  • Temporal Sign Language Recognition (TSLR) from hand motion is an active area of gesture recognition research in facilitating efficient communication with deaf people. TSLR systems consist of two stages: a motion sensing step which extracts useful features from signers' motion and a classification process which classifies these features as a performed sign. This work focuses on two of the research problems, namely unknown time varying signal of sign languages in feature extraction stage and computing complexity and time consumption in classification stage due to a very large sign sequences database. In this paper, we propose a combination of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and application of the Single hidden Layer Feedforward Neural networks (SLFNs) trained by Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) to cope the limitations. DTW has several advantages over other approaches in that it can align the length of the time series data to a same prior size, while ELM is a useful technique for classifying these warped features. Our experiment demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed method with the recognition accuracy up to 98.67%. The proposed approach can be generalized to more detailed measurements so as to recognize hand gestures, body motion and facial expression.

  • In this paper, we propose using Hotelling's T2 statistic for the detection of a set of a set of differentially expressed (DE) genes in colorectal cancer based on its gene expression level in tumor tissues compared with those in normal tissues and to evaluate its predictivity which let us rank genes for the development of biomarkers for population screening of colorectal cancer. We compared the prediction rate based on the DE genes selected by Hotelling's T2 statistic and univariate t statistic using various prediction methods, a regulized discrimination analysis and a support vector machine. The result shows that the prediction rate based on T2 is better than that of univatiate t. This implies that it may not be sufficient to look at each gene in a separate universe and that evaluating combinations of genes reveals interesting information that will not be discovered otherwise.

  • The present paper investigates the propagation of Love-type wave in a composite structure comprised of imperfectly bonded piezoelectric layer with lower fiber-reinforced half-space with rectangular shaped irregularity at the common interface. Closed-form expression of phase velocity of Love-type wave propagating in the composite structure has been deduced analytically for electrically open and short conditions. Some special cases of the problem have also been studied. It has been found that the obtained results are in well-agreement to the Classical Love wave equation. Significant effects of various parameters viz. irregularity parameter, flexibility imperfectness parameter and viscoelastic imperfectness parameter associated with complex common interface, dielectric constant and piezoelectric coefficient on phase velocity of Love-type wave has been reported. Numerical computations and graphical illustrations have been carried out to demonstrate the deduced results for various cases. Moreover, comparative study has been performed to unravel the effects of the presence of reinforcement and piezoelectricity in the composite structure and also to analyze the existence of irregularity and imperfectness at the common interface of composite structure in context of the present problem which serves as a salient feature of the present study.

  • Flow visualization is one of visualization techniques and it means a visual expression of vector data using 2D or 3D graphics. It aims for human to easily understand a special feature of the vector data. Flow visualization can be classified into various criterions such as visualization technique, data dimension, type of the flow, and so on. Visualization technique can be categorized into direct method, integration method and derived data based method. Data dimension can be divided into 2D, 2.5D and 3D. Type of flow data may be classified into steady and unsteady. In this paper, various LIC based flow visualization methods will be introduced which is one of representative integration based techniques. Those methods will be categorized with more detailed criterions such as dimension and type of flows.

  • Abnormal localization of tumor suppressor proteins is a common feature of renal cancer. Nuclear export of these tumor suppressor proteins is mediated by chromosome region maintenance-1 (CRM1). Here, we investigated the antitumor effects of a novel reversible inhibitor of CRM1 on renal cancer cells. We found that S109 inhibits the CRM1-mediated nuclear export of RanBP1 and reduces protein levels of CRM1. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of S109 on CRM1 is reversible. Our data demonstrated that S109 significantly inhibits proliferation and colony formation of renal cancer cells. Cell cycle assay showed that S109 induced G1-phase arrest, followed by the reduction of Cyclin D1 and increased expression of p53 and p21. We also found that S109 induces nuclear accumulation of tumor suppressor proteins, Foxo1 and p27. Most importantly, mutation of CRM1 at Cys528 position abolished the effects of S109. Taken together, our results indicate that CRM1 is a therapeutic target in renal cancer and the novel reversible CRM1 inhibitor S109 can act as a promising candidate for renal cancer therapy.

  • Metallothioneins are a class of small cysteine-rich proteins that have been associated with increased tolerance to metal and oxidative stresses in animals, plants, and fungi. We investigated a metallothionein-like (mt-like) gene shown previously to be upregulated in fruiting bodies of the fungus Agaricus bisporus in response to post-harvest storage. Analysis of an A. bisporus genomic DNA cosmid library identified two similar mt-like genes (met1 and met2) arranged as a bidirectional gene pair transcribed from the same promoter region. The promoter contained regulatory elements including 9 metal responsive elements and a CAAT box region 220 bp downstream of met1 that showed striking similarity to a feature in Coprinopsis cinerea mt-like gene promoters. Transcriptional analysis showed that both met genes are significantly and rapidly (within 3 hours) upregulated during post-harvest storage and expression is significantly greater in stipe and cap tissues compared with the gills. However, a strong directionality of the promoter was demonstrated, as transcript levels of met1 were at least two orders of magnitude greater than those of met2 in all samples tested.

  • Currently gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors are divided into three major categories: myogenic tumors(leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma), neurogenic tumors (schwannomas) and neoplasms that belong to neither group, which are known by GIST(gastrointestinal stromal tumors). The stromal tumors are hetrogenous, so that they may show myogenic or neurogenic differentiation or both, or no differentiation at all in some patients. The best defining feature for GIST is their expression of KIT-protein(CD117). Leiomyomas are the most common mesenchymal tumor in esophagus. Esophageal GISTS are very rare in comparision to those of the stomach and intestine. Recently we experieneced one case of the esophageal GIST, so that we describe an esophageal GIST on immunohistochemical analysis. A 70 years old woman complained of dysphagia and nausea for 3 days. FGS showed a huge elevated lesion in lower esophagus 33cm distal to incisor, which was covered with normal mucosa. CT and UGI showed the intramural tumor of lower third of the esophagus. The distal esophagectomy and esophago-gastrostomy were performed. The tumor was located in lower third of esophagus and measured as $6{\times}3.7$cm in size. Immunohistochemically, it showed weakly positive CD117 and diffusely positive S-100. SMA, desmin, NES and chromogranin showed negative immune-reaction. The patient was followed for 15 month after operation. There was no recurrence.

  • In this paper, we propose the development of Artificial Hippocampus Algorithm(AHA) which remodels a principle of brain of hippocampus. Hippocampus takes charge auto-associative memory and controlling functions of long-term or short-term memory strengthening. We organize auto-associative memory based 4 steps system (EC, DG CA3, and CA1) and improve speed of teaming by addition of modulator to long-term memory teaming. In hippocampus system, according to the 3 steps order, information applies statistical deviation on Dentate Gyrus region and is labeled to responsive pattern by adjustment of a good impression. In CA3 region, pattern is reorganized by auto-associative memory. In CA1 region, convergence of connection weight which is used long-term memory is learned fast a by neural network which is applied modulator. To measure performance of Artificial Hippocampus Algorithm, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and LDA(Linear Discriminants Analysis) are applied to face images which are classified by pose, expression and picture quality. Next, we calculate feature vectors and learn by AHA. Finally, we confirm cognitive rate. The results of experiments, we can compare a proposed method of other methods, and we can confirm that the proposed method is superior to the existing method.
