Support vector machines(SVM) may perform poorly in the presence of noise variables; in addition, it is difficult to identify the importance of each variable in the resulting classifier. A feature selection can improve the interpretability and the accuracy of SVM. Most existing studies concern feature selection in the linear SVM through penalty functions yielding sparse solutions. Note that one usually adopts nonlinear kernels for the accuracy of classification in practice. Hence feature selection is still desirable for nonlinear SVMs. In this paper, we compare the performances of nonlinear feature selection methods such as component selection and smoothing operator(COSSO) and kernel iterative feature extraction(KNIFE) on simulated and real data sets.

An application of Gammatone auditory filterbank for emotion recognition from speech is described in this paper. Gammatone filterbank is a bank of Gammatone filters which are used as a preprocessing stage before applying feature extraction methods to get the most relevant features for emotion recognition from speech. In the feature extraction step, the energy value of output signal of each filter is computed and combined with other of all filters to produce a feature vector for the learning step. A feature vector is estimated in a short time period of input speech signal to take the advantage of dependence on time domain. Finally, in the learning step, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used to create a model for each emotion class and recognize a particular input emotional speech. In the experiment, feature extraction based on Gammatone filterbank (GTF) shows the better outcomes in comparison with features based on Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) which is a well-known feature extraction for speech recognition as well as emotion recognition from speech.
While the circulation of images become active, various requirements to manage increasing database are raised. The content-based technology is one of methods to satisfy these requirements. The image is represented by feature vectors extracted by various methods in the content-based technology. The global feature method insures fast matching speed because the feature vector extracted by the global feature method is formed into a standard shape. The global feature extraction methods are classified into two categories, the spatial feature extraction and statistical feature extraction. And each group is divided by what kind of information is used, color feature or gray scale feature. In this paper, we introduce various global feature extraction technologies and compare their performance by accuracy, recall-precision graph, ANMRR, feature vector size and matching time. According to the experiments, the spatial features show good performance in non-geometrical modifications, and the extraction technologies that use color and histogram feature show the best performance.

Face is considered to be one of the biometrics in person identification. But Face recognition is a high dimensional pattern recognition problem. Even low-resolution face images generate huge dimensional feature space. The aim of this paper is to present a fast feature extraction method for real time human face recognition. first, It compute eigen-vector and eigen-value by Principle component analysis on inputed human face image, and propose method of feature extraction that make feature vector by apply gabor filter to computed eigen-vector. And it compute feature value which multiply by made eigen-value. This study simulations performed using the ORL Database.
Speech recognition is one of the fascinating fields in the area of Computer science. Accuracy of speech recognition system may reduce due to the presence of noise present in speech signal. Therefore noise removal is an essential step in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and this paper proposes a new technique called combined thresholding for noise removal. Feature extraction is process of converting acoustic signal into most valuable set of parameters. This paper also concentrates on improving Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features by introducing Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform (DWPT) in the place of Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) block to provide an efficient signal analysis. The feature vector is varied in size, for choosing the correct length of feature vector Self Organizing Map (SOM) is used. As a single classifier does not provide enough accuracy, so this research proposes an Ensemble Support Vector Machine (ESVM) classifier where the fixed length feature vector from SOM is given as input, termed as ESVM_SOM. The experimental results showed that the proposed methods provide better results than the existing methods.

In this paper we propose a new feature vector for recognition of the facial expression based on Gibbs distributions which are well suited for representing the spatial continuity. The extracted feature vectors are invariant under translation rotation, and scale of an facial expression imege. The Algorithm for recognition of a facial expression contains two parts: the extraction of feature vector and the recognition process. The extraction of feature vector are comprised of modified 2-D conditional moments based on estimated Gibbs distribution for an facial image. In the facial expression recognition phase, we use discrete left-right HMM which is widely used in pattern recognition. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, experiments for recognition of four universal expression (anger, fear, happiness, surprise) was conducted with facial image sequences on Workstation. Experiment results reveal that the proposed scheme has high recognition rate over 95%.
We propose a method to construct composite feature vector based on discriminant analysis for face recognition. For this, we first extract the holistic- and local-features from whole face images and local images, which consist of the discriminant pixels, by using a discriminant feature extraction method. In order to utilize both advantages of holistic- and local-features, we evaluate the amount of the discriminative information in each feature and then construct a composite feature vector with only the features that contain a large amount of discriminative information. The experimental results for the FERET, CMU-PIE and Yale B databases show that the proposed composite feature vector has improvement of face recognition performance.
In this paper, feature vector extraction methods and classification algorithms for the automatic classification of transient signals in underwater are discussed. A feature vector extraction method using wavelet transform, which shows good performance with small number of coefficients, is proposed and compared with the existing classical methods. For the automatic classification, artificial neural networks such as multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RBF), and MLP-Class are utilized, where those neural networks as well as extracted feature vectors are combined to improve the performance and reliability of the proposed algorithm. It is confirmed by computer simulation with Traco's standard transient data set I and simulated data that the proposed feature vector extraction method and classification algorithm perform well, assuming that the energy of a given transient signal is sufficiently larger than that of a ambient noise, that there are the finite number of noise sources, and that there does not exist noise sources more than two simultaneously.
Transient signals in underwater show several characterisrics, that is, short duration, strong nonstationarity, various types of transient sources, which make it difficult to analyze and classify transient signals. In this paper, the feature vector extraction method for transient SOMAR signals is discussed by applying digital signal processing methods to the analysis of transient signals. A feature vector extraction methods using wavelet transform, which enable us to obtain better recognition rate than automatic classification using the classical method, are proposed. It is confirmed by simulation that the proposed method using wavelet transform performs better than the classical method even with smaller number of feature vectors. Especially, the feature vector extraction method using PR-QMF wavelet transform with the Daubechies coefficients is shown to perform well in noisy environment with easy implementation.
This paper presents a new approach to translation and rotation invariant feature extraction for image texture retrieval. For the rotation invariant feature extraction, we invent angular projection along angular frequency in Polar coordinate system. The translation and rotation invariant feature vector for representing texture images is constructed by the averaged magnitude and the standard deviations of the magnitude of the Fourier transform spectrum obtained by the proposed angular projection. In order to easily implement the angular projection, the Radon transform is employed to obtain the Fourier transform spectrum of images in the Polar coordinate system. Then, angular projection is applied to extract the feature vector. We present our experimental results to show the robustness against the image rotation and the discriminatory capability for different texture images using MPEG-7 data set. Our Experiment result shows that the proposed rotation and translation invariant feature vector is effective in retrieval performance for the texture images with homogeneity, isotropy and local directionality.
