This study proposes a finite element (FE) model for predicting the bending strength of small gears used in electro-mechanical actuators for aircraft. First, a strain gauge was attached to the tooth root of test gear, and the strain was measured. Subsequently, the FE model was applied to calculate the strain of the test gear, and the modeled strain was compared with the experimental strain. The results confirmed that the FE strain was very close to the experimental strain and the FE model was valid. This FE model was extended to the bending strength analysis of several small gear tooth models. The bending strengths of all the tooth models were almost identical to the ISO theoretical bending strength. Finally, the FE model was validated and the reliability of the modeled bending strength was evaluated through the strain measurement experiment.
In this study, a new constitutive model has been developed to predict the elastic behavior of plain weave textile composites, using the finite element (FE) method. The geometric conditions and basic assumptions of this model are based on the basics of a continuum theory developed for the plane curved composites. In this model, the mechanical properties of the weave region and pure matrix region is calculated separately and then imported for the FE analysis. This new constitutive model is used to implement the mechanical properties of weave region in the representative volume element (RVE). The constitutive relations are implemented as user-material subroutine code (UMAT) in ABAQUS® FE software. The results of FE analysis have been compared with experimental results and other data available in the literature. These comparisons confirmed the capability of the presented model for the prediction of effective elastic properties of plain weave fabric composites.

The source transfer receiver model ('Source $\times$ Transfer = Response' model) which is widely used by NVH development process of vehicle/transport/machinery to analyze effectively and manage efficiently the structural dynamic behavior is also applicable to construction structure. If the evaluation assessment of the vibration level does not meet the target level, there are two methods, one is source treatment or replacement and the other is the reduction treatment on the transfer structure. In case of source treatment, it is done by source supplier and so, the latter is more practical method to reduce the vibration level. In this study, in order to get the accurate Transfer FE model(floor structure FE model), Experimental modal analysis of part of floor structure and FEM modal analysis of full floor structure are performed, then updating of FE model is performed after correlation analysis between these two results and finally, the modal model and FRF are compared between FE and Experimental results.

This paper attempts to develop a connection model based on FE analysis that can be applied to the evaluation of earthquake fragility of Steel Storage Racks lacking research in Korea. In order to accomplish this goal, shaking table tests, modal tests, and various member tests (8 case, push-over test) for structural members have been conducted to understand the behavior of steel storage racks. Based on the experimental results, detailed modeling of the joints was conducted using the NX-Nastran program in order to develop a connection model for Steel storage racks to be applied to the seismic vulnerability assessment. Especially, surface to surface contact element and spring element are applied to simulate the connection between the column member and the beam member connected by the simple latch method. Spring element model developed and applied ARX (Auto Regressive eXogenous) based mathematical model. The simulation results based on the FE model showed excellent reliability with a mutual error rate of less than 8% when compared with the member test results. As a result, it was confirmed that the FE model based connection model developed in the study can be applied to the analytical model for the seismic vulnerability assessment of Steel storage racks.
To study oceanic and meteorological problems related to climate change, Korea has been operating several ocean research stations (ORSs). In 2011, the Gageocho ORS was attacked by Typhoon Muifa, and its structural members and several observation devices were severely damaged. After this event, the Gageocho ORS was rehabilitated with 5 m height to account for 100-yr extreme wave height, and the vibration measurement system was equipped to monitor the structural vibrational characteristics including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios. In this study, a mass reallocation method is presented for structural model updating of the Gageocho ORS based on the experimentally identified natural frequencies. A preliminary finite element (FE) model was constructed based on design drawings, and several of the candidate baseline FE models were manually built, taking into account the different structural conditions such as corroded thickness. Among these candidate baseline FE models, the most reasonable baseline FE model was selected by comparing the differences between the identified and calculated natural frequencies; the most suitable baseline FE model was updated based on the identified modal properties, and by using the pattern search method, which is one of direct search optimization methods. The mass reallocation method is newly proposed as a means to determine the equivalent mass quantities along the height and in a floor. It was found that the natural frequencies calculated based on the updated FE model was very close to the identified natural frequencies. In conclusion, it is expected that these results, which were obtained by updating a baseline FE model, can be useful for establishing the reference database for jacket-type offshore structures, and assessing the structural integrity of the Gageocho ORS.

In this study, we propose a 3D finite element (FE) model for the residual stress under oblique shot peening. Using the FE model for an oblique impact, we examine the effects of factors on the residual stress such as the Rayleigh damping in the material, dynamic friction, and the rate dependency of the material and systematically integrate the effects. The plastic deformation of the shot is also emphasized. Then, the FE model is used to study oblique multi-impacts. The results obtained using the FE model are compared with experimental x-ray diffraction (XRD) results; in contrast to the rigid and elastic shots, plastic shots are found to produce residual stresses similar to that shown in the XRD results. Thus, the 3D FE models with integrated factors and plastically deformable shots are validated. The proposed model will serve as a basis for the 3D FE model for multi-impacts with different impact angles to simulate the actual phenomenon of shot peening.
In this paper, the process of extruding Cu-10Fe alloy using a finite element analysis (FEA) was theoretically analyzed. To achieve this, the dependence of strain rate and temperature of the alloy required for the extrusion process was secured by utilizing databases for Cu and Fe and the KHL model. For microstructure analysis, FE-SEM with EDS was used to distinguish the phases present in Cu-10Fe alloy. The mechanical characteristics of Cu-10Fe alloy were secured using the results of fitting the mechanical properties of Copper and Steel from the Deform database to the KHL model. The deformation behavior within the alloy during hot extrusion was analyzed, providing insights into effective stress, effective strain, effective strain rate, and temperature. It was observed that the strain distribution was non-uniform. These research findings contribute to an improved understanding of the hot extrusion process of Cu-10Fe alloy and can aid in predicting the mechanical properties of the material.

In this study, the micro-FE analyses were carried out for the plastic behaviour of vertebral trabecular bones. Many researchers have investigated the elastic behaviour of trabecular bones by using the micro-finite element models based on the micro-CT images. However, there was no micro-FE model to account for the plastic behaviour of trabecular bones. Ulrich et at. reported that best results at coarser model were obtained when using 'compensated hexahedron models' with the same relative density. This study indicates that, for the elastic and plastic analysis, 'the compensated hexahedron FE model' is likely to be limited to about 63$\mu\textrm{m}$ image resolution in the vertebra trabecular bones.
Wind-induced responses of a structure are often evaluated through dynamic analysis, where measured wind forces obtained from a wind-tunnel test and dynamic properties obtained from a FE (Finite Element) model are utilized. However, the FE model generally shows considerable discrepancies in the estimation of natural frequencies compared to field measurements due to some assumptions and simplifications. In this paper, a calibration method that can improve the estimation of natural frequencies in the FE model is proposed, and specific cases are studied for its validity with comparison to the field measurement results.
Top synthetic spin valves wi th structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(Pl)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si (100) substrate with SiO$_2$ of 1500 were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system. We have changed only the thickness of the free layer and the thickness difference (Pl-P2) in the two ferromagnetic layers separated by Ru, and investigated the effect of magnetic film thickness on the GMR properties and the interlayer coupling field in a spin valve with a synthetic antiferromagnet. As thickness difference of pinned layer was decreased from +25 to -25 , MR ratio was decreased gradually. However, there was a dip zone indicating a big change of MR ratio around Pl = P2, which can be due to the large canting of pinned layers. The modified Neel model was suggested for the top synthetic spin valve to explain the interlayer coupling field according to the thickness change of ferromagnetic layers. The interlayer coupling field was decreased due to the magnetostatic coupling (orange peel coupling) as suggested by model. However, the interlayer coupling field was not explained at the dip zone by the modified Neel model. The deviation of modified Neel model at the dip zone could be due to the largely canting of the pinned layers as well, which depends on different thickness in synthetic antiferromagnetic structure.
