  • We demonstrate a novel all-optical packet switching system that is suitable for optical ring networks. For the demonstration, video signals are encoded into optical packets which are composed of header and payload. The optical packets are all-optically processed at a switching node based on all-optical header processor, packet-level clock extraction, bit-level clock extraction, all-optical data format converter and so on.

  • The extraction of lip region is essential to Lip Reading, which is a field of image processing to get some meaningful information by the analysis of lip movement from human face image. Many conventional methods to extract lip region are proposed. One is getting the position of lip by using geometric face structure. The other discriminates lip and skin regions by using color information only. The former is more complex than the latter, however it can analyze black and white image also. The latter is very simple compared to the former, however it is very difficult to discriminate lip and skin regions because of close similarity between these two regions. And also, the accuracy is relatively low compared to the former. Conventional analysis of color coordinate systems are mostly based on specific extraction scheme for lip regions rather than coordinate system itself. In this paper, the method for selection of effective color coordinate system and chromaticity transformation to discriminate these two lip and skin region are proposed.

  • An excess carrier lifetime extraction method is derived for physics-based insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) models with consideration of the latest development in IGBT modeling. On the basis of the 2D mixed-mode Sentaurus simulation, the clamp turn-off test is simulated to obtain the tail current. The proposed excess carrier lifetime extraction method is then performed using the simulated data. The comparison between the extracted results and actual lifetime directly obtained from the numerical device model precisely demonstrates the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, the appropriate thermal storage time of an air-conditioning system with slab thermal storage was considered by use of summer measurement values. Two standards of heat extraction rate and criterion function were established as the standard that evaluates appropriateness. When heat extraction rate was a standard, zero hour and seven hours were obtained as appropriate thermal storage time, in the case of evaluation by energy consumption and running cost individually. Also, when criterion function was a standard, the difference between energy consumption and running cost was small, it was because the weight function to room air temperature deviation was much bigger than heat extraction rate.

  • A fully packed capillary electrochromatographic (CEC) microchip with an on-column micro-solid phase extraction (SPE) bed for the preconcentration and separation of organic analytes was prepared. A linear microchannel with monodisperse colloidal silica packing was formed on a cyclic olefinic copolymer microchip with two reservoirs on both ends. Silver-cemented silica packing frit structure was formed at the entrance of the microchannel by electroless plating treatment as a base layer. A gold coating was formed on it by reducing $Au^{3+}$ to gold with hydroxylamine. Finally micro-SPE bed was formed by self-assembly adsorption of 1-dodecanethiol on it. Micro-SPE beds were about 100-150 ${\mu}m$ long. Approximately $10^3$ fold sensitivity enhancements for Sulforhodamine B, and Fluorescein in nM concentration levels were possible with 80 s preconcentration. Basic extraction characteristics were studied.

  • This study designed and implemented a system to extract of vowel from a word. The system is comprised of a voice feature extraction module and a neutral network module. The voice feature extraction module use a LPC(Linear Prediction Coefficient) model to extract a voice feature from a word. The neutral network module is comprised of a learning module and voice recognition module. The learning module sets up a learning pattern and builds up a neutral network to learn. Using the information of a learned neutral network, a voice recognition module extracts a vowel from a word. A neutral network was made to learn selected vowels(a, eo, o, e, i) to test the performance of a implemented vowel extraction recognition machine. Through this experiment, could confirm that speech recognition module extract of vowel from 4 words.

  • This paper presents a rule extraction algorithm RE to acquire explicit rules from trained neural networks. The validity of extracted rules has been confirmed using 6 different data sets. Based on experimental results, we conclude that extracted rules from RE predict more accurately and robustly than neural networks themselves and rules obtained from an inductive learning algorithm do. Rule extraction algorithm for neural networks are important for incorporating knowledge obtained from trained networks into knowledge based systems. In lieu of this, the proposed RE algorithm contributes to the trend toward developing hybrid and versatile knowledge-based system including expert systems and knowledge-based decision su, pp.rt systems.

  • Microwave-assisted extraction, which is known to rapidly extract target compounds from natural products, was monitored by response surface methodology (RSM) while extracting ginsenosides by using microwave extraction system (MES) equipped with closed vessels, and was confirmed on its extraction efficiency. On the whole, coefficients of determinations $(R^2)$ of the models on ginsenoside contents of extracts with various extraction conditions were above 0.83 (p<0.1). $Ginsenoside-Rb_2,\;-Rc,\;-Re\;and\;-Rg_1$ were maximized in $140^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and $50\~75\%$ range of ethanol concentration. Unknown compound peak on HPLC chromatogram observed at extraction temperature over $120^{\circ}C$, increased at the extraction temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. The extraction temperature of $ginsenoside-Rb_2$ and -Re increased from $129^{\circ}C\;to\;147^{\circ}C$ with including unknown compound, and $R^2$ of the models on ginsenoside contents of extracts increased with including unknown compound into ginsenoside $Rb_2$ and Re. Contents of unknown compound were minimized in $67.33\%$ of ethanol concentration, $99.34^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and 3.65 min of extraction time. Ginsenoside contents extracted by microwave system for 8 min showed a similar tendency to those of the current extraction method for 40 hrs.

  • This work presents a series of experimental tests on new practical approaches in membrane design to improve extraction capacity and rate. We chose an extraction system involving Aliquat 336 as the extractant and Cd(II) as the metal ion to be extracted to demonstrate these new approaches. The core element in the new membrane assembly was the extractant loaded sintered glass filter. This membrane assembly provided a large interface area between the extractant and the aqueous solution containing metal ions. By recycling the aqueous solution through the membrane assembly, the extraction rate was significantly improved. The membrane assembly also offered good extraction capacity.
