Two aspects of the design of a small-scale smart wing are addressed in this work, related to the ability of the wing to modify its cross section assuming the shape of two different airfoils and to the possibility of deflecting the profiles near the trailing edge in order to obtain hingeless control surfaces. The actuation is provided by one-way shape memory alloy wires eventually coupled to springs, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) being among the most promising materials for this kind of applications. The points to be actuated along the profiles and the displacements to be imposed are selecetd so that they satisfactorily approximate the change from an airfoil to the other and to result in an adequate deflection of the control surface; the actuators and their performances are designed so that an adequate wing stiffness is guaranteed, in order to prevent excessive deformations and undesired airfoil shape variations due to aerodynamic loads. The effect of the pressure distributions, calculated by way of the XFOIL software, and of the actuators loads, is estimated by FE analyses of the loaded wing. Two prototypes are then realised incorporating the variable airfoil and the hingeless aileron features respectively, and the verification of their shapes in both the actuated and non-actuated states, supported by image analysis techniques, confirms that interesting results are achievable with the proposed lay out and design considerations.

A finite element model for predicting the entire nonlinear behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete continuous beams is described. The model is based on the moment-curvature relations pre-generated through section analysis, and is formulated utilizing the Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the model is verified with experimental results of a series of continuous high-strength concrete beam specimens. Some important aspects of behavior of the beams having different tensile reinforcement ratios are evaluated. In addition, a parametric study is carried out on continuous high-strength concrete beams with practical dimensions to examine the effect of tensile reinforcement on the degree of moment redistribution. The analysis shows that the tensile reinforcement in continuous high-strength concrete beams affects significantly the member behavior, namely, the flexural cracking stiffness, flexural ductility, neutral axis depth and redistribution of moments. It is also found that the relation between the tensile reinforcement ratios at critical negative and positive moment regions has great influence on the moment redistribution, while the importance of this factor is neglected in various codes.
Utilyzing the solution prepared for the sulfur determination, the amounts of iron, copper and cobalt in the sulfide ore were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The samples were dissolved with the mixed solutions of ,$Br_2\;and\;HNO_3$ and a major constituent of $SiO_2$was repelled from the solution by HF treatment several times. The analytical results agreed with the data obtained by conventional methods within ${\pm}$1.5% for Fe of the range of 20 to 50%, ${\pm}$1.0% for Cu of 10 to 15%, and ${\pm}$0.4% for Co of 1 to 5%. The present method was tolerably found to be reproducible.

A Tsunami damper, which is installed on the outer wall of a nuclear power plant, is usually used as a ventilation window of the machine room, but can serve as a device for preventing flooding of the machine room when large waves flow over the outer wall. The sealing strip, which is inserted between the casing and the blades, plays an important role in maintaining a watertight environment. In this study, in order to ensure an effective watertight performance of the tsunami damper, FE analysis is conducted to compare the contact characteristics of sealing strips with three different section shapes. In the analysis, the casing and the blade of Tsunami damper are assumed to be rigid bodies; the sealing strip is assumed to be a flexible body. The stress, the strain, and the contact pressure are investigated to examine the sealing performance of each model.

The purpose of this study is development of a finite element algorithm to find out the stressed condition, slipped direction and slipped dimension when some elements of cable-membrane structures are slipped from it's initially designed coordinates by external loads as wind or non uniform load and so on. In order to search the slipped behaviors of cable-membrane structures, a Arbitrarily-Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) finite element formulation is introduced. In these procedures, a stiffness matrix related with ALE concept is formulated and a FE analysis program for cable-membrane structures with slipped elements is developed. Various examples for cable and membrane structures are presented to verify the program's validation. The results are shown good agreement with that of existed one.
In this study rotordynamic characteristics of an air turbo-compressor (ATC) used in oxygen plant are analyzed and its operating-speed balancing is performed to solve the vibration trouble caused by rotor unbalance. Three dimensional model of the ATC rotor is completed and then analytical FE (finite element) model, which is verified by experimental modal testing, is developed. A rotordynamic analysis includes the critical map, Campbell diagram, and unbalance response, especially considering the pedestal housings supporting tilting pad bearings. A test run of operating-speed, using tilting-pad bearing of actual use, showed that the vibration level increased very sharply as approaching the rated speed. The operating-speed balancing specified by API 684 was carried out by using influence coefficient method. The results showed that the vibrations at the bearing pedestal housings represented good levels of 0.1 mm/s. From the test run and operating-speed balancing, the analytical results, that is, critical speeds are in good agreement with the test results and unbalance responses introducing the correction masses are similar to the as-is test responses in its aspect.

In this study, we conducted the approximate multi-objective optimization of gap sizes of pressurized-water reactor (PWR) annular fuels. To determine the contacting tendency of the inner-outer gaps between the annular fuel pellets and cladding, thermoelastic-plastic-creep (TEPC)analysis of PWR annular fuels was performed, using in-house FE code. For the efficient heat transfer at certain levels of stress, we investigated the tensile, compressive hoop stress and temperature, and optimized the gap sizes using the non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). For this, response surface models of objective and constraint functions were generated, using central composite (CCD) and D-optimal design. The accuracy of approximate models was evaluated through $R^2$ value. The obtained optimal solutions by NSGA-II were verified through the TEPC analysis, and we compared the obtained optimum solutions and generated errors from the CCD and D-optimal design. We observed that optimum solutions differ, according to design of experiments (DOE) method.

In this study, focusing on reducing a load in forming helical gears, the extrusion using two-step processes for manufacturing helical gear is proposed. The process is composed of the extrusion step in which spur gear to be used as a preform in next step is formed, and the torsion step in which the preform of spur gear is formed to helical gear. Upper-bound theory for the two-step process is applied and compared with the results of experiment. The result of upper-bound solution has a good agreement with that of the experiment and the FE analysis. The newly proposed method can be used as an advanced forming technique to remarkably reduce a forming load, to prolong a tool life, and to replace the conventional forming process of helical gears. Results obtained from the extrusion using two-step processes enable the designer and manufacturer of helical gear to be more efficient in this field.
In the present paper, an extended composite beam theory that has no restriction on the lay-up and can account for Poisson effect which is significant for composite materials is proposed. Buckling equations for composite thin-walled members which are subjected to axial compression are derived based on the composite beam theory. In order to check the validity of the derived buckling equations, the results of experiments on the flexural-torsional buckling of vinylester/E-glass and polyester/E-glass pultruded T-section members and the flexural buckling of vinylester/E-glass pultruded H-section members are used as numerical examples. The comparison of the analytical results to the experimental and FE analysis results reveals that the proposed buckling equations predict the buckling loads of pultruded members conservatively by about 7%.
Under strong ground motion, pounding can be caused because of the different dynamic properties between two adjacent buildings. Using different structural systems in two adjacent structures makes a difference in the lateral stiffness and thus changes the pounding force between them. In this paper, the effect of the structural system of adjacent buildings on the amount of force applied by pounding effects has been investigated. Moment resisting frame systems (MRFs), lateral X-bracing system (LBS), shear wall system (SWS) and dual system (DS) have been investigated. Four different cases has been modelled using finite element (FE) method. The number of stories of the two adjacent buildings is different in each case: case 1 with 6 and 4 stories, case 2 with 9 and 6 stories, case 3 with 15 and 6 stories and case 4 with 10 and 10 stories. The structures have been modelled three-dimensionally. Non-linear time history analysis has been done on the structures using the finite element software SAP2000. In order to model pounding effects, the non-linear gap elements have been used.
