In this study, we analyzed the relationships between weather factors and photosystem II activity (Fv/Fm), as a measure of photochemical efficiency, in three cool-season turfgrasses commonly planted on golf courses in Jeju, South Korea: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). In all three turfgrasses, Fv/Fm was higher during late summer than during early summer. However, in late summer, Fv/Fm was significantly lower in perennial ryegrass than in the other two species. In early summer, Fv/Fm in perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass was positively correlated with mean low temperature and extreme minimum temperature, whereas, in late summer, this parameter in Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass was positively correlated with relative humidity, and in creeping bentgrass was negatively correlated with mean high temperature, mean low temperature, and extreme maximum temperature. These results indicate that raising low temperatures is favorable for perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass in early summer, whereas, in late summer, the lowering of high temperatures proves to be beneficial for creeping bentgrass, and raising relative humidity is conducive to the growth of Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. These findings will contribute to improving the selection and management of turfgrasses on golf courses and sports fields.
The study uses a regional climate model to check future changes in extreme climate, to calculate extreme indexes presented by STARDEX, and to analyze the trends to predict the continuity and changes in the spatial distribution of extreme climate in the future. An analysis of extreme climate indices showed that they are likely to increase in the Seoul metropolitan area, in Gyeonggi-do, in Yongdong in Gangwon-do, and in the southern shore region of Korea. It is, however, forecasted to diminish in the central inland region. The analysis also showed that the average temperature in Korea will increase because of climate change. On the other hand, an analysis of extreme rainfall indexes showed that the trend of heavy rainfall threshold is 0.229 in Seogwipo, the greatest five-day rainfall is 5.692 in Seogwipo, and the longest dry period is 0.099 in Sokcho. Of extreme temperature indexes, the trend of Hotdays threshold is 0.777 in Incheon and the longest heat wave is 0.162 in Uljin. The Coldnight threshold is 0.075 in Inje and -0.193 in Tongyeong, according to the analysis.

Unprecedented weather phenomena are occurring because of climate change: extreme heavy rains, heat waves, and severe rain storms after the rainy season. Recently, the frequency of these abnormal phenomena has increased. However, regular pattern or cycles cannot be found. Analysis of annual data or annual average data, which has been established a research method of climate change, should be applied to find frequency and tendencies of extreme climate events. In this paper, extreme indicators of precipitation and temperature marked by objectivity and consistency were established to analyze data collected by 66 observatories throughout Korea operated by the Meteorological Administration. To assess the statistical significance of the data, linear regression and Kendall-Tau method were applied for statistical diagnosis. The indicators were analyzed to find tendencies. The analysis revealed that an increase of precipitation along with a decrease of the number of rainy days. A seasonal trend was also found: precipitation rate and the heavy rainfall threshold increased to a greater extent in the summer(June-August) than in the winter (September-November). In the meanwhile, a tendency of temperature increase was more prominent in the winter (December-February) than in the summer (June-August). In general, this phenomenon was more widespread in inland areas than in coastal areas. Furthermore, the number of winter frost days diminished throughout Korea. As was mentioned in the literature, the progression of climate change has influenced the increase of temperature in the winter.

We have generated Ne-Xe plasma in dense plasma focus device with hypocycloidal pinch for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and investigated an electron temperature. We have applied an input voltage 4.5 kV to the capacitor bank of 1.53 uF and the diode chamber has been filled with Ne-Xe(30%) gas in accordance with pressure. If we assumed that the focused plasma regions satisfy the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions, the electron temperature of the hypocycloidal pinch plasma focus could be obtained by the optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The electron temperature has been measured by Boltzmann plot. The light intensity is proportion to the Bolzman factor. We have been measured the electron temperature by observation of relative Ne-Xe intensity. The EUV emission signal whose wavelength is about 6~16 nm has been detected by using a photo-detector (AXUV-100 Zr/C, IRD) and the line intensity has been detected by using a HR4000CG Composite-grating Spectrometer.

Military devices and systems powered by batteries need to operate at extreme temperature and estimate the available capacity of the battery at different temperature conditions. However, accurate estimation of battery capacity is challenging due to the temperature-sensitive nature of electrochemical energy storage. In this paper, Peukert's equation with temperature factor is derived, and methods for estimating the absolute capacity of lithium-polymer battery and the state-of-charge(SOC) with respect to varying currents and temperatures are presented. The proposed estimation method is experimentally verified under three different discharge currents(0.5 A, 1 A, 3 A) and six different temperatures ranging from -30 to 45 deg. C. The results show the proposed method reduces the Peukert's estimation error by up to 30 % under or at extreme condition.
A frozen fringe plays a key role in frost heave development in soils. Previous studies have focused on the physical and mechanical properties of the frozen fringe, such as overall hydraulic conductivity, water content and pore pressure. It has been proposed that the thickness of the frozen fringe controls frost heave behavior, but this effect has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study used a temperature-controllable cell to investigate the impact of frozen fringe thickness on the characteristics of frost heave. A series of laboratory tests was performed with various temperature boundary conditions and specimen heights, revealing that: (1) the amount and rate of development of frost heave are dependent on the frozen fringe thickness; (2) the thicker the frozen fringe, the thinner the resulting ice lens; and (3) care must be taken when using the frost heave ratio to characterize frost heave and evaluate frost susceptibility because the frost heave ratio is not a normalized factor but a specimen height-dependent factor.

This paper describes the procedures to estimate for the design thermal loads on prestressed concrete box girder bridges on th basis of the extreme analysis of the temperature data obtained from long-term thermal analyses. Long-term thermal analyses using the environmental data for three years were conducted, and the extreme distributions of th thermal loads are then determined by the tail-equivalence method, and the thermal loads corresponding to selected return period are calculated. Finally, the results are compared to the specifications suggested in a current design code for thermal loads.

This paper mainly describes the wind load assumption of 765kV transmission towers. We analyzed wind velocity data a meteorological observatories to get the wind velocity of 50 years return period by using Gumbel I type extreme value distribution. By multi-correlative regression analysis method, wind velocity at no observation site was obtained. Reference dynamics wind pressure map was obtained from above analysis and the wind pressure was classified as three regio in high temperature season.
We have screened 766 strains of fungi from the BIOTEC Culture Collection (BCC) for xylanases working in extreme pH and/or high temperature conditions, the so-called extreme xylanases. From a total number of 32 strains producing extreme xylanases, the strain BCC7928, identified by using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence of rRNA to be a Marasmius sp., was chosen for further characterization because of its high xylanolytic activity at temperature as high as $90^{\circ}C$. The crude enzyme possessed high thermostability and pH stability. Purification of this xylanase was carried out using an anion exchanger followed by hydrophobic interaction chromatography, yielding the enzyme with >90% homogeneity. The molecular mass of the enzyme was approximately 40 kDa. The purified enzyme retained broad working pH range of 4-8 and optimal temperature of $90^{\circ}C$. When using xylan from birchwood as substrate, it exhibits $K_m$ and $V_{max}$ values of $2.6{\pm}0.6\;mg/ml$ and $428{\pm}26\;U/mg$, respectively. The enzyme rapidly hydrolysed xylans from birchwood, beechwood, and exhibited lower activity on xylan from wheatbran, or celluloses from carboxymethylcellulose and Avicel. The purified enzyme was highly stable at temperature ranges from 50 to $70^{\circ}C$. It retained 84% of its maximal activity after incubation in standard buffer containing 1% xylan substrate at $70^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. This thermostable xylanase should therefore be useful for several industrial applications, such as agricultural, food and biofuel.
