The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web-based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..
This study presents the result of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of a pharmacokinetic model which describes the distribution and removal of benzene at each organ when an indivisual inhales indoor contaminated air with benzene originated from groundwater. The pharmacokinetic model simulates the distribution of benzene deposited in organs of human body through inhalation of contaminated indoor air as well as degradation-metabolism in liver. This study focused on the uncertainty problem induced from the use of the single values for blood flow, partition coefficient, degradation constant, volume, etc. of each organ which was due to a lack of knowledge about these parameters or their measurements. To solve this problem, uncertainty analysis on the pharmacokinetic model was conducted simultaneously which would help understanding the risk assessment associated with VOCs.

Changes in tides and tidal currents in Chonsu Bay caused by the construction of Seosan A and B reclamation regions have been investigated using a depth-integrated two-dimensional tidal model. Three water level recorders were deployed for about one month and used for the specification of the open boundary condition. The computed currents were found to be in a good agreement with the measurements at two stations within Chonsu Bay. Comparison of the absolute velocities computed with the conditions before and after the embankment clearly shows that the reduction in tidal current amplitude is evident throughout the bay and the magnitude of the reduction increases to the north. Calculation shows that the embankment has advanced the time of drying at the northern part of the bay by about 51 minutes and has increased the exposure time by about 23 minutes. The high water time has advanced by about 1 hour, lowering the high water level by about 15 cm.

We developed a transformed, symmetrical, mushroom-like surface without via holes in cells focused on a 2.4-GHz WLAN band. Each slot in the novel type structure plays a key role in modeling at the desired frequencies. The designed artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) has several advantages, including a small size, a wider bandwidth, a short reflecting distance to the antenna, and easy fabrication because there are no via holes. Overall dimensions of the AMC cell are 21 mm $(Width){\times}21mm$$(Height){\times}2.6mm$ (Thickness), and the bandwidth is about three times wider (11.7%) compared to that of a conventional AMC (4.0%). For evaluating the performance of the proposed structure, a reflector, which periodically consists of the designed AMC cells, was developed. The antenna with the investigated AMC reflector not only works within a quarter of the wavelength because of the extremely high wave impedance generated by the AMC cells on the surface of the structure but also reduces the specific absorption rate (SAR). Electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure to a human phantom was analyzed by applying the designed reflector to the 2.4-GHz dipole antenna in a tablet PC. The calculated peak SAR averaged over 1 g was 0.125 W/kg when the input power was 1 W and the antenna was located at 20 cm from the human phantom. However, the SAR value was only 0.002 W/kg (i.e., 98.4% blocked) when the designed reflector was inserted in front of the antenna.
Mercury (Hg) is a global environmental pollutant that has been the cause of many public concerns. One particular concern about Hg in aquatic systems is its trophic transfer and biomagnification in food chains. For example, the Hg concentration increases with the increase of food chain level. Fish at the top of food chain can accumulate high concentrations of Hg (especially the toxic form, methylmercury, MeHg), which is then transferred to humans through seafood consumption. Various biological and physiochemical conditions can significantly affect the bioaccumulation of Hg-including both its inorganic (Hg(II)) and organic (MeHg) forms-in fish. There have been numerous measurements of Hg concentrations in marine and freshwater fish worldwide. Many of these studies have attempted to identify the processes leading to variations of Hg concentrations in fish species from different habitats. The development of a biokinetic model over the past decade has helped improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the bioaccumulation processes of Hg in aquatic animals. In this review, I will discuss how the biokinetic modeling approach can be used to reveal the interesting biodynamics of Hg in fish, such as the trophic transfer and exposure route of Hg(II) and MeHg, as well as growth enrichment (the increases in Hg concentration with fish size) and biomass dilution (the decreases in Hg concentration with increasing phytoplankton biomass). I will also discuss the relevance of studying the subcellular fates of Hg to predict the Hg bioaccessibility and detoxification in fish. Future challenges will be to understand the inter- and intra-species differences in Hg accumulation and the management/mitigation of Hg pollution in both marine and freshwater fish based on our knowledge of Hg biodynamics.

Background: Osteochondroma is a benign tumor that tends to develop in mandibular condyle and coronoid process in the craniofacial region. If tumor mass has grown from condyle into the infratemporal space with zygomatic arch obstructing the access, there are risks associated with surgical exposure and local resection of these masses. Case presentation: This study reports on a case of osteochondroma on mandibular condylar head where we treated with surgical excision via preauricular approach with 3D analysis. After the local resection, there were no surgical and post-operative complications until 8-month follow-up period. Conclusions: In local excision of osteochondroma, our method is a minimally invasive method. It is a good example of osteochondroma treatment.

Embedded sensors were used as an in-situcorrosion-sensing device for aircraft and vehicular structures protected by organic coatings. Results are presented changes associated with a standard Airforce aircraft coating and a standard Army vehicle coating were monitored by embedded sensors. These coatings consisted of a polyurethane topcoat and an epoxy primer, however are formulated to provide different characteristics. The ac-dc-ac testing method was used to accelerate the degradation of these coatings while being immersed in a NaCl medium. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise measurement experiments were used to monitor the induced changes. A comparison of the results between coatings subjected to the ac-dc-ac exposure and coatings subjected to only constant immersion in the NaCl medium is presented. The results were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ac-dc-ac method at accelerating the degradation of an organic coating without observably changing the normal mechanism of degradation. The data highlights the different features of the coating systems and tracks them while the coating is being degraded. The aircraft coating was characterized by a high-resistant topcoat that can mask corrosion/primer degradation at the primer/substrate interface whereas the vehicle coating was characterized by a low-resistant topcoat with an effective corrosion inhibiting primer. Details of the ac-dc-ac degradation were evaluated by using an equivalent circuit to help interpret the electrochemical impedance data.

A souce term model describes mathematically the source of radionuclides as they begin slow migration and decay in deep groundwater. Various source term models based on mass-transfer analysis and measurement-based source term models are reviewed. Ganerally, two processes are involved in leaching or dissolution: (1) chemical reactions and (2) mass transfer by diffusion. The chemical reaction controls the dissolution rates only during the early stage of exposure to groundwater. The exterior-field mass transfer may control the long term dissolution rates from the waste solid in a geologic repository. Mass-transfer analyses re3y on detailed and careful application of the governing equations that describe the mechanistic processes of transport of material between and within phases. If used correctly, source term models based on mass-transfer theory are valuable and necessary tools for developing reliable predictions.
In reality, masonry infill modifies the seismic response of reinforced concrete (r.c.) frame structures by increasing the overall rigidity of structure which results in: increasing of total seismic load value, decreasing of deformations and period of vibration, therefore masonry infill frame structures have larger capacity of absorbing and dissipating seismic energy. The aim of the paper is to explore and assess actual influence of masonry infill on seismic response of r.c. frame structures, to determine whether it's justified to disregard masonry infill influence and to determine appropriate way to consider infill influence by design. This was done by modeling different structures, bare frame structures as well as masonry infill frame structures, while varying masonry infill to r.c. frame stiffness ratio and seismic intensity. Further resistance envelope for those models were created and compared. Different structures analysis have shown that the seismic action on infilled r.c. frame structure is almost always twice as much as seismic action on the same structure with bare r.c. frames, regardless of the seismic intensity. Comparing different models resistance envelopes has shown that, in case of lower stiffness r.c. frame structure, masonry infill (both lower and higher stiffness) increased its lateral load capacity, in average, two times, but in case of higher stiffness r.c. frame structures, influence of masonry infill on lateral load capacity is insignificant. After all, it is to conclude that the optimal structure type depends on its exposure to seismic action and its masonry infill to r.c. frame stiffness ratio.
In this paper, we selected commuting scenarios in the most congested metropolitan area in Korea, and conducted noise analysis during personal air vehicle (PAV) operation using aviation environmental design tool (AEDT)software which was developed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Noise is the second important factor after safety in order to operate PAVs through concepts such as ODM (on-demand mobility) introduced by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Noise analysis were performed by modeling low-noise ePAVs as commercial helicopters and predicted residential suitability in order to resolve problems in which accurate NPD (noise power distance) data from PAVs were not released. The application of noise reduction technology such as electric propulsion has significantly reduced noise exposure levels and has reached the conclusion that commuting with PAVs is feasible without noise problems in the metropolitan area.
