An Analysis of Demand Variation for Paddy field Water by Applying Penmna-Monetith (Penman-Monteith 기법을 적용한 논벼 수요량 변화 분석)

  • 현재 국내 논벼 수요량 산정방법은 수정 Penman방식에 의한 증발산량을 계산하여 구하고 있다. 증발산량 산정은 여러 가지 방식에 의해 산정될 수 있으나, 유엔의 식량농업기구 (FAO, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)에서는 작물 수요량 산정에 수정 Penman 공식을 사용할 경우 증발산량이 과다산정 되는 점을 지적하여, 건조 및 습윤 기후에서 비교적 정확하고 일정한 경향을 나타내는 Penman-Monteith(P-M)공식을 사용하도록 추천하였다. 이에 따라 국내 기상청 및 농촌진흥청에서도 증발산량 산정에 P-M공식을 적용하기 시작했으며, 이와 더불어 농촌진흥청에서는 P-M 추정법에 따른 벼를 포함한 주요 작물의 생육단계별 작물계수(Kc)를 제안하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 논용수 공급지구 8곳을 선정하여 대상지구별로 기존의 수정 Penman 방식과 P-M 방식을 적용한 경우의 증발산량 차이와 이에 따른 논벼 수요량 변화를 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 수정 Penman 공식을 적용한 경우에 비해 P-M공식을 적용한 경우 증발산량이 모두 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 증발산량 산정방법 변화에 따른 대상지구별로 증발산량 결과값의 변화는 모두 비슷하게 나타났다. P-M방식을 적용했을 경우 잠재증발산량은 11.1%~14.9%(평균 12%)로 감소하였으며, 작물계수를 적용한 실제증발산량의 경우에도 3.8~5.1%(평균 4.6%) 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 이에 따른 논벼 수요량의 변화도 실제증발산량의 변화와 비슷한 감소 경향을 보였다. 다음으로 P-M방식을 채택한 경우의 논벼 수요량의 생육시기별 변화를 조사해 본 결과, 이앙기 수요량은 2.1%~6.3% (평균 4.4%)로 증가하다가, 본답기에는 수요량이 5.1%~11.3%(평균 8.4%)로 감소하였다. 전반적인 증발산량은 본답기 수요량 감소분이 이앙기 수요량 증가분보다 더 크기 때문에 감소경향을 나타낸 것으로 파악되었다. 또한 이앙기 수요량과 본답기 수요량의 증감의 경향이 다르게 나타난 것은 증발산량 산정방식의 변화에 따른 생육시기별 작물계수의 차이로 인한 변화로 파악되었다. 논벼 수요량은 농업용수 공급계획 수립의 주요기준이 되는 인자이므로, P-M방식 적용에 따른 논벼 수요량의 산정결과에 대해 보다 면밀한 검토가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

  • 최근 기후변화로 인해 수자원 위험요소인 가뭄 및 홍수피해가 증가하고 있으며, 인구증가에 따른 수량감소로 수자원관리가 더욱 어려워지고 있는 실정이다. 효율적인 수자원관리 및 기후변화 대응을 위해 세계 물시장은 점점 증가하고 있으며, 이에 따라 국내기업 또한 해외사업 진출을 추진하고 있으나, 사업에 필수적인 기상, 수문 등 기초자료의 부재로 어려움을 겪고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내기업의 해외사업 진출 시 필요한 기상, 지형, 수문, 인문 사회 등 기초자료를 제공하는 글로벌 수자원정보제공시스템(Global Water Bank, GWB)을 설계 및 개발하고자 한다. 국내 외 예비타당성보고서 및 국내에서 수집 가능한 국외 정보현황을 분석하여 자료 제공인자를 도출하였으며, 이를 토대로 시스템 내 제공항목을 기상, 지형, 수문해석, 인문 사회, 기후변화 자료로 구분하였다. 해외시장 진출범위를 고려하여 자료의 공간적인 범위를 전지구로 설정하였으며, 전지구 자료의 가용성을 검토하여 제공자료를 구축하였다. 기상자료는 NCDC (National Climate Data Center)의 관측 지점자료와 APHRODITE (Asian Precipitation - Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation) 격자자료를 수집하였으며, 오 결측 자료는 품질검토를 수행하여 보정하였다. 지형자료의 경우 USGS (U.S. Geological Survey)의 DEM, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)의 토양도, UMD (University of Maryland)의 토지피복도를 구축하였다. 수문자료는 GRDC(Global Runoff Data Centre)의 관측 지점자료를 수집하였으며, 미계측 지역의 수문자료 구축을 위해 VIC(Variable Infiltration Capacity) 수문모형을 활용하여 $0.5^{\circ}$ 공간해상도의 격자 유출량 자료를 생산하였다. 인문 사회자료로 World Bank의 국가별 통계자료를 수집하였으며, 구축된 각 자료는 GWB 시스템을 통해 제공된다. 시스템의 시범운영을 위해 아시아 지역을 대상으로 GWB- 버전을 개발하였으며, 시범지역 내 관측자료와 비교분석하여 자료의 활용성을 검증하였다. 추후 GWB 시스템은 해외진출 사업 우선지역 선정 근거로 활용될 수 있는 가상수 및 물산업지수 등의 추가정보를 제공하고 타 지역으로 확대적용 예정이다.

Excessive copper in feed not merely undermines animal health but affects food safety

  • Background: Blackened intestines in slaughtered pigs have been commonly observed in China in recent years. However, no cause has been reported. Objectives: We attempted to determine whether the blackening of the pig intestine was related to an excess of copper (Cu) in their feed. Methods: In this study, we observed and collected porcine intestines in small- and large-scale pig slaughterhouses in Shandong province from May to October 2018. Twelve types of metal ions were detected in the black intestinal samples. Results: The Cu level in the intestine samples was mostly higher than the Chinese national limit for food. Further study showed that Cu supplementation in most commercial porcine feed also exceeded the national standard. An animal model (mouse) that could mimic the intestinal blackening in pigs was established. Compared to control mice, Cu accumulated in the liver and intestines of mice fed an excessive Cu level, confirming the excessive Cu in the feed may be considered the major cause of blackened porcine intestines. Microscopic examination revealed that black intestines had many particles containing Cu in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa, and the intestinal mucosal epithelial cells showed degeneration and necrosis. Conclusions: In conclusion, overuse of Cu in animal feed can lead to animal poisoning and Cu accumulation in animal products. Such overuse not only harms the health of livestock but can also affect public health.

Dietary intake of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in Korean toddlers 12-24 months of age with comparison to the dietary recommendations

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Adequate dietary fatty acid intake is important for toddlers between 12-24 months of age, as this is a period of dietary transition in conjunction with rapid growth and development; however, actual fatty acid intake during this period seldom has been explored. This study was conducted to assess the intake status of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids by toddlers during the 12-24-month period using 2010-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Twenty-four-hour dietary recall data of 12-24-month-old toddlers (n = 544) was used to estimate the intakes of ${\alpha}$-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), linoleic acid (LA; 18:2n-6), and arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n-6), as well as the major dietary sources of each. The results were compared with the expected intake for exclusively breastfed infants in the first 6 months of life and available dietary recommendations. RESULTS: Mean daily intakes of ALA, EPA, DHA, LA, and AA were 529.9, 22.4, 37.0, 3907.6, and 20.0 mg/day, respectively. Dietary intakes of these fatty acids fell below the expected intake for 0-5-month-old exclusively breastfed infants. In particular, DHA and AA intakes were 4 to 5 times lower. The dietary assessment indicated that the mean intake of essential fatty acids ALA and LA was below the European and the FAO/WHO dietary recommendations, particularly for DHA, which was approximately 30% and 14-16% lower, respectively. The key sources of the essential fatty acids, DHA, and AA were soy (28.2%), fish (97.3%), and animals (53.7%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the prevailing view of DHA and AA requirements on early brain development, there remains considerable room for improvement in their intakes in the diets of Korean toddlers. Further studies are warranted to explore how increasing dietary intakes of DHA and AA could benefit brain development during infancy and early childhood.

  • Ever since the definition "live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host"and guidelines of probiotics by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the WHO were announced, the research and product development using probiotics has been hugely successful. As a result, probiotics products become an important part of the functional food market. Recently, thanks to rapidly growing microbiome research, more diverse roles and health benefits of probiotics are being elucidated. Based on those results, pharmabiotics using probiotics are anticipated. In addition, in order to be internationally competitive and distributed, efforts should be made for certification such as GRAS/NDI notification through quality control that meets global standards. In this paper, we reviewed several aspects of probiotics concerning recently amended definition of probiotics, the regulation of probiotics, the strain specificity of efficacy, the association with microbiome research, and the market trends.

Satellite-based Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) as an Indicator of Agricultural Drought in North Korea (Evaporative Stress Index (ESI)를 활용한 북한의 위성영상기반 농업가뭄 평가)

  • North Korea has frequently suffered from extreme agricultural crop droughts, which have led to food shortages, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The increasing frequency of extreme droughts, due to global warming and climate change, has increased the importance of enhancing the national capacity for drought management. Historically, a meteorological drought index based on data collected from weather stations has been widely used. But it has limitations in terms of the distribution of weather stations and the spatial pattern of drought impacts. Satellite-based data can be obtained with the same accuracy and at regular intervals, and is useful for long-term change analysis and environmental monitoring and wide area access in time and space. The Evaporative Stress Index (ESI), a satellite-based drought index using the ratio of potential and actual evaporation, is being used to detect drought response as a index of the droughts occurring rapidly over short periods of time. It is more accurate and provides faster analysis of drought conditions compared to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). In this study, we analyze drought events during 2015-2017 in North Korea using the ESI satellite-based drought index to determine drought response by comparing with it with the SPI and SPEI drought indices.

  • 가뭄은 전 세계적으로 농업을 비롯한 사회, 경제적으로 큰 피해를 주는 자연 재해이며, 향후 피해 저감을 위해 가뭄의 경향을 파악하고 지역별 가뭄 특성을 파악할 필요가 있다. 위성영상을 활용한 가뭄 판단은 광역적 범위를 대상으로 다양한 밴드를 활용한 데이터를 주기적이고 일정한 수준으로 취득 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 농업 가뭄 분야의 위성영상 활용은 미계측 지역에 대한 정확한 데이터 취득이 어려운 지점데이터의 단점을 보완할 수 있다. 위성영상을 활용한 가뭄 지수로는 Leaf Area Index (LAI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) 등 다양한 지수들이 있으며, 본 연구에서는 단기 가뭄 판단에 활용되고 있는 Evaporative Stress Index (ESI)를 활용하였다. 국내 행정구역 기반의 가뭄 판단을 위해 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectramadiometer (MODIS)위성의 MOD16A2 영상을 사용하였다. MOD16A2는 land surface temperature (LST)과 LAI의 계산을 통한 실제 증발산량과 FAO-56 Penman-Monteith 공식을 사용한 잠재증발산량을 포함한 다양한 데이터를 8일 주기의 500m 해상도로 제공하고 있다. 2001년부터 2018년까지 500m 해상도의 ESI를 산정하였으며, 국내의 과거 가뭄 경향 분석과 지역별 특성 파악을 위한 표준화를 수행하였다. 그 결과 과거 극심한 가뭄이 있었던 해 (2000-2001년, 2015-2017년 등)에 대한 농업 가뭄 경향 분석이 가능하였으며, 지역별 특성을 파악한 결과 상습가뭄 지역에서 가뭄 경향을 확인하였다. 농업 가뭄 분야에서 ESI의 활용은 가뭄 조기 경보 시스템 개발 및 위성영상 기반 가뭄 모니터링 기술 개발 등에 활용 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

Distribution of Fishing Grounds of Korean Bottom Longline and Annual Change of CPUE of the Patagonian Toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides in South West Atlantic (남서대서양 한국 원양 저연승 어선의 조업 분포 및 비막치어(Dissostichus eleginoides) CPUE 변화)

  • This study used the commercial fishing data of Korean high sea bottom longline vessels in the South West Atlantic Ocean from 2013 to 2019 to identify the distribution of fishing grounds of Korean longline vessels. We estimated the CPUE of the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides and the changes in its stock status. The fishing grounds of Korean longline vessels were observed to concentrate on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) boundary between Argentina, Uruguay, and Falkland owing to the high seas of 41-55 °S in the south and 49-60 °W in the west. A high intensity of fishing was seen in the middle area, which was horizontal from the 3.1 subarea. In all the three subareas, CPUEs have had the tendency to decline since 2013. Although the CPUEs in the 3.2.1-2 subareas were the highest in each subarea, there was no significant difference in each subarea (P>0.05). It is believed that the establishment of a regional fisheries organization or the strengthening of the management of FAO is necessary for the management of Southwest Atlantic fisheries and sustainable fishing, because the portion and scope of Korean longline vessels are very low in the Southwest Atlantic; however, the CPUE is estimated to have declined.

A Study of Germination Characteristics of Native Plants to be Utilized in DMZ Barren Land (불모지 내 활용 가능한 자생식물의 발아특성 연구)

  • This study suggested suitable soil textures that is proper to propagate native plants to manage and restore barren land in DMZ. Germination tests were conducted for 16 native herbaceous plants growing in the DMZ border area in accordance with FAO-BI (Biodiversity International) standards, and the germination rate and T50 in vitro were investigated. In order to examine the germination characteristics according to the soil textures, we used gravel, bed and mixed soil and investigated the germination characteristics under ordinary room temperature conditions in the greenhouse. As a result, it was observed that the germination rate in the greenhouse was significantly decreased compared to the germination rate in vitro of the species advertised due to soil textures. T50 between the in vitro and each soil texture showed significant differences whereas T50 between soil textures alone did not in all species advertised. The germination rate in vitro of Aster koraiensis, Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum, Hosta clausa, and Hosta minor there was no significant difference compared to ordinary room temperature conditions. In addition, as the germination rate is demonstrated more than 70%, which is relatively higher than other species advertised, it is considered to have strong environmentally adaptable. On the other hand, considering that the 6 species of Leontopodium coreanum, Plantago major, Potentilla chinensis, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum latiovalifolium, and Veronica kiusiana demonstrated less than 50% of germination rate in vitro, it is expected to be difficult to propagate without pre-treatment. In order to use these 6 species as restoration material plants, it needs to be considered to pre-treat to improve germination rate, or to enhance the vitality of seeds by improving the seed gathering period and storage method.

Estimation on an Amount of the Groundwater Demand and Supply for Applying the Well-network System (WNS) to a Frequent-drought Area (관정연계이용 기술 적용을 위한 상습가뭄지역 지하수 수요-공급량 평가)

  • This study was conducted to estimate groundwater demand and supply for agricultural activities in a frequent-drought area that requires implementation of optimal distribution plan utilizing the well-network system (WNS). The WNS has been considered as a viable strategic way of supplying groundwater to farmlands by connecting groundwater wells physically or virtually. The study area heavily relied on groundwater resources for irrigation up to 53% due to a lack of surface water resources. Two kinds of methods, HOMWRS software and FAO approach, were used for estimating irrigation water requirements for paddy and upland fields, respectively. During the latest 10 years (2010~2019), the water requirements was estimated to be 1,106 m3/day. The requirements notably increased to 1,121~4,004 m3/day during active farming season (May to September), which exceeded the total yield capacity of pre-existing groundwater wells (2,356 m3/day) in the area. Detailed and definite determination for groundwater demand and supply helped to determine optimal scale parameters of WNS. The WNS has achieved more balanced distribution of groundwater resources for irrigation over the study area.
