  • In a market situation full of brands and products, packaging requires a differentiated design that reflects the needs and trends of the times, as well as the characteristics of the product. Therefore, in this study, through literature reviews, market research methods, questionnaire surveys, eye-tracking experiments, etc., we derived related research and current status of ramen package design, and visual expression elements that induce consumers' subjective perception and interest. As a result, the ramen package design was generally simplified and tended to visualize the spicy taste. Second, consumers buy bag ramen once a week on average at a large discount mart, consider the color of the ramen package design as important, and recognize that the aesthetics of the package design can improve quality. Finally, the spicy phrases and ramen illustrations were the first visual elements of the ramen package design, and for the longest time, attention was focused on the brand name.

  • This paper describes preliminary results we have obtained in developing a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real time gaze tracking for interactive graphic display. Unlike most of the existing gaze tracking techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process for each person, our gaze tracker can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using the Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN). With GRNN, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. Furthermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by preliminary experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.

  • This paper is concerned with the development and evaluation of the camera calibration method for a real-time head tracking system. Tracking of head movements is important in the design of an eye-controlled human/computer interface and the area of virtual environment. We proposed a video-based head tracking system. A camera was mounted on the subject's head and it took the front view containing eight 3-dimensional reference points(passive retr0-reflecting markers) fixed at the known position(computer monitor). The reference points were captured by image processing board. These points were used to calculate the position (3-dimensional) and orientation of the camera. A suitable camera calibration method for providing accurate extrinsic camera parameters was proposed. The method has three steps. In the first step, the image center was calibrated using the method of varying focal length. In the second step, the focal length and the scale factor were calibrated from the Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) matrix obtained from the known position and orientation of the camera. In the third step, the position and orientation of the camera was calculated from the DLT matrix, using the calibrated intrinsic camera parameters. Experimental results showed that the average error of camera positions (3- dimensional) is about $0.53^{\circ}C$, the angular errors of camera orientations are less than $0.55^{\circ}C$and the data aquisition rate is about 10Hz. The results of this study can be applied to the tracking of head movements related to the eye-controlled human/computer interface and the virtual environment.

  • The size of a display is large, The form becoming various of that do not apply to previous methods of gaze tracking and if setup gaze-track-camera above display, can solve the problem of size or height of display. However, This method can not use of infrared illumination information of reflected cornea using previous methods. In this paper, Robust pupil detecting method for eye's occlusion, corner point of inner eye and center of pupil, and using the face pose information proposes a method for calculating the simply position of the gaze. In the proposed method, capture the frame for gaze tracking that according to position of person transform camera mode of wide or narrow angle. If detect the face exist in field of view(FOV) in wide mode of camera, transform narrow mode of camera calculating position of face. The frame captured in narrow mode of camera include gaze direction information of person in long distance. The method for calculating the gaze direction consist of face pose estimation and gaze direction calculating step. Face pose estimation is estimated by mapping between feature point of detected face and 3D model. To calculate gaze direction the first, perform ellipse detect using splitting from iris edge information of pupil and if occlusion of pupil, estimate position of pupil with deformable template. Then using center of pupil and corner point of inner eye, face pose information calculate gaze position at display. In the experiment, proposed gaze tracking algorithm in this paper solve the constraints that form of a display, to calculate effectively gaze direction of person in the long distance using single camera, demonstrate in experiments by distance.

  • This study has estimated the traits of conscious eye moving with the objects of the halls of subway stations. For that estimation, the observation data from eye-tracking were matched with the experiment images, while an independent program was produced and utilized for the analysis of the eye moving in the selected sections, which could provide the ground for clarifying the traits of space-users' eye moving. The outcomes can be defines as the followings. First, The application of the independently produced program provides the method for coding the great amount of observation data, which cut down a lot of analysis time for finding out the traits of conscious eye moving. Accordingly, the inclusion of eye's intentionality in the method for extracting the characteristics of eye moving enabled the features of entrance and exit of particular objects with the course of observing time to be organized. Second, The examination of eye moving at each area surrounding the object factors showed that [out]${\rightarrow}$[in], which the line of sight is from the surround area to the objects, characteristically moved from the left-top (Area I) of the selected object to the object while [in]${\rightarrow}$[out], which is from the inside of the object to the outside, also moved to the left-top (Area I). Overall, there were much eye moving from the tops of right and left (Area I, II) to the object, but the eye moving to the outside was found to move to the left-top (Area I), the right-middle (Area IV) and the right-top (Area II). Third, In order to find if there was any intense eye-moving toward a particular factor, the dominant standards were presented for analysis, which showed that there was much eye-moving from the tops (Area I, II) to the sections of 1 and 2. While the eye-moving of [in] was [I $I{\rightarrow}A$](23.0%), [$I{\rightarrow}B$](16.1%) and [$II{\rightarrow}B$](13.8%), that of [out] was [$A{\rightarrow}I$](14.8%), [$B{\rightarrow}I$](13.6%), [$A{\rightarrow}II$](11.4%), [$B{\rightarrow}IV$](11.4%) and [$B{\rightarrow}II$](10.2%). Though the eye-moving toward objects took place in specific directions (areas), that (out) from the objects to the outside was found to be dispersed widely to different areas.

  • There's a trend towards vitalization of nightscape planning businesses nationally and locally as well for city image making and activation of regional economy, but there is still no systematic nightscape planning going on for lack of relevant researches and objective evaluations. This study aims to suggest the guideline for nightscape planning by conducting an eye tracking experiment and survey for recognizing the characteristics of a nightscape. Furthermore, the authors intended to verify the eye-tracking method as a tool for landscape evaluation. The research site was restricted in the campus of Virginia Tech, VA, and those were selected by experts' survey among various types of nightscape images. The variables for analyzing the characteristics of nightscape images selected were 'preference', 'safety(fear)' and 'clearness'. 'Fixation duration', 'saccade duration', 'scan path length', and 'pupil size' were selected as the eye movement measurements. The results of this study are as follows: The first outcome found was that there were significant differences among the characteristics(preference, safety and clearness) of a nightscape by MANOVA, and these variables were correlated positively by Pearson's correlation. Secondly, there were differences on fixation duration, saccade duration and scan path depending on the nightscape setting statistically. Also, the eye tracking measurement in an open setting was recorded lower than enclosed settings. In the result of a heat map, we found the meaning of the fixated areas on both viewing without intention and viewing intentionally. It turned out that the fixated areas were consistent with the areas the subjects felt preferred and clarity in all of the nightscape images, which means people usually focus on what they prefer and see clearly in a certain nightscape. Based on this result and previous studies, the authors could make a conclusion that eye tracking method can apply to evaluate nightscape settings in terms of analyzing the whole characteristics and finding specific points for the detailed analysis as well. Therefore, these results can contribute by suggesting nightscape planning, implication of the landscape evaluation, and implication of the eye tracking study.

  • Because of the cognitive overload which is caused by the complicated information structure, Digital Convergence product interferes with the effective retrieval of the information from the menu. Two methods have been used to alleviate that cognitive overload by making an effective menu structure; physical menu structure method which is related with the width and depth of the menu, semantic menu structure method which is related with the menu title. In this research, we tried to demonstrate the effectiveness of the menu structure designing method by suggesting a new semantic methodology which uses the Fixation and Fixation duration which are accompanied by the visual search. Because the Fixation is automatically processed by the human cognitive model, we could easily recognize whether the information structure is correspond to the cognitive model or not. From this fact we established the hypothesis that the number of cognitively well established menu structures are fewer than that of the wrongly designed menu structures in terms of the Fixation number and Duration. To verify this hypothesis, we compared the Fixation number and Duration of the modified menu structures with those of the original menu structures by using the Eye-Tracking experiment. As a result, we could find the significant decrease of the Fixation number and Duration after modification. Therefore we could recognize that the modified menu structure was more effective than the original menu structure. In sum, the newly suggested menu structure designing methodology which uses the Fixation and Fixation Duration accompanied by the visual search was proved to be a very effective method.

  • Nowadays, the studies on interface and cognition-engineering has become issues of general interest as newly design-methods which analyze the behavior of user on products. However existing studies were mainly done with verbal-centered method which made it difficult for the designer to apply for visual realization. Moreover many mistakes and noises are taken place whenever the designer converts verbal statements and needs of user into visual factors. Therefore the designer needs to analyze visual perception on user and product as visual-centered methods. This study applies the eye tracking method as analysing-instrument and aims to develop the analysis-framework, the concrete techniques of measurement and the application for the product design. At first the nature and the process of visual perception on products are reviewed for developing analysis method. Then the technique of eye tracking and the meaning of fixation and movement are discussed to specify the concrete method. The basic experiment of product can reveal general analysis process, advantage and guideline for the application of eye tracking method. The Study is peformed through the following 4 steps ; to pre-research into product design and visual perception theory ; to identify the concrete experiment method, to measure the fixation/movement data and analyze the raw data, to convert the result of analysis to the visual framework. Finally the major findings and the limits of the study are suggested and summarized.

  • Teacher's gaze empathy for students in science class is considered to be effective in enhancing the learning effect. Thus, studies on gaze empathy have been conducted, but most of the studies are just to reveal the characteristics of gaze. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with a research to raise the level of science teacher's gaze empathy. The purpose of this study is to develop an instruction consulting strategy based on eye tracking for improving science teachers' gaze empathy. In this study, we selected and analyzed relevant literature on teacher's gaze empathy. We also designed a consulting strategy and then revised the design through expert reviews on validity and reliability. The developed consulting strategy was aimed to improve science teacher's gaze empathy and set quantitative goal based on eye tracking. The consulting strategy consisted of six steps: preparation for consulting, measurement and analysis of teacher's gaze empathy, instruction and feedback of gaze empathy, training for improving gaze empathy, evaluation of consulting result, and completion of the consulting. In addition, the consultation was completed or repeated again through the measurement and evaluation of gaze empathy using eye tracking. The developed consulting strategy has a value in that it provides an alternative with quantitative diagnosis and prescription for improving gaze empathy. The strategy can contribute to enhance teacher professional competency through the analysis of teaching behavior.
