  • 액정 디스플레이(LCD)의 대형화 및 저가격화와 더불어 전체 소비전력의 90% 이상, 모듈(module) 원가의 50% 이상을 차지하는 백라이트에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이에 기존의 냉음극 형광램프(CCFL)뿐만 아니라 원가 절감 및 특성 향상 기술로서 외부전극 형광램프(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp), 면광원(Flat Fluorescent Lamp), 발광 다이오드 (Light Emitting Diode), 전계 방출램프(Field Emission Lamp) 등에 대한 개발이 활발히 진행되고 있는 바 이와 같은 다양한 기술의 경쟁을 통하여 보다 고품질 및 저원가 백라이트의 개발이 가능하여 액정 디스플레이의 경쟁력을 확대시킬 것으로 예상된다.

  • Characteristic properties of backlight arraying external electrode fluorescent lamps has been investigated indriving with a square wave from switch inverters. In the backlight of 17 inch-diagonal with 12 lamps, the efficiency of 65-70 1m/W with the luminance of 5,000-10,000 cd/$\textrm m^2$ has been achieved in the frequency range 40-80 kHz where the higher frequency provides the lower operating voltage in the range 1.0-2.0 kV. In the frequency above 80 kHz, a stable and an uniform luminance in the backlight panel can not be achieved.

  • We investigated influence of gas pressure and mixing ratio on the electro-optical properties of External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL). The experimental results indicated that luminance and efficiency became the maximum at lower gas pressure and Ar mixing ratio.

  • A circuit model simulating the electrical characteristics of EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) is proposed. The model is based on linear approximation that represents the equivalent resistance and capacitance as a function of power. Simulation waveforms and experimental results are presented to verify feasibility of the equivalent model.

  • A impedance model simulating the electrical characteristics of the External Electrode fluorescent lamp operated at high frequency is proposed. The model is constructed from a two parameter equation which is derived based on a set of two measurements. This is a readily constructed and computer simulator oriented model which is suitable for a preliminary design of electronic ballasts. Simulated and experimental results are used to verify the analytical discussions, and moreover, an electronic ballast design example using the proposed model is presented to further demonstrate its application.

  • In this study, It was studied about the luminance characteristics of 17 inch direct-type back light using EEFL(external electrode fluorescent lamp) and CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamp). The EEFL has a long life time because the electrode is installed outside of lamp. And it is produced in lower price than conventional CCFL. Moreover, it does not need process of installing internal electrode. However, the EEFL technology has several problems such as difficulty of designing driving inverter and preventing this phenomenon along the skin of lamps. We suggested two types of backlight unit for LCD TV application using the EEFL and the CCFL. We found optimized optical design parameters. We set the optical variation parameters such as lamp height, lamp distance, total thickness, and angles of inner walls. We achieved 7580 nits of center luminance, 82% of luminance uniformity by using 20 lamps of the EEFL and 7297 nits of center luminance, 78% of luminance uniformity by using 16 lamps of the CCFL.

  • In this paper, a external electrode fluorescent lamp driving inverter for LCD backlight is designed. AC input from a lamp-driven system to process up to two inverter system for the existing configuration of power-efficient than the system as well as to increase the volume and weight reduction, Furthermore low-cost advantage. AC power input in order to drive EEFL stable and AC 85V ~ 265V power factor increase in the PFC Block can be used for running the Inverter Block EEFL and composed.

  • In this paper, the luminance and resistance from different electrode materials of external electrode fluorescent lamp are measured and analyzed. New materials and process technology of external electrode are very important for the developed characteristics in lamp fabrication. In this experiments, three different types for the forming of external electrode are Cu and Al taping, silver paste, Ni and Cu electrode-less plating methods. In the measurements of luminance, the results of brightness by Ni and Au plating methods for the external electrode on lamp glass are presented and also compared with the results by the methods using different electrode materials. The measured resistance values of Ni and Au plating process showed a little bit higher than that of silver paste process in spite of developed results of brightness. But the Ni and Ni/Au plating processes are demonstrated best results and are also showed a little bit different brightness due to different previous sulfate etching treatments.

  • A new diagnostics of plasma electron temperature and plasma density is introduced with the observation of the light emission along the tube of external electrode fluorescent lamps. With two different methods operating an external electrode fluorescent lamp of outer diameter 4.0 mm and length 860 mm for the back-light source of 37-inch LCD-TVs, the lighting modes and the plasma properties are investigated. In the center balance operation, the light-emission propagates simultaneously from both sides of the high voltage electrodes to the center of the lamp, while in conventional operation the light-emission propagates from the one end of a high voltage to the other ground electrode. In the operation value of luminance $10,000{\sim}15,000cd/m^2$, the electron plasma thermal energy $(kT_e)$ is about $1.3{\sim}2.7eV$ with the electron density $(n_e)$ is about $(1.6{\sim}3.6){\times}10^{16}m^{-3}$.
