Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is attractive for EAP actuator due to its merit in terms of light weight, dry condition, large displacement output, low actuation voltage and low power consumption. The EAPap is based on cellulose paper, and is shown to involve primarily transport of ions in response to an external electric field. This actuating mechanism is similar to conductive polymer based actuators. For performance improvement of EAPap, hybrid actuators are tried. The actuators based on cellulose paper attached conducting polypyrrole, polyaniline and single wall carbon nanotube/polyaniline(emeraldine base) have been achieved by Electro chemical deposition and mechanical deposition of the polymers onto cellulose paper.
Current investigation deals with the thermal stability characteristics of carbon nanotube reinforced composite beams (CNTRC) on elastic foundation and subjected to external uniform temperature rise loading. The single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are supposed to have a distribution as being uniform or functionally graded form. The material properties of the matrix as well as reinforcements are presumed to be temperature dependent and evaluated through the extended rule of mixture which incorporates efficiency parameters to capture the size dependency of the nanocomposite properties. The governing differential equations are achieved based on the minimum total potential energy principle and Euler-Bernoulli beam model. The obtained results are checked with the available data in the literature. Numerical results are supplied to examine the effects of numerous parameters including length to thickness ratio, elastic foundations, temperature change, and nanotube volume fraction on the thermal stability behaviors of FG-CNT beams.

This paper describes the thermal analysis which can calculate the ablation depth and temperature distribution of the rocket nozzle liner allowing geometry change caused by the ablation of nozzle liner. In this analysis, Zvyagin's model is used for surface ablation and Yaroslavtseva's model for in-depth pyrolysis. A deforming finite-element grid is used to account for external-boundary movement due to the erosion of thermal liner. The accuracy of the present numerical method is evaluated with a rocket nozzle liner and the numerical solutions are favorably agreed with experimental data. The temporal variations of temperature and ablation depth at the thermal liner of another rocket nozzle are numerically simulated and the results are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the effects of kinetic constants for carbon-carbon and carbon-phenolic composites on the ablation depth of thermal liner.
The efficiency of coal-based activated carbon in removing methylene blue (MB) and phenol from aqueous solution was investigated in batch experiments. The batch adsorption kinetics were described by applying pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and first order reversible reaction. The results showed that the adsorption of MB and phenol occurs complexed process including external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained from Langmuir isotherm was 461.0 mg/g for MB and 194.6 mg/g for phenol, respectively. The values of activation parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G^0$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^0$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^0$) were also determined as -19.0~-14.9 kJ/mol, 25.4 kJ/mol, and 135.2 J/mol K for MB and 51.8~54.1 kJ/mol, -29.0 kJ/mol, and -76.4 kJ/mol K for phenol, respectively. The MB adsorption was found to be endothermic and spontaneous process. However, the CV adsorption was found to be exothermic and non-spontaneous process.
Thermogravimetric analysis of copolymer of acrylonitrile(95%) and methyl acrylate(5%) have been carried out to investigate the activation under $H_2O$(30%) -$N_2$atmosphere at various heating rates. The kinetic equation [$f=1-\exp(-a{\Delta}T)^b$] which was derived on the basis of the nonisothermal activation process of carbon fiber in the $H_2O$(30%)-$N_2$system showed good agreement with experimetal results. The pore volume upon conversion was in good agreement with the model of theoretical pore volume. The pore structures of the activated carbon fiber were influenced by the heating rate, activation temperature and internal-external conversions.
Biological treatment of RO concentrate from wastewater reuse process is known to be very difficult due to its high concentration of non-degradable organics and salt ions such as chloride, nitrate and phosphate. In this research, the treatment performance of MBR was examined using RO concentrate mixed with raw wastewater as the influent of MBR. Addition of PAC (powdered activated carbon) to MBR was also evaluated in order to enhance the treatment performance and stability. The performance of MBR for treating only RO concentrate decreased gradually although external carbon source was added. The average removal performance of MBR with and without PAC decreased from 99.1 %(98.8 %) to 94.9 %(91.4 %) for COD, 81.3 %(80.3 %) to 42.0 %(41.9 %) for T-N and 57.3(55.0 %) to 30.0 %(21.0 %) for T-P with the increase of RO concentrate mixing rate of 0 % to 20 % in the feed water. Addition of PAC showed positive effect on the performance of MBR for the removal of COD and phosphorus in case that the ratio of RO concentrate to feed water increased.
The present work aims to develop piezoresistive sensors of excellent piezoresistive response attributable to change in nanoscale structures of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) embedded in cement. MWNT was distributed in a cement matrix by means of polymer wrapping method in tandem with the ultrasonication process. DC conductivity of the prepared samples exhibited the electrical percolation behavior and therefore the dispersion method adopted in this study was deemed effective. The integrity of piezoresistive response of the sensors was assessed in terms of stability, the maximum electrical resistance change rate, and sensitivity. A composite sensor with MWNT 0.2 wt.% showed the lowest stability and sensitivity, while the maximum electrical resistance change rate exhibited by this sample was the highest (96 %) among others and even higher than those found in the literature. This observation was presumably attributed by the percolation threshold and the tunneling effect. As a result of the MWNT content (0.2 wt.%) of the sensor being near the percolation threshold (0.25 wt.%), MWNTs were close to each other to trigger tunneling in response of external loading. The sensor with MWNT 0.2 wt.% was able to maintain the repeatable sensing capability while sustaining a vehicular loading on road, demonstrating the feasibility in traffic flow sensing application.

It is important to develop the smart ventilation system in order to minimize a building energy consumption using ventilation. In this study, We evaluated the efficiency of the smart ventilation system being developed at the nursery. To evaluate the energy savings and carbon dioxide removal efficiency, two kinds of experimental conditions were compared. First, air conditioner and Smart HVAC system were operated. Second, air conditioner was operating and external air was put into the inside by rate of air circulation. It was more effective when working with air conditioning and ventilation system at the same time. If the Smart HVAC system is applied in a multi-use facility, indoor air quality will be comfortable and the social cost will be reduced.
This paper describes a finite element analysis (FEA) of the body frame of a subsea robot, Crabster200 (CR200). CR200 has six legs for mobility instead of screw type propellers, which distinguishes it from previous underwater robots such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Another distinguishing characteristic is the body frame, which is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). This body frame is designed as a rib cage structure in order to disperse the applied external loads and reduce the weight. The frame should be strong enough to support many devices for exploration and operation underwater. For a reasonable FEA, we carried out specimen tests. Using the obtained material properties, we performed a modal analysis and FEA for CR200 with a ready posture. Finally, this paper presents the FEA results for the CFRP body frame and the compares the characteristics of CFRP with conventional material, aluminum.
Fiber-reinforced composite materials with carbon, glass, and aramid fibers are widely applied to industrial field structures due to their excellent properties. However, carbon fibers are vulnerable to external impacts, whereas aramid fibers degrade when exposed to water. This study evaluated carbon/aramid fiber composites degraded and damaged by high-temperature saline environments using acoustic emission (AE). The test specimen was molded using an autoclave and immersed in seawater at 70 ℃ for 224 days. In order to imitate the damage, a 3-mm-diameter hole was drilled using a diamond drill. Additionally, the specimen with the perforation was repaired by patch attachment processing. Three-point bending was used to conduct the flexural experiment, and an AE sensor with a 150-kHz resonance frequency was attached to evaluate the damage and the effect of patch attachment. AE accumulative counts obtained at the maximum load were 69.2, 67.1, and 91.2 for a high-temperature seawater deteriorated condition, a hole specimen, and a repaired patch specimen, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of AE was detected at low values of 28 dB, 31.3 dB, and 30.3 dB.
