morphology and etching profile of the sample from the process, respectively. Then we concluded that current density is more concentrated at the edge of pattern and the depth of etched area is proportional to current density.

This study is about atherosclerosis which occupies the highest rate in many diseases people have and we have studied about atherosclerosis for abdominal aorta. Atherosclerosis is the phenomenon which blood vessel gets narrower, harder and thicker due to the stenosis of colesterol in blood vessel. If it becomes worse, arteries will be hard and blood can't flow smoothly, and even it can reach to death. In this study, the geometric models of the considered stenotic blood flow are two different types of constriction of cross-sectional area of blood vessel; 20 and 45% of constriction in each elastic wall and rigid wall. We have modeled by using finite element method to observe the changes of velocity and pressure. In case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in elastic wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20% and in case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in rigid wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20%. In cases of elastic wall models of the diameters of blood vessels decreased each of 20% and 45%, recirculation zones appeared. This results show understanding of hemodynamic properties depending on stenosed blood vessels.

As increasing number of large-size earthquake, the social interest of seismic retrofitting of RC structure is growing. Especially, the RC columns that are not reflected seismic design can not resist lateral loads by the earthquake. The brittle fracture of Non-seismic designed columns lead to full collapse of the building. Thus, the emergency columns reinforcement method is needed. That have a fast construction time, do not cause damage to the column. In the past, cross-sectional expansion method, a steel plate reinforcing method is applied mainly, but in recent years, carbon fiber sheet taking advantage of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is widely used. In this study, retrofitting effect of seismic performance of FRP seismic reinforcement, which is possible to emergency construction, was examined. Reinforced concrete specimens were constructed to experimental study. The seismic performence of specimes retrifitted with FRP seismic reinforcement were evaluated. As a result, the seismic performance of specimen reinforced with FRP seismic reinforcement has been improved.

Gas avalanche microdetectors, such as micro-strip gas chamber (MSGC), micro-gap chamber (MGC), micro-dot chamber (MDOT), etc., are operated under high voltage to induce large electron avalanche signal around micro-size anodes. Therefore, the anodes are highly exposed to electrical damage, for example, sparking because of the interaction between high electric field strength and charge multiplication around the anodes. Gas electron multiplier (GEM) is a charge preamplifying device in which charge multiplication can be confined, so that it makes that the charge multiplication region can be separate from the readout micro-anodes in 9as avalanche microdetectors possible. Primary electron collection efficiency is an important measure for the GEM performance. We have defined that the primary electron collection efficiency is the fractional number of electron trajectories reaching to the collection plane from the drift plane through the GEM holes. The electron trajectories were estimated based on 3-dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM). In this paper, we present the primary electron collection efficiency with respect to various GEM operation parameters. This simulation work will be very useful for the better design of the GEM.
Ballasted track on an asphalt roadbed can be beneficial for its various effects such as (i) decreasing of roadbed thickness by dispersing train load; (ii) prevention of both strength reduction and weakening in roadbed system by preventing rainwater penetration; and (iii) reducing maintenance cost by preventing roadbed mud-pumping and frostbite. With these beneficial effects, ballasted track on asphalt roadbed has been widely used in Europe and Japan, and relevant research for applying such ballasted track on asphalt roadbed systems in Korea is ongoing. In this study, full-scale static and dynamic train load tests were performed to compare the performance of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed and ballasted track. The optimum thickness levels of asphalt and reinforced roadbeds, corresponding to the design criteria for reinforced roadbed of high-speed railway, was estimated using the FEM program ABAQUS. Test results show that the earth pressure on reinforced roadbed of ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed was relatively low compared with that of simple ballasted track. The elastic and plastic displacements of simple ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed were also lower than those of ballasted track. These test results may indicate that the use of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed is an advantageous system in view of long-term maintenance.
