Exposed dose of a patient was measured by Radiophotoluminescent Glass Rod Detector with a use of a panorama graphic device in dental examination. The effect of exposed dose in optic lens was measured by comparing the different materials of the glasses. Depending on the dental location, the exposed dose distribution was 82.4~2,340uSv. It showed that the maximum difference in dose distribution was over 300%. Thus, when manufacturing the devices, it seemed to require shortening the pre-heat time and additional shielding in order to control the diagnosis and exposed dose. The measurement data of the exposed dose in optic lens was increased 20~75uSv per each test when compared putting on glasses with not wearing. As a result, taking off the glasses is recommended to improve efficiency of the test and minimize the exposed dose during dental panorama graphic examinations.
For the purpose of evaluating the effect of noise induced hearing loss on the blood pressure, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 481 manufacturing industrial workers in Pusan area consisted of 275 workers from noisier plant (over 90 dB(A), high exposed group) and 206 workers from less noisy plant (below 85 dB(A), low exposed group) from April to Decepmber in 1985. The summarized results were as follows; 1) The degree of hearing loss according to the audible frequency was most notable in 4,000 Hz. 2) The prevalence of hypertension was 14.8% in total examined subjects. And also in 40 dB(A) hearing lost workers, there was no significant difference between high exposed group as 15.5% and low exposed group as 15.8%. 3) In 3 models analyzed by multiple regression technique to obtain the complexed extents of risk factors related to the diastolic blood pressure, especially model III which contain age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol and family history of hypertension, duration of work, noise exposure level and degree of hearing loss in high exposed group was most remarkable compared to the others. 4) The most potential predictor related to the diastolic pressure in high exposed group was the degree of hearing loss. And the next were body mass index, familial history of hypertension and age in order. But in the case of low exposed group, the potential predictors were body mass index, age and familial history of hypertension.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cause of discomfort come from wearing of soft contact lens(SCL) exposed to fundamental cosmetics, After SCLs were smeared with skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, they were exposed to artificial tear for 7 days, and then changes of the adhered protein amount, the transmission of visible light, the wettability and the base curve were estimated. The amount of protein adhered to SCLs were increased 3 times by being exposed to fundamental cosmetics. Moreover, the transmission of visible light of SCL exposed to both nutritional cream and artificial tear was 92.8%, which was 4.7% lower than SCL exposed only to artificial tear. By being exposed to skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, the contact angle of SCLs were increased up to $7.1^{\circ}$, $7.0^{\circ}$ or $5.7^{\circ}$ and the base curve of SCLs were decreased to 3.2%, 5.1% or 8.3%, respectively.
Objectives : This study was designed to compare the morphological changes in the nasal, tracheal and main bronchial mucosa in rats exposed to 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 ppm ozone for 7 days, 6 hours per day. Materials and Methods : We observed the nasal, tracheal and main bronchial mucosa in rats exposed to 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 ppm ozone for 7days, 6hours per day with LM, SEM and TEM. Results : In light microscopy, influx of inflammatory cells, epithelial hyperplasia, loss of cilia and increased goblet cells were observed in all rats except those exposed to 0.3 ppm. these findings increased with the increase of ozone concentration, but there were no significant differences among the nasal, tracheal and main bronchial mucosa in rats exposed to the same ozone concentration. In scanning electron microscopy, a loss of cilia was observed in rats exposed to 0.3 ppm in some sections and 0.6 ppm and 1.2 ppm in all sections. In transmission electron microscopy, vacuolization of epithelial cells was observed in rats exposed to 0.3 ppm in some sections and 0.6 ppm in all sections. These results suggest that electron microscopic observation is necessary to study morphology of airway mucosa in rats exposed to ozone below 0.3 ppm. And also the morphological changes in nasal septal epithelium may reflect those of tracheal and bronchial epithelium after high concentration ozone-exposure.

This study was conducted to find out the possibility of seeding of Zoysia japonica and woody plants for the revegetation of rock-exposed-cutslopes by Natural Topsoil Restoration Methods (NTRM). The 5cm thick layer of artificial soil was attached at rock-exposed cutslopes for the growth of Zoysia japonica and native woody plants by NTRM. The main results were summarized as follows. 1. Artificial soil attached at rock-exposed-slopes by NTRM was not eroded until recovered by Zoysia japonica and native woody plants. It shows extremely low soil erodibility. 2. One year later after seeding, woody plants show 100% ground coverage. But, in early stage, they grew more quickly at northwest slopes than at southeast slopes. 3. In seeding of Zoysia japonica, it grew more quickly at southeast slopes than at northwest slopes. Also, it grew better at lower part of the slopes than at middle part of the slopes. 4. After one year from seeding, the height of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Indigo/era pseudo-tinctoria were longer than any other plants. The next were Albizzia julibrissin, Lespedeza cuneata and wild flowers. The tree height of Rhus chinensis shows 28cm length, so it has enough possibility to be used for roadside revegetation works. 5. Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Indigo/era pseudo-tinctoria show different importance values according to slope aspect. But, they show tendency to outweigh the other plants at all slope-aspects. 6. Most of the plants seeded by NTRM were germinated well and they covered rock-exposed-slopes so quickly and effectively. Thus it leads to conclusion that the revegetation methods used in this experiment was a very effective methods to recover rock-exposed-slopes by seeding of zoysia japonica and native woody plants.
Background: The indiscriminate use of pesticides in Nigeria may have harmful effects on reproductive health of farmers. Objectives: This study assessed the awareness of reproductive health, serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, estradiol, progesterone and sperm characteristics of male farmers occupationally exposed to pesticides. Methods: Eighty four male farmers were recruited for the study. Structured questionnaire was used to obtain the socio-demographic data. Blood and semen samples were collected from the subjects in the morning for hormonal assays and semen analysis using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method and SQAV sperm quality analyzer. Data were analyzed using chi square, Student's-t-test, and Regression analysis. Results: Serum FSH (p<0.01), LH (p<0.005) and Estradiol (p<0.001) were significantly higher while prolactin (p<0.02) and testosterone (p<0.001) were significantly lower among pesticides exposed farmers than nonexposed subjects. Some 34/84 (40.5%) of the pesticides exposed farmers had serum testosterone levels below the lower limit of the reference range. Those with low testosterone levels (p<0.001), also had FSH (p<0.05), LH (p<0.001) and Estradiol (p<0.002) significantly lower than those with normal testosterone levels. The sperm count among pesticides exposed farmers; total motility and percentage morphology were significantly lower than non-pesticides exposed subjects. Some 14/84 (16.7%) of the pesticides exposed farmers had sperm count below 15 million/mL (oligozoospermia). More than 70% of the farmers were not aware of the reproductive health risks associated with pesticides and only 23.8% of the farmers were using protective devices. Conclusions: Deliberate efforts to improve awareness, knowledge, personal hygiene, and interventions necessary to lessen both pesticides exposure and health risks by adopting safe practices are suggested.
Shingal reservoir is a relatively small (211ha) and shallow impoundment, and approximately 25 ha of its sediment is exposed after spring drawdown. At least 14 vascular p13n1 species germinate on the exposed sediment, but Persimria vulgaris Webb et Moq. quickly dominates the vegetation. In order to estimate the role of the vegetation in the dynamics of heavy metal pollutants in the reservoir, Cu concentration of water, fallout particles, exposed sediment, and tissues of p. vulgaris, Ivas analyzed. Cu content in reservoir water decreased from $13.10mg/m^2$ on May 15 (before dralvdown) to $3.08mg/m^2$ in June 1 (after drawdown), mainly due to the loiwering of water level. Average atmospheric deposition of Cu by fallout particles was $10.84 {\mu}g/m^2/day$. Cu content in the surface 15cm of exposed sediment decreased from $5.094g1m^2$ right after drawdown, to $0.530g/m^2$ in 41 days, which is a 89.6% decrease. Therefore up to 99.7% of Cu in the reservoir appears to exist in the sediment. only 0.3% in water If the rate of atmospheric Input by fallout particles is assumed to have been the same since 1958, when the reservoir was completed, cumulative input of Cu during the 38 years would have been $150.35mg/m^2$, which is only 3.0% of Cu content in sediment right after drawdown. Therefore, most of Cu in the Shingal reservoir must have been transported by the Shingal-chun flowing into the reservoir, Standing crop of vegetation on the exposed sediment 41 days after drawdown was $730.67g/m^2$, of which 630.91g/m2 was p. vulgaris alone, and Cu content in P vulgaris at this time was $6.612mg/m^2$. This was only 0.13% of Cu in the exposed sediment, but was 50.5% of Cu in water before drawdown, or 167% of the average annual input of Cu by atmospheric deposition. If other plants were assumed to absorb Cu to the same concentration as p. vulgaris, total amount of Cu absorbed in 41 days by vegetation on the exposed sediment is estimated to be 1913.3 g, which is a considerable contribution to the purification of the reservoir water.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between famine exposure in early life and the risk of type 2 diabetes in adulthood during the 1959-1961 Chinese Famine. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 3,418 individuals aged 35-74 years free of diabetes from two studies in 2006 and 2009 were followed up prospectively in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Famine exposure was classified as unexposed (individuals born in 1962-1978), fetal exposed (individuals born in 1959-1961), child exposed (individuals born in 1949-1958), and adolescent/adult exposed (born in 1931-1948). A logistic regression model was used to assess the relationship between famine exposure and diabetes after adjustment for potential covariates. RESULTS: During a three-year follow-up, the age-adjusted incidence rates of type 2 diabetes were 5.7%, 14.5%, 12.7%, and 17.8% in unexposed, fetal-exposed, child-exposed, and adolescent/adult-exposed groups, respectively (P < 0.01). Relative to the unexposed group, the relative risks (95% confidence interval) for diabetes were 2.15 (1.29-3.60), 1.53 (0.93-2.51), and 1.65 (0.75-3.63) in the fetal-exposed, child-exposed, and adolescent/adult-exposed groups, after controlling for potential covariates. The interactions between famine exposure and obesity, education level, and family history of diabetes were not observed, except for the urbanization type. Individuals living in rural areas with fetal and childhood famine exposure were at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, with relative risks of 8.79 (1.82-42.54) and 2.33 (1.17-4.65), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that famine exposure in early life is an independent predictor of type 2 diabetes, particularly in women. Early identification and intervention may help prevent diabetes in later life.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of green tea on gene expression of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) in rat liver exposed to microwave. Sprague-Dawley male rats with 200$\pm$10g body weight were assigned to normal and microwave exposed groups : microwave exposed groups ; microwave exposed groups were divided two groups : microwave(MW) group which was administrated the distilled water and green tea(GT) group which was administrated the green tea extracts. The rats were irradiated with microwave at frequence of 2.45 GHz for 15 min and then the gene expression in the damaged tissue were investigated at 0.1, 3, 4,6 and 8 days after the microwave irradition to compared with the normal group. The level of SOD gene expression in MW group was lower than the normal group within 6 days but that of GT group as higher than MW group. These results may imply that green tea stimulates SOD expression and there by protecting tissues from free radicals. The GSH-Px gene was expressed a little bit lower than the normal group but that of GT group was expressed to higher lever than MW group from 4 days after irradiation. These results suggest that the administration of green tea extract may activate antioxidative gene expressions such as SOD and GSH-Px in rat and that may help to recover liver tissues from microwave damage by removing hazardous free radicals and oxidized by products from cells.
