  • Turbo-charging or Super-charging has been used to boost engine power for Gasoline Engine and Diesel Engine came to the world at the beginning of $20^{th}$ century. So far Turbo-Charger has enjoyed a high reputation in the charging filed for its technical advantages such as no demand of operation power from engine and an excellent charging effect in the event of a static operation at mid- and high engine speed. A mechanically driven Super-Charger, however, is now emerging in order to meet demands of the age of speed such as high engine power for a quick change of the driving mode - high engine torque even at low engine speed. Since Super-Charger needs driving power from engine, it cannot improve its relatively higher fuel consumption against that of Turbo-Charger. This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of Super-Charger. Super-Charger using Screw-type compressor which has already had a considerable base in air compressor market will fulfill this purpose of improving fuel consumption by minimizing operation power owing to no charging at idling or partially loading driving. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve this minimization of operation power.

  • Monitoring of impact loads is a very important technique in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). However, in most cases it is not possible to measure impact events directly, so they need to be reconstructed. Impact load reconstruction refers to the problem of estimating an input to a dynamic system when the system output and the impulse response function are usually known. Generally this leads to a so called ill-posed inverse problem. It is reasonable to use prior knowledge of the force in order to develop more suitable reconstruction strategies and to increase accuracy. An impact event is characterized by a short time duration and a spatial concentration. Moreover the force time history of an impact has a specific shape, which also can be taken into account. In this contribution these properties of the external force are employed to create a sample-force-dictionary and thus to transform the ill-posed problem into a sparse recovery task. The sparse solution is acquired by solving a minimization problem known as basis pursuit denoising (BPDN). The reconstruction approach shown here is capable to estimate simultaneously the magnitude of the impact and the impact location, with a minimum number of accelerometers. The possibility of reconstructing the impact based on a noisy output signal is first demonstrated with simulated measurements of a simple beam structure. Then an experimental investigation of a real beam is performed.

  • From the ancient civilization, Japanese have maintained a homogeneous domestic culture while they have constantly received external ideas. They have received many conflicting and contradictory ideas and phenomena and surprisingly, they blend them successfully into their own culture. For them, the series of impacts from other civilizations have dissolved each equivalent individual elements for their successive culture. The introduction of Portuguese arquebus in the mid 16th century was a monumental event of Japanese technological development based on military initiatives. In terms of the Japanese import of western civilization from the time onward, the Meiji restoration could be explained the extension of the process modernization. Modern Japanese design is a unique case created through the close relationship between industry and cultural traditions. Such a role of traditional values and an alliance between political decision and economic program in post war years show two-fold implications

  • We have made semi-analytical studies to investigate the configurations of caustics and the probability distribution of the flux factor K for the binary microlensing including external shears. A parametric equation of critical curve is derived in a 4th order complex polynomial. We present the topological dependencies of the caustics for selected gamma parameters (0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.3, 2.0, and 2.5) and convergence terms (0., 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0). For the purpose of analyzing the efficiency of High Amplification Event (HAE) on each caustics, we examine the probability distribution of the flux factor by a Monte Carlo method. Changing the separation of the binary system from 0.8 to 1.3 (in normalied unit), we examine the probability distribution of the K-values in various gamma parameters. The relationship between gamma parameters, seperations and their probabilties of the flux factor K have been studied. Our results show that the relatively higher K values (K>1.5) are increased as increasing the separation of the binary system. We therfore conclude that, in the N-body microlensing, the probabilities of higher HAEs are inversely proportional to the star density as well. We also point out that the present research might be used as a preliminary step toward investigating heavy N-body microlensing simulations.

  • On 2018 February 5 a gamma ray burst with trigger time 04:25:29.3 UT was detected by Swift BAT and this event was named GRB 180205A. We observed the optical afterglow of GRB 180205A starting from about 1 hour after the burst until February 22 in the optical bands with the 1m telescope of Deokheung Optical Astronomy Observatory (DOAO), the 1m telescope at Mt. Lemmon Optical Astronomy Observatory(LOAO) and the 0.8m and 0.25m telescopes at McDonald Observatory. According to the fireball model, which is a well-accepted and conventional model for the afterglow of the GRB, the mechanism of the afterglow is that the expanding external blast wave of the GRB successively collides with the ambient medium and loses its energy, and as a result emits radiation at wavelengths longer than gamma rays. Here we present optical photometry and light curve of the afterglow in the R band and analyze it to characterize GRB 180205A.

  • The present research is to study a variation of skirt length in the time series, from 1955 to 1986. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The most important event is the acceptance of Mini skirts during this period. This phenomenon will play an important role in later skirt length. 2. The year of the shortest skirt length is 1972, while the year of the longest skirt length is 1983. 3. Based upon the year of the shortest skirt length, the periods of the same skirt length are as follows; 1956-1975. 1964-1978. 1959, 1960-1980, 1981. 1961-1982. This phenomenon is irregularly appeared in this study, but shows the change of recurring skirt length. 4. The skirt length has been changed slowly and continuously during the long period of time. In particular, to reach the shortest skirt length takes longer time than that of the longest skirt length. 5. It has taken 6-8 years to reach the top period of Mini skirts (1971-1973) since shorts are introduced. Comparing this phenomenon in Korea with that in Japan, the time difference is about two years. 6. The periods of various skirts length are the year of 1970-1971 and the year of 1972-1973; This result is assumed that individual persons accept sooner or later the changed skirt length. 7. It is belived that Mini skirts are appeared and popularized by external factors. Once Mini skirts are accepted, we can expect that they will be continuosly changed in the course of recurring skirt length.

  • The noise is one of the serious problems concerning helicopters operations. The issue of helicopter external noise generated mainly from a helicopter rotor has always affected the use of rotorcrafts, especially in the urban environment. The noise sources depend on the flight configurations. In particular, a noise generated by the interaction between blades and tip vortices mainly occurs during descent flight. This noise is called blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise, and this BVI noise is particularly penalizing for helicopters. In this paper, a numerical study to capture the BVI noise is carried out. The numerical study is performed in two phases. In the first phase, a 2D simulation based on parallel BYI event of Kitapliglu et al experiment is performed. In the second phase, 3D simulation based on HART Ⅱ experiment is performed. Several experimental data such as thrust, torque, blade sectional load, its derivative and vortex location are compared with calculation results and the comparison showed reasonably good agreement.

  • In the event of a fire on the outer walls of an architectural structure, through real scale experiments with the purpose of estimating the Flame Trajectory, the behavior and risks of expanded combustion to an upper architectural compartment of the Fire Plume Ejected from an Opening according to changes in the aspect ratio of the opening were examined. The results showed that the more the heat release rate of the fire source increased, the heat capacity of the Fire Plume Ejected from the Opening also increased, and for the case of heptane when compared with methanol or ethanol, the results showed a trend for a significant amount of unburned gas to remain. The results also showed that the larger the aspect ratio was, the more likely it was for the Flame Trajectory to approach the outer walls and rise up. In each of the experiment conditions, as the flame rose from the lower part of the wall to the upper part of the wall, a steady decrease was shown for the temperature distribution. Also by quantitatively analyzing the amount of unburned gas that remained, a method to estimate the temperature of the Fire Plume Ejected from an Opening for a traverse opening was implemented.

  • The influence of photoexcited nonequilibrium carriers on domain switching and photovoltaic current was investigated in two kinds of poled La-modified PbTiO$_3$ferroelectric ceramics, (Pb$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)TiO$_3$and (Pb$_{0.76}$La$_{0.24}$)TiO$_3$, under illumination in the absence of external electric field. Both photovoltaic current and cumulative AE event counts increased with illumination time. The observed nonsteady-state photovoltaic current could be explained on the basis of the cycles of a series of physical events consisting the establishment of space charge field by photoexcited carriers trapped at the grain boundaries, the photoinduced domain switching, and the increase in the remanent polarization. An analysis of energy distribution of the observed AE signals also revealed that the space charge field in (Pb$_{0.85}$La$_{0.15}$)TiO$_3$allowed both 18$0^{\circ}C$ and 90$^{\circ}$domains to be switched during illumination.
