  • The eighteen (18) F1 hybrid combinations were tested to identify potential combinations adaptable to type 1 climatic conditions in the Philippines. The six (6) bivoltine purelines (DMMMSU 108, DMMMSU 109, DMMMSU 110, DMMMSU 111, DMMMSU 113, and DMMMSU 119); and three (3) multivoltine purelines (DMMMSU 1000, DMMMSU 1007, and DMMMSU 1014), were crossed (multivoltine x bivoltine) in a mating plan. These were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), replicated three times, and analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). A test of significance was done using ANOVA across years and Tukey's Honest Significant Difference Test (HSD). The multiple trait evaluation index (EI) method was also used in the identification of potential F1 hybrids. Three major phases were done: (1) parental rearing of multivoltine and bivoltine pure lines for breed multiplication; (2) hybridization process; and (3) evaluation of F1 hybrids. Rearing evaluations were conducted for three consecutive years. Based from the three evaluations, 10 potential crosses were identified: DMMMSU MV-12, DMMMSU MV-11, DMMMSU MV-13, DMMMSU MV-16, DMMMSU MV-07, DMMMSU MV-14, DMMMSU MV-05, DMMMSU MV-09, DMMMSU MV-03, and DMMSU MV-10. The topmost combinations with the best economic and commercial characters and are consistently adaptable during two (2) cropping seasons were DMMMSU MV-07, DMMMSU MV-12, DMMMSU MV-05, DMMMSU MV-09 and DMMMSU MV-11. These newly-identified F1 hybrids are considered potential breeds that could improve cocoon production.

  • A $F_1$ hybrid out of 143 crosses of rape (Brassica napus) using cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility yielded 5.18 tons per hectare. European and native varieties used, were found out to have 78% and 58% of genes restoring fertility, respectively. The $F_1$ hybrids of three way cross using non-isogenic maintainer showed higher heteroses than those of double cross. To produce F 1 hybrids of three way cross, three stages of crossing operations are needed and seeds produced from about 60 hectares can be covered to 60, 000 hectares.

  • Intergeneric hybrids formed between Aspergillus oryzae var oryzae and Penicillium verruculosum F-3 were obtained by nuclear transfer technique. Several auxotrophic mutants isolated fromconidio-spores of the two strains mutagenized with ultraviolet and N-methyl-N-nitrosoguanidine. Optimal conditions for formation of intergeneric hybrids were investigated. Frequencies of hybrid formation by nuclear transfer were 3$\times $10$^{-5}$ $~$1$\times $10$^{-5}$. From observation of genetic stability, conidial size, DNA content, nuclear stain, it was suggested that their karyptypes are aneuploid. The hybrid posses the 1.3$~$2.2 fold higher amylase activities than those of parental strains. It was also revealed that some hybids had different isozyme patterns compared to those of parental strains by amylase activity assays.

  • Three F$_1$ hybrids, Seokwang/Milyang 54, HR1619-6-2-1-2-2/Milyang 54 and 55061/IR19735-5-2-3-2-1, and their parents were inoculated with each of four individual blast races, IC-l3, IH-l, IA-61 and IB-47, and the mixtures of two races, IC-13 and IH-l, IC-13 and IA-61, and IC-13 and IB-47, respectively. The varietal reactions to the tested races showed that two parental varieties of each cross, Seokwang and Milyang 54, HR1619-6-2-1-2-2 and Milyang 54, and 55061 and IR19735-5-2-3-2-1 have different resistance gene(s) respectively. The F 1 hybrids between two cultivars having different resistant genes were resistant to the mixture of two races of which one race was virulent to one parent and avirulent to the other parent respectively, while the parents of these F$_1$s were susceptible. This may suggest that the F$_1$ hybrids have wider spectrum resistance to leaf blast than their parents.

  • A large number of individual ginseng plants have been selected in the farmer's fields to develop new ginseng varieties with desirable traits since 1970s. Among them, Hwangsukjong with green stem and yellow berry was selected as a ginseng germplasm. The phenotype of Hwangsukjong is quite different from Jakyungjong that has violet stem and red berry and has been cultivated in most of ginseng fields. Therefore, Hwangsukjong was crossed with Jakyungjong to clarify the inheritance of stem color and then the characteristics of $F_1\;and\;F_2$ hybrids were investigated. $F_1$ hybrid plants were similar to Jakyungjong in most of aerial part characters and showed hybrid vigor in fresh weight of root and weight of 100 seeds. In $F_2$ generation, the stem color was segregated in a ratio of 3 violet to 1 green. From this result, it was elucidated that violet color was controlled by single dominant gene. In another experiment, DNA was extracted from parents (Jakyungjong and Hwangsukjong) and $F_1$ hybrid. For each primer evaluated, multiple band profile was produced comprising from one to five major bands plus a varying number of minor bands and amplified bands were detected among most primers. In case of UBC primer number 13, 17, 30, 31, and 43, band patterns of parents and $F_1$ hybrid were very similar, but the others were not. Especially, in {\sharp}1$, {\sharp}4$, and {\sharp}33$, specific band was produced in Hwangsukjong and $F_1$ hybrid while in {\sharp}6$, another specific band was produced in Jakyungjong and $F_1$ hybrid. Therefore, $F_1$ hybrid had all specific bands at these primers. So, these selective markers could be used for identification of characteristics of $F_2$ hybrids

  • This study was conducted to clarify high yielding factors of F$_1$ hybrids in terms of the growth characteristics, canopy structure, nitrogen content and nitrogen profile in the canopy. Varieties used in this study were four hybrid rices showing different heterosis in grain yield and their parents. Varieties of Japonica were Reimei (maintainer), TP 681 and TP 1278(restorers), and F$_1$ (Reimei ms ${\times}$ TP 681, Reimei ms ${\times}$ TP 1278) hybrid rices. Those of Indica type were 1378 (maintainer), Milyang 46 and Suweon 287(restorers), and F$_1$ (1378 ms ${\times}$ Milyang 46, 1378 ms ${\times}$ Suweon 287) hybrid rices. High heterosis in F$_1$ hybrid rices were shown in panicles per hill and spikelets per panicle, being greatest in spikelets per panicle. Spikelets per square meter expressed even greater heterosis than those two yield components because of multiplicative effect of them. Heterosisof ripened concentration of leaf nitrogen and steeper gradient of leaf nitrogen in canopy strata but also better productive structure in favor of light interception seemed to have led to higher canopy photosynthesis of F$_1$ hybrids and subsequent higher partition of assimilates for leaf area expantion especially during vegetative growth stage. Higher dry matter production, resulting from these factors, during vegetative stage would have contributed to the production of greater number of spikelets per square meter, and consequently to higher grain yield in F$_1$ hybrids.

  • This study is to develop new wheat breeding material through wide hybridization with wild species harboring useful characteristics such as salt, heat, and drought tolerance. Leymus mollis, wild rye was used to improve wheat genetic quality. L. mollis, is a perennial plant harboring tolerance against salt, heat, and drought because L. mollis distributes on the seaside. The F1 hybrids were produced by crossing between common wheat (Triticum aestivum L., Chinese Spring) and L. mollis. Genomic in situ hybridization revealed that the F1 hybrids have L. mollis genome. For the evaluation of salt and drought tolerance, seeds from the F2 were used. Under 2% NaCl solution, the F3 wheat-Leymus addition plants with salt tolerance showed more tillering and longer roots than other F3 plants without salt tolerance. Also, the F3 plants with salt tolerance showed better shallow-rooted than other F3 plants without salt tolerance. Finally, the F3 plants with salt tolerance made seed-setting under 2% NaCl condition, but other F3 plants without salt tolerance were not. Under drought conditions, the F3 plants with drought tolerance showed longer culm and spike length than other F3 plants without drought tolerance and even those of Chinese Spring under well-water conditions. We evaluated and selected the F3 plants with salt or drought tolerance for generation advancement.
