  • The computation time of FEA(finite element analysis) for one model may range from a few seconds up to several hours according to the complexity of the simulated model. If these FEA is used to calculate the objective and the constraint functions during the optimal solution search, it causes very excessive execution time. To resolve this problem, the distributed computing technique using internet web service is proposed in this paper. And the dynamic load balancing mechanisms are established to advance the performance of distributed computing. To verify its validity, this method is applied to a traditional mathematical optimization problem. And the proposed FEA-based optimization using internet distributed computing is applied to the optimal design of the permanent magnet dc motor(PMDCM) for automotive application.

  • Time domain response analysis for vibro-impact nonlinear behavior of multi-span tube with loose supports was performed using commercial FEA code and user subroutine. Support geometry of multi-span tube with a finite gap is realistically modeled by analytical rigid surface. Model of hydrodynamic force is based on the Qusai-steady model which accounts for the inclined angle of relative flow velocity and time delay between flow force and resulting tube motion. During tube vibration from flow loading, impact and friction at the support location is simulated using commercial FEA code with master slave contact algorithm. Analysis results has reasonable agreement with those of references and test experience. Plan of further refinement of analysis model and future test verification is briefly introduced.

  • Failure modes of Mo-tip FEA were investigated in detail as a preliminary study for the application of Mo-tip FEA to the CRT electron-gun as a cold cathode. It was identified that the destruction of Mo-tip FEA was originated from reflowing of arc-current during the spot-knocking process followed by secondary arc between gate electrode and cathode substrate. In order to prevent Mo-tip FEA from destruction due to arc-current, two kinds of methods were suggested, that is one is to provide the by-pass of the reflow current and the other is to install a current limiter in the path of gate connection line.

  • A FEA model is proposed to study the effects of fiber waviness on tensile/comprssive nonlinear behaviors of thick unidirectional composites. In the analyses both material and geometical nonlinarities are considered. The predicted results from the FEA model are compared with those obtained from the previous analytical model (thin carpet model) Tensile/compressive tests are also conducted on the specimens with various controlled fiber waviness to obtain the nonlinear behaviors of composites experimentally. The predictions from the FEA model show better agreements with the experiments than those from the analytical model.

  • We present a torsion analysis of single-bent leaf flexure that is partially restrained, subject to a torsional load. The theoretical equations for the torsional angle are derived using Castigliano's theorem. These equations consider the partially restrained warping, and are verified using finite element analysis (FEA). A sensitivity analysis over the length, width, and thickness is performed and verified via FEA. The results show that the errors between the theory result and the FEA result are lower than 6%. This indicates that the proposed theoretical torsional analysis with partially restrained warping is sufficiently accurate.

  • The purpose of this paper is to address the structural integrity of the stem disc T-head connection of the motor operated valve assembly by comparing the previously developed methodology with the finite element analysis(FEA). From the experiences of the previously performed weak link analysis, the most of "weak links" when valve is opened are stem-disc T-head connections, and the bearing stress on the disc is the dominant stress. The results of FEA are compared with that of the classical approaches of the weak link analysis. The higher allowable thrust be represented by performing the elastic-plastic FEA.

  • We describe a stress analysis of a single leaf flexure under torsion in which the warping effect is considered. The theoretical equations for the warping normal stress (${\sigma}_{xx}$) and shear stresses (${\tau}_{xz}$ and ${\tau}_{xy}$) are derived by applying the warping function of a rectangular cross-sectional beam and the twist angle equation that includes the warping torsion. The results are compared with those of the non-warping case and are verified using finite element analysis (FEA). A sensitivity analysis over the length, width, and thickness is performed and verified via FEA. The results show that the errors between the theory of warping stress results and the FEA results are lower than 4%. This indicates that the proposed theoretical stress analysis with warping is accurate in the torsion analysis of a single leaf flexure.

  • This paper describes the finite element analysis(FEA) for the design of electromagnet for Control Element Drive Mechanism(CEDM) in System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor(SMART) and compared with the lifting power characteristics of prototype electromagnet. A thermal analysis was performed for the electromagnet. A model for the thermal analysis of the electromagnet was developed and theoretical bases for the model were established. It is important that the temperature of the electromagnet windings be maintained within the allowable limit of the insulation. since the electromagnet of CEDM is always supplied with current during the reactor operation. So the thermal analysis of the winding insulation which is composed of polyimide and air were performed by finite element method. As a result, it is shown that the characteristics of prototype electromagnet have a good agreement with the results of FEA. The thermal properties obtained here will be used as input for the optimization analysis of the electromagnet.

  • In many CAD systems, NURBS has been employed to construct exact geometries. Recently, NURBS finite element analysis methods were proposed by some authors for convenient connection between CAD and finite element analysis. Additional advantages of NURBS FEA, such as exact geometry and no mesh generation, are obtained. However, NURBS is inefficient in local refinement and merging patches. For refinement of local region in interest, additional control points should be inserted into the entire row or column which contains the local region. There is another inefficiency of NURBS during merging patches into a large structure due to propagation of control points. In order to overcome these inefficiencies of NURBS, T-spline was proposed by Sederberg. In this work, T-spline based finite element method is proposed for efficient local refinement and merging patches. At first, accuracy and efficiency of NURBS FEA is verified and efficiency of T-spline FEA is verified by comparing with NURBS FEA.
