  • Influences of stiffness distributions on hydroelastic responses of very large floating structures (VLFS) are studied in this paper. Hydroelastic responses are calculated by direct method employing higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) for fluid analysis and finite element method (FEM) for structure analysis. In structural analysis using FEM, Mindlin plate elements are used. An 1 km-long VLFS with uniform stiffness and modified VLFS with varying stiffness distributions are considered in numerical analysis. Responses of VLFS increase in flexible parts and decrease in stiff Parts. Reduction degree of displacements of VLFS with stiffened center is larger than that of VLFS with stiffened sides.

  • This paper presents the effect on the inelastic behavior and structural performance of concrete and filled steel pipe through a numerical method for reliable judgment under various load conditions of the CJS composite structural system. Variable values optimized for the CJS synthetic structural system and the effects of multiple variables used for finite element analysis to present analytical modeling were compared and analyzed with experimental results. The Winfrith concrete model was used as a concrete material model that describes the confinement effect well, and the concrete structure was modeled with solid elements. Through geometric analysis of shell and solid elements, rectangular steel pipe columns and steel elements were modeled as shell elements. In addition, the slip behavior of the joint between the concrete column and the rectangular steel pipe was described using the Surface-to-Surface function. After finite element analysis modeling, simulation was performed for cyclic loading after assuming that the lower part of the foundation was a pin in the same way as in the experiment. The analysis model was verified by comparing the calculated analysis results with the experimental results, focusing on initial stiffness, maximum strength, and energy dissipation capability.

  • In this paper, the forced vibration of damped composite beam with I-type section was analyzed. The damping material was assumed to have complex Young's modulus. Damped composite beam structure could be modeled using equivalent beam elements with less D.O.F. rather than solid elements. Finite element method for 6 D.O.F. equivalent beam element was formulated and programmed using complex values. The results of frequency responses revealed good agreement with those of NASTRAN in both Euler beam model and Timoshenko beam model.

  • In the UV-NIL process using an elementwise patterned stamp (EPS), which includes channels formed to separate each element with patterns, low-viscosity resin droplets with a nano-liter volume are dispensed on all elements of the EPS. Following pressing of the EPS, the EPS is illuminated with UV light to cure the resin; and then the EPS is separated from several thin patterned elements on a wafer. Experiments on UV-NIL were performed on an EVG620-NIL. 50 - 70 nm features of the EPS were successfully transferred to 4 in. wafers. Especially, the wafer deformation during imprint was analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) in order to study the effect of the wafer deformation on the UV-NIL using EPS.

  • In this article, we consider a weighted CVT-based reduced-order modelling for Burgers equation. Brief review of the CVT (centroidal Voronoi tessellation) approaches to reduced-order bases are provided. In CVT-reduced order modelling, we start with a snapshot set just as is done in a POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition)-based setting. So far, the CVT was researched with uniform density ($\rho$(y) = 1) to determine the basis elements for the approximatin subspaces. Here, we shall investigate the technique of CVT with nonuniform density as a procedure to determine the basis elements for the approximating subspaces. Some numerical experiments including comparison of two CVT (CVT-uniform and CVT-nonuniform)-based algorithm with numerical results obtained from FEM(finite element method) and POD-based algorithm are reported.

  • Multi-tasking machines are widely used in machine tool industries nowadays. This study focuses on the effect of load on the structure stabilities of laser multi-tasking machine which is comprehensively combined turning center and laser machine. For design of the machine, simulation of structural analysis is carried out varying number of elements. The analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using the commercial software, CATIA V5. This method showed a proper number of elements can be selected to obtain good result by reduced computation time.

  • We apply a partitioned-solution (iterative-staggered) coupling method based on a fixed Eulerian mesh with the level set function to a large-deformation fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem where a large-deformable thin structure moves in a high-speed flow field, as an airbag does during deployment. This method combines advanced fluid and structure solvers-specifically, the constrained interpolation profile finite element method (CIP-FEM) for fluid Eulerian mesh and large-deformable structural elements for Lagrangian structural mesh. We express the large-deformable interface as a zero isosurface by the level set function, and introduce virtual nodes with level sets and structural normal velocities to generate the level set function according to the large-deformable interfacial geometry and enforce the kinematic condition at the interface. The virtual nodes are located in the direction normal to the structural mesh. It is confirmed that application of the method to unfolded airbag deployment simulation shows the adequacy of the method.

  • A high speed feeding type laser cutting UC is developed for the precise cutting of sheet metal. The M/C is a flying optics type one with specified functions of movability and strength in order to increase workability. The gantry frame should be moved with a certain velocity within a relatively short time for the proper cutting of object materials. The gantry is actuated by rack and pinion. In this paper, modal and structural analysis for a laser culling M/C, is carried out in development of the machine The machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements and fictitious mass properties to represent the real one.

  • Since the crack generation and its propagation caused by welding defects is one of the main hull damage patterns, the simulation of crack propagation process has an important significance for ship safety. Based on interface element method, a finite element model to simulate crack propagation is studied in the paper. A Lennard-Jones type potential function is employed to define potential energy of the interface element. Tensile tests of steel flat plates with initial central crack are carried out. Surface energy density and spring critical stress that are suitable for the simulation of crack propagation are determined by comparing numerical calculation and tests results. Based on a large number of simulation results, the curve of simulation correction parameter plotted against the crack length is calculated.
