Objectives : This study was conducted to find out the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicine eye drops on conjunctivitis. Methods : We searched randomized controlled trials on conjunctivitis through 10 DBs from the start to April 27, 2022. Study collection and data extraction, and evaluation of risk of bias were conducted by two independent researchers. The evaluation of the risk of bias in included RCTs was carried out by using Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. And the data synthesis was conducted by using Review Manager(RevMan, ver.5.4). Results : Total of 106 studies are researched and 7 studies of them are finally included. 1. The herbal medicine eye drops are more effective on than the western medicine eye drops, but the heterogeneity was very high. So we conducted sensitivity analysis and compared to the herbal medicine eye drops and the western medicine eye drops, the total effective rate was higher in the herbal medicine eye drops and the heterogeneity was somewhat reduced. 2. In the subgroup analysis, Fufang Xiongdan eye drops and Houttuynia cordata Thunb eye drops are more effective than the western medicine. It may represent substantial heterogeneity. 3. In the subgroup analysis, the herbal medicine eye drops are more effective than antibiotic and antiviral eye drops on acute bacterial conjunctivitis, but showed high heterogeneity. On the other hand, the herbal medicine eye drops are more effective than antibiotic and antiviral eyed drops on acute viral conjuctivitis and showed low heterogeneity. 4. In the subgroup analysis, we compared the effectiveness of herbal and western medicine eye drops according to total effectiveness rate evaluation methods. When comparing the studies calculating the total effective rate by the sum of 'Cured', 'Significantly Impaired', and 'Improved', the effective rate of the herbal medicine eye drops was higher than that of the western medicine eye drops, and the heterogeneity was very low. 5. In most studies, side effects of herbal medicine eye drops were absent or mild. Conclusions : This study shows that herbal medicine eye drops may be more effective than western medicine eye drops and have safety. But further researches are needed to resolve the heterogeneity of this study.
Many commonly used household chemicals and medical eye drops look alike, resulting in a worldwide increase in incidences of accidents caused by confusion between similar-looking agents. In this case report, we present two patients who visited the emergency department following inadvertent instillation of tinea pedis treatment solution instead of eye drops. Both patients developed corneal chemical burns following the accidental application. Notably, the visual acuity and symptoms eventually recovered for both patients after hospitalization. However, complete recovery occurred only after several weeks. Both patients were relatively old and had been prescribed eye drops after previous ophthalmic surgery. Since the eye is a sensory organ that receives visual information, ocular injuries significantly affect the quality of life and social functioning of the patient. Incidences of accidental misidentification of eye drops are steadily increasing in South Korea; unfortunately, regulatory policies are unavailable to avoid such hazards. Therefore, physicians should be mindful of the potential risks associated with misidentification of everyday household products and must spend time educating patients when prescribing eye drops. Policy regulations are warranted for products with containers that resemble eye drop bottles. Such items need to be clearly labeled with additional warnings to prevent misidentification and accidental ocular instillation.
Objective : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of herbal eye drops, Sean-tang and Coptidis rhizoma on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis. Methods : After administering herbal eye drops (Sean-tang, Coptidis rhizoma) on Staphylococcus ausreus, Staphylococcus. epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, I measured MIC and the size of inhibition zone. MIC was measured by dropping to $50{\mu}{\ell}$ according to density(l00%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%). Anti-bacterial potency was measured by the size of inhibition zone with change of volume. Result : On Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Coptidis rhizoma showed the highest anti-bacterial potency and on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Sean-tang, Coptidis rhizoma was nor anti-bacterial potency. Conclusions : The present author think that the herbal eye drops, Sean-tang and Coptidis rhizoma can be used to cure Staphylococcus aureus, Staphyloccus epidermidis keratitis and if further study is performed, the use of the herbal eye drops will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.
Objectives : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of herbal eye drops(Sean-tang, Jinpi-san, Tangpo-san, Copitdis Rhizoma) on Staphylococcus aureus keratitis. Methods : After administering various herbal eye drops on Staphylococcus aureus, I measured MIC and the size of inhibition zone. MIC was measured by dropping from 20 to $50{\mu}{\ell}$ according to density. Anti-bacterial potency was measured by the size of inhibition zone with change of volume under 2 days culture condition. Also continuous antibacterial potency of herbal eye drops was measured by the size of inhibition zone according to 2 days and 6 days culture each under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$condition. Results : 1. MIC on Staphylococcus aureus in Sean-tang, Jinpi-san and Tangpo-san was 100%, $20{\mu}{\ell}$. 2. MIC on Staphylococcus aureus in Coptidis rhizoma was 10%, $30{\mu}{\ell}$. 3. MIC on Staphylococcus aureus in Cravit was 0.1%, $50{\mu}{\ell}$. 4. Under the 2 days culture condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureus by volume for Sean-tang was 12.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Jinpi-san was 19.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Tangpo-san was 15.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Coptidis rhizoma was 32.7 mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$ and Cravit was 31mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Coptidis rhizoma showed the highest anti-bacterial potency. 5. Under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$ condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureus by 2 and 6 culture days for Sean-tang was 12.0mm, Jinpi-san was 19.0mm, Tangpo-san was 15.0mm, Coptidis rhizoma was 32.7mm and Cravit was 31.0 mm, which showed sameness anti-bacterial potency in 2 days and 6 days. Conclusions : The present author think that the herbal eye drops can be used to cure Staphylococcus aureus keratitis and if further study is performed, the use of the herbal eye drops will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.
Objective: This experimental study was designed to investigate the safety and the effectiveness of Samjeong pharmacopuncture solution (SPS) manufactured by using a the lowtemperature extract on process. Methods: To identify the safety and the effectiveness of using SPS as eye drops, we performed applied eye irritation tests on rabbits and antibacterial tests for Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, and Candida albicans. The eye irritation test was performed according to the toxicity testing regulation of the Korea Food & Drug Administration (2009. 8. 24, KFDA 2009-116). After SPS had been applied on the left eye of the rabbits, eye irritation in the cornea, iris and conjunctiva was observed on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 7th day. After SPS had been dropped on bacterial species that cause keratitis, the minimum inhibition concentration and the size of the inhibition zone were measured. The anti-bacterial potency was also measured by taking the size of inhibition zone. Results: After SPS had been administered on the left eye of the rabbits, none of nine rabbits were found to show abnormal signs or weight changes. After SPS had been administered on the left eye of the rabbits, no eye irritation in the cornea, iris and conjunctiva was observed on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 7th day. No specific response was detected in MIC for bacterial species Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, and Candida albicans after SPS had been applied. Conclusions: This study suggests that SPS is a non-toxic and non-irritant medicine that does not cause any of eye irritation in rabbits, but it has no antibacterial effects on bacterial species that are well known to cause keratitis. These results suggest that more research is required on extracts from herbal medicines for treating keratitis.

Background: Many patients with glaucoma have difficulty using antiglaucoma eye drops because of dry eye symptom. In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we evaluated the effect of Korean Red Ginseng on dry eye syndrome in patients with glaucoma treated with antiglaucoma eye drops. Methods: Forty-nine participants were allocated to the Korean Red Ginseng (3 g/day; n = 24) or placebo (n = 25) groups for 8 weeks. Tear film stability, fluorescein corneal staining, conjunctival hyperemia, tear production, grade of meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye questionnaire (Ocular Surface Disease Index) were evaluated at baseline and on completion of the treatment. Results: Almost all patients displayed dry eye symptoms and signs at baseline. After the 8-week intervention, Korean Red Ginseng supplementation significantly improved the tear film stability and total Ocular Surface Disease Index score, as compared to placebo (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Korean Red Ginseng supplementation may provide an additional treatment option for dry eye and patients with glaucoma using antiglaucoma eye drops.
This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of herbal eye drops, Tangpo-san and Coptidis rhizoma on Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa keratitis. The following results were obtained by using Minimum inhibition Concentration(MIC) and inhibition Zone. 1. MIC on Staphylococcus aureus in Tangpo-san was 100%, in Coptidis rhizoma was 100% and in Cravit was 0.1% 2. MIC on Staphylococcus epidermidis in Tangpo-san was 100%, in Coptidis rhizoma was 10% and in Cravit was 0.1%. 3. MIC on Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Tangpo-san, Coptidis rhizoma was not showing and in Cravit was 0.1%. 4. The size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureus for Tangpo-san was 13.3mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, for Coptidis rhizoma was 26mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$ and for Cravit was 31mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, showing the highest antibacterial effect. 5. The size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus epidermidis for Tangpo-san was 16mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, for Coptidis rhizoma was 25mm in $40{\mu}{\ell}$ and for Cravit was 34mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, showing the highest antibacterial effect. 6. The size of inhibition zone on Pseudomonas aeruginosa for Tangpo-san, Coptidis rhizoma was not and for Cravit was 24.7mm in $50{\mu}l$, showing the antibacterial effect. In addition, the results shows that the herbal eye drops, Tangpo-san and Coptidis rhizoma can be used to cure Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis keratitis and if further study is performed, the use of herbal eye drops will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.
The purposes of this study is to analyze the formative relationship between artistic eye-makeup and clothes design by focusing on the period from 2000 to 2010 and to find out the development direction of the next makeup design. This study considered formative theory to analyze the formative relationship between artistic eye-makeup and clothes design of $Marian$$L.$$Davis$ and $Marilyn$$R.$$Delong's$ theory, and analyzed the formative relationship between artistic eye-makeup and clothes design in an aspect of line and form, color and material, The results are as follows: First, the shapes of the artistic eye-makeup such as tear drops, and rectangular paisleys were similar with the form of clothes such as the hourglass, cylinders and mix-types. Second, monotonic color coordination mainly appeared and sometimes contrast color coordination that induced complex contrast coordination were apparent as well. Third, the objects of the artistic eye-makeup such as glitter papers, spangles and beads had similar features as the material of clothes such as silk and spangle, and contrast was partially used like colors. The results suggest that artistic eye-makeup and clothes have an organic relationship, and artistic eye-makeup is changed with formative elements of clothes.
Purpose: LASIK, one of the currently popular ophthalmic procedures, can sometimes result in dry eye symptoms. In the patient who had underwent LASIK operation, the periorbital surgery may be more likely to lead to such a complication as dry eye symptom. We would like to report a case of corneal abrasion occurred after transconjunctival blepharoplasty in post-LASIK state and suggest the method about preventing the complication. Methods: A 30-year-old female patient underwent transconjunctival blepharoplasty and microfat graft into the face. She had history of LASIK operation 2 years ago. Corneal protector was applied to both eye during transconjunctival operation. After the surgery, she complained of visual blurring at left side. Ophthalmic examination revealed corneal abrasion of left eye. Results: Cornea protecting lens was applied to left eye for 2 weeks. Steroid and antibiotic eye drops were applied for relieving the symptoms and the prevention from progressing of complication. After 1 week, visual power and acuity was recovered to preoperative state. No other specific complications happened. Conclusion: Post-LASIK patient may have possibility of decreased corneal sensation and tear production. Preoperative ophthalmic examination is recommended for the prevention of complication. When corneal protector is applied, we suggest Optagel$^{(R)}$ as a useful lubricant.
