Ultrahigh Birefringence and Extremely Low Loss Slotted-core Microstructure Fiber in Terahertz Regime

  • A novel slotted-core hexagonal photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for terahertz (THz) wave guiding is proposed in this paper. A trade-off managed between effective material loss (EML) and birefringence for efficient guidance of THz waves is illustrated in this article. The rectangular slot shaped air-holes break the symmetry of the porous-core which offers ultra-high birefringence of $8.8{\times}10^{-2}$. The proposed structure offers low bending loss of $1.07{\times}10^{-34}cm^{-1}$ and extremely low effective material loss (EML) of $0.035cm^{-1}$ at an operating frequency of 1.0 THz. In addition other guiding properties such as power fraction, dispersion and confinement loss are also discussed. The proposed THz waveguide can be effectively used for convenient transmission of THz waves.

Development of evidence-based protocol to maintain high humidity of incubator in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant (초극소 저출생체중아의 고농도 가습환경 유지를 위한 근거중심 프로토콜 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the current humidification state of incubator, the factors disturbing high humidification and to establish the evidence-based nursing protocol to maintain it. Methods: The subjects were 15 infants who were born with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) from May to October, 2007, and data were collected during the first 3 days and analyzed with SPSS WIN program. Results: The goal of humidity level in incubator was 95%, but mean humidity levels were 89.7%(1st day), 91.9%(2nd day), and 91.8%(3rd day)(p<0.001). The disturbing factors were opening frequency and duration of incubator door and window by caregivers. The handling of infants by nurses and doctors happened more frequently during the first day. Especially, nurses handled them more often than others, but the duration of opening during the invasive procedures by doctors was longer than others. The opening frequency had negative correlation with duration(r=-.779, p<.01). Conclusion: So the evidence-based protocol for maintaining high humidity in incubator for ELBW infants during the first 3 days and next 2 days was made. Furthermore we need to educate NICU nurses and doctors about minimal handling.

Optimum Design of a Shield Plate to minimize Extremely-Law-Frequency Magnetic Fields produced by Bus Bars (분전반 모선에 의해 발생되는 극저주파 자기장 저감을 위한 차폐판 최적 설계)

  • This paper deals with the optimal design of a shield plate in order to minimize Extremely-Low-Frequency(ELF) magnetic fields generated from three-phase bus bars. Combining an evolutionary strategy with a 3D finite element analysis tool, the main dimensions of the shield plate are sought out. The optimization procedure consists of two separated design stages to take into account all foreseen structures of the plate. In the first stage, the basic dimensions of the plate are optimized including the distance between the plate and the bus bars. Then the usefulness of the additional structures such as a slit and fillet is investigated in the second stage. Finally the optimum design of the shield plate is suggested from the viewpoint of the shielding effectiveness and manufacturing cost.

Effects of 60-Hz Magnetic Fields on DNA Damage Responses in HT22 Mouse Hippocampal Cell Lines

  • Previously, we investigated extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) on diverse DNA damage responses, such as phosphorylated H2AX (${\gamma}H2AX$), comet tail moments, and aneuploidy production in several non-tumorigenic epithelial or fibroblast cell lines. However, the effect of ELF-MF on DNA damage responses in neuronal cells may not be well evaluated. Here, we investigated the effects of ELF-MF on the DNA damage responses in HT22 non-tumorigenic mouse neuronal cells. Exposure to a 60-Hz, 2 mT ELF-MF did not produce any increased ${\gamma}H2AX$ expression, comet tail moments, or aneuploidy formation. However, 2 mT ELF-MF transiently increased the cell number. From the results, ELF-MF could affect the DNA damage responses differently, depending on the cell lines.

  • A number of studies have demonstrated recently nonthermal interactions of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields with cellular systems, such as the cells of the immune system. Particular concern came from epidemiological findings, which correlated environmental exposure of human body to weak electromagnetic fields with an elevated risk for developing certain type of leukemias and cancers. Several home/environmental sources generating extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields, such as 50 - 60 Hz high-voltage transmission lines, video display terminals, electric blankets, clinical nuclear magnetic resonance imaging procedures, etc., may interact with the human body. In this study we examined the effects of static magnetic fields (SMF) on the phagocytosis of the murine peritoneal macrophages (C57BL/6). The cells were exposed in vitro for 24 h at 37$^{\circ}C$ to 400 G SMF. The phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages was determined with a luminometer. Exposure to the SMF decreased phagocytic activity of murine peritoneal macrophages. In order to provide a more exact mechanism of the phenomenon, we analyzed peritoneal macrophages for alteration in their proteomes. The expression levels of these 5 proteins were increased in the SMF. In total 5 proteins which were differentially expressed in the SMF compared with control group were identified. The expression levels of these 5 proteins were increased in the SMF.

  • The magnetic field of the extremely low frequency that occurs in the substation facilities was surveyed to present ways to broaden understanding of the magnetic field characteristics. We have investigated the level of the magnetic fields in the substation areas and control rooms of 25 substations in the metropolitan area in accordance with the measurement method of IEC CISPR(IEC/TC106 PT 62110). We propose objective and reliable policy approaches such as the electromagnetic field certification system to more accurately understand the property of magnetic field.

Benzodiazepine System is Involved in Hyperalgesia in Rats Induced by the Exposure to Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Fields

  • Many reports demonstrate that extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MFs, 60 Hz) may be involved in hyperalgesia. In a previous investigation, we suggested that MFs may produce hyperalgesia and such a response may be regulated by the benzodiazepine system. In order to further confirm this effect of MFs, we used diazepam and/or flumazenil with MFs exposure. When testing the pain threshold of rats using hot plate tests, MFs or diazepam ($0.5\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a benzodiazepine receptor agonist) induced hyperalgesic effects with the reduction of latency. These effects were blocked by a pretreatment of flumazenil (1.5 mg/kg, i.p.; a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist). When the rats were exposed simultaneously to MFs and diazepam, the latency tended to decrease without statistical significance. The induction of hyperalgesia by co-exposure to MFs and diazepam was also blocked by flumazenil. However, the pretreatment of GABA receptor antagonists such as bicuculline ($0.1\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a $GABA_A$ antagonist) or phaclofen ($10\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a $GABA_B$ antagonist) did not antagonize the hyperalgesic effect of MFs. These results suggest that the benzodiazepine system may be involved in MFs-induced hyperalgesia.
