  • Image segmentation is one of the important processes in the image information extraction for computer vision systems. The fuzzy clustering methods have been extensively used in the image segmentation because it extracts feature information of the region. Most of fuzzy clustering methods have used the Fuzzy C-means(FCM) algorithm. This algorithm can be misclassified about the different size of cluster because the degree of membership depends on highly the distance between data and the centroids of the clusters. This paper proposes a fuzzy clustering algorithm using the Average Intracluster Distance that classifies data uniformly without regard to the size of data sets. The Average Intracluster Distance takes an average of the vector set belong to each cluster and increases in exact proportion to its size and density. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has the g

  • Clustering is one of the most important unsupervised learning methods that clusters data into homogeneous groups. However, cluster centers tend leaning to high density clusters because clustering is based on the distances between data points and cluster centers. In this paper, a modified clustering method forcing cluster centers to be apart by introducing a center-scattering term in the Fuzzy C-Means objective function is introduced. The proposed method converges more to real centers with small number of iterations compared to the original one. All the strengths can be verified with experimental results.

  • Methods of fuzzy C-means have been used to characterize geotechnical information from static cone penetration data. As contrary with traditional classification methods such as Robertson classification chart, the FCM expresses classes not conclusiveness but fuzzy. The results show that the FCM is useful to characterize ground information that can not be easily found by using normal classification chart. But optimal number of classes may not be easily defined. So, the optimal number of classes should be determined considering not only technical measures but engineering aspects.

  • In this thesis, to accurately measure 3D face information using the spatial encoding patterns, the new algorithm to segment the pattern images from initial face pattern image is proposed. If the obtained images is non-homogeneous texture and ambiguous boundary pattern, the pattern segmentation is very difficult. Furthermore. the non-encoded areas by accumulated error are occurred. In this thesis, the FCM(fuzzy c-means) clustering method is proposed to enhance the robust encoding and segmentation rate under non-homogeneous texture and ambiguous boundary pattern. The initial parameters for experiment such as clustering class number, maximum repetition number, and error tolerance are set with 2, 100, 0.0001 respectively. The proposed pattern segmentation method increased 8-20% segmentation rate with conventional binary segmentation methods.

  • This paper proposes an image segmentation framework that modifies the objective function of Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) to improve the performance and computational efficiency of the conventional FCM-based image segmentation. The proposed image segmentation framework includes a locally weighted fuzzy c-means (LWFCM) algorithm that takes into account the influence of neighboring pixels on the center pixel by assigning weights to the neighbors. Distance between a center pixel and a neighboring pixels are calculated within a window and these are basis for determining weights to indicate the importance of the memberships as well as to improve the clustering performance. We analyzed the segmentation performance of the proposed method by utilizing four eminent cluster validity functions such as partition coefficient ($V_{pc}$), partition entropy ($V_{pe}$), Xie-Bdni function ($V_{xb}$) and Fukuyama-Sugeno function ($V_{fs}$). Experimental results show that the proposed LWFCM outperforms other FCM algorithms (FCM, modified FCM, and spatial FCM, FCM with locally weighted information, fast generation FCM) in the cluster validity functions as well as both compactness and separation.

  • This paper describes an ECG signal labeling algorithm based on fuzzy clustering, which is very useful to the automated ECG diagnosis. The existing labeling methods compares the crosscorrelations of each wave form using IF-THEN binary logic, which tends to recognize the same wave forms such as different things when the wave forms have a little morphological variation. To prevent this error, we have proposed as ECG signal labeling algorithm using fuzzy clustering. The center and the membership function of a cluster is calculated by a cluster validity function. The dominant cluster type is determined by RR interval, and the representative beat of each cluster is determined by MF (Membership Function). The problem of IF-THEN binary logic is solved by FCM (Fuzzy C-Means). The MF and the result of FCM can be effectively used in the automated fuzzy inference -ECG diagnosis.

  • The performance of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks depends on setting up the Radial Basis Functions over the input space which are the important design procedure of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks. The existing method to initialize the location of the radial basis functions over the input space is to use the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering. However, the researchers which are interested in the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering cannot get as good modeling performance as they expect because the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering cannot project the information which is extracted over the output space into the input space. To compensate the above mentioned drawback of the conditional fuzzy C-means clustering, we apply a fuzzy K-nearest neighbors approach to project the auxiliary information defined over the output space into the input space without lose of the information.

  • In the area of clustering, there are numerous approaches to construct clusters in the input space. For regression problem, when forming clusters being a part of the overall model, the relationships between the input space and the output space are essential and have to be taken into consideration. Conditional Fuzzy C-Means (c-FCM) clustering offers an opportunity to analyze the structure in the input space with the mechanism of supervision implied by the distribution of data present in the output space. However, like other clustering methods, c-FCM focuses on the distribution of the data. In this paper, we introduce a new method, which by making use of the ambiguity index focuses on the boundaries of the clusters whose determination is essential to the quality of the ensuing classification procedures. The introduced design is illustrated with the aid of numeric examples that provide a detailed insight into the performance of the fuzzy classifiers and quantify several essentials design aspects.

  • In this paper, we compared recognition rates between NN(neural networks) and clustering method as a scheme of off-line PD(partial discharge) diagnosis which occurs at the stator coil of traction motor. To acquire PD data, three defective models are made. PD data for classification were acquired from PD detector. And then statistical distributions are calculated to classify model discharge sources. These statistical distributions were applied as input data of two classification tools, BP(Back propagation algorithm) and ANFIS(adaptive network based fuzzy inference system) pre-processed FCM(fuzzy c-means) clustering method. So, classification rate of BP were somewhat higher than ANFIS. But other items of ANFIS were better than BP; learning time, parameter number, simplicity of algorithm.
