  • The exposure levels of chromium and nickel for chromeplating workers were evaluated. Chromium and nickel concentrations in urine and serum from 82 exposed workers and 69 controls, who were not exposed occupationally to metals, were analyzed by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. Chromium concentrations in urine of exposed group and control were $3.49{\pm}1.83g/g$ of creatinine, $5.59{\pm}2.83g/g$ of creatinine, and in serum were $0.69{\pm}0.30g/l$, $2.31{\pm}1.16g/l$ respectively. There were significant difference of concentrations for chromium in urine and serum by group respectively. 2. Nickel concentrations in urine of exposed group and control were $0.92{\pm}0.23g/g$ of creatinine, $2.20{\pm}1.93g/g$ of creatinine, and serum concentrations were $0.52{\pm}0.34g/l$, $1.41{\pm}0.74g/l$ respectively. There were significant difference of concentrations for nickel in serum by groups statistically. 3. Chromium and nickel concentrations in urine and serum of exposed groups were not significant by workplaces(grinding, electroplants, packaging).

  • Subjective symptoms, counts of blood cells and liver function test were conducted on 198 male workers who were exposed to toluene in Kyungin area from September to November, 1986. According to the level of urinary hippuric acid concentration, the total sample was classified into the high exposure group ($concentration{\geqq}3g/1$) and the low exposure group(concentration<3g/1). The following findings were obtained by comparing the two group: 1) Contrary to the previous findings. the urinary hippuric acid concentration of toluene exposed workers showed bimodal distribution. It meant that the toluene exposed workers were mixed with the non-exposed or minimal exposed workers. 2) The high exposure group showed a lower level of leucocytes counts ($6,630{\pm}1,860{\mu}l$) than the low exposure group ($6,340{\pm}1,960/{\mu}l$). 3) The high exposure group showed a higher level of SGOT, SGPT and r-GTP than the low exposure group (p<0.05). 4) The high exposure group complained much more subjective symptoms (e. g. skin rash, loss of appetite, palpitation) than the low exposure group.

  • Reasonably accurate estimation of the exposed population to the distinct levels of noise is essential to the efficient management of urban environmental noise. This study proposes a method of calculating the number of exposed people to industrial noise by using GIS tool and noise mapping. The exposed population of noise based on estimation of the number of people that lived in each building in urban area is compared with the one based on density of population. This study suggests the five step method that consists of gathering the fundamental data, extracting the property from the digital map, noise mapping based on the three dimensional topography, estimating population that lives in each building, merging the various results with GIS tool, and estimating exposed population to industrial noise through analyzing the noise map with GIS tools.

  • Abscopal effect is a form of secondary immune response that occurs in ionizing radiation therapy, resulting in changes in the immune response through activation of immune cells such as macrophages and T lymphocytes. UVB causes DNA damage similar to ionizing radiation and causes similar intracellular reactions, so it is often used as an alternative in research on the effects of ionizing radiation. In a previous study, we found that pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, increased in Jurkat T cells exposed to TGs. In this study, we confirmed the effects of UVB irradiation on T lymphocytes exposed to TGs, similar to the effects of ionizing radiation. As a result, it was shown that the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IFN-γ in Jurkat T cells exposed to TGs increased by UVB irradiation. In addition, it was confirmed that the increase in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by UVB was caused by the activation of iNOS protein. This is very similar to the immune response that occurs when T lymphocytes are exposed to TGs. These results suggest that activation of iNOS protein is involved in the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by UVB irradiation in T lymphocytes exposed to TGs.

  • In order to monitor the histological and general profiles of lung after direct expose of p,p-DDE, 1, 5 and 10 mg/ml of p,p-DDE were sprayed to male ICR mouse, and seven days after exposure, changes of body weight, lung weight, clinical signs, histological profiles of lung and total WBC in blood were investigated with changes of total cell number and their differential count in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). In the present study, a significant and dosage-dependent decrease of body weight was detected in p,p-DDE exposed groups and body weight gains during observational periods (7 days) were also significantly and dosage-dependently decreased in p,p-DDE exposed groups compared to that of vehicle control group. In addition general depression signs were detected in all p,p-DDE exposed groups with dosage-dependent manners, and lung weights were also increased in p,p-DDE exposed groups. Congestion, hemorrhage and severe exudate were observed in the lung of p,p-DDE exposed groups with sarcomatous changes and these signs were also showed by dosage-dependent manners. In addition, foreign body pneumonia signs were observed in the lung of p,p-DDE exposed groups in histological levels. The percentage of ALSA (Area of luminal surface of alveoli) was also significantly and dosage-dependently decreased in p,p-DDE exposed groups and total blood WBC and BALF cell numbers were significantly and dosage-dependently increased in p,pDDE exposed groups compared to that of vehicle control group and increase percentage of neutrophil, eosinophil, and lymphocyte in BALF were monitored in p,p-DDE exposed groups compared to that of vehicle control group. In conclusion, severe allergic response and/or foreign body pneumonitic changes were induced by direct exposure of p,p-DDE containing beverage. So it is considered that strong and powerful regulation was need to control production of residence of environmental pollutant especially to p,p-DDE.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of exposure and removal of four different cryoprotectants (CPAs) on the ATP content of cumulus cell-enclosed (COs) and cumulus cell-denuded (DOs) immature porcine oocytes. The in vitro nuclear maturation of the COs, exposed to and removed from the CPAs was also assessed. Both COs and DOs were exposed to 1.5 M concentrations of each CPA (ethylene glycol (EG); propylene glycol (PG); dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO); and glycerol (G)) for durations of 5, 15, and 30 minutes at room temperature ($23.5{\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$), and immersed in physiological saline supplemented with 20% (v/v) fetal bovine serum for 5 minutes ($39^{\circ}C$) to remove each CPA. Before, during and after exposure to each CPA, the ATP content of both the COs and the DOs was measured. After removal from each CPA an aliquot of the COs was matured for 44${\pm}$2 h, and their nuclear maturation rates were measured up to the metaphase stage of the second meiotic division (the M-II stage). The maturation rates up to the M-II stage were not significantly different between all the groups that were exposed to each CPA for 5 minutes. For 15 and 30 minute exposures, the maturation rates of the COs exposed to PG, DMSO and EG were almost the same as those of the control groups; however, the rates of G group exposed for 15 and 30 minutes were significantly lower (p<0.05) than the control group. These groups were also found to have a decrease in the ATP content of COs and DOs during and after exposure for the same periods (p<0.05). In addition, although the ATP contents of the COs after exposure to EG for any period were the same as the controls, the ATP content of the DOs exposed to EG for any period were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of the controls. When the ATP content of the COs and DOs of each CPA were compared, the DOs exposed to PG were found to have a significantly greater level (p<0.05) than DOs exposed to G for any duration. In addition, the ATP content of DOs exposed to PG for 30 min and removal was also higher (p<0.05) than when exposed to DMSO for the same period. These findings indicate that PG may be a useful CPA for the cryopreservation of immature porcine oocytes.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of noise exposure and aging on changes in hearing threshold level and the relationship between age and noise. Materials: The author selected 274 male shipyard and assembly line workers as the noise exposed group and 582 males not exposed to noise as the general population group. Data were collected from five years of consecutive annual audiometric tests performed from 2008 to 2012. Results: In the general population and noise exposed groups, there was a reverse phenomenon that hearing threshold level for 2009 was lower than that of 2008, which seemed to be due to the learning effect, but from 2010 hearing threshold level increased. In the noise exposed group, the mean hearing threshold level in the left ear was significantly higher than that for right ear. In the general population group, the older was the age, the higher was the hearing threshold level, especially at 4000 Hz. In the general population and noise exposed groups, frequency, age group and noise exposure independently affected hearing threshold level, and there was no relationship between age and noise exposure. Over all frequencies, the change of hearing threshold level was larger in the noise exposed group than in the general population group. In the noise exposed group below thirty years old, the change at 4000 Hz was remarkable. Conclusions: Age and noise exposure seem to affect hearing threshold level independently and contribute to an additive effect on hearing threshold level.

  • Possibility whether lead ingestion can cause selective toxicity to central serotonergic nervous system in rats was tested. Three groups of wistar rats; 1)Control, 2) Low dose and 3) High dose groups, were prepared. In prenatally lead-exposed rats, until parturition from dams, rat pups were intoxicated via placenta of mother rats having received drinking water containing either 0%(control ), 0.05%(low dose) or 0.2%(high dose) of lead acetate respectively, In postnatally lead-exposed rats, right after parturition from dams rat pups received drinking water containing either 0% (control), 0.05%(low dose) or 0.2%(high dose) of lead acetate. At 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) activity and Na$\^$+//K$\^$+/-ATPase activity were measured in 4 areas of rat brain; Telencephalon, Diencephalon, Midbrain and Pons/Medulla. TPH activities were assayed by modified method of Beevers et al. (1983) using L-(5-$^3$H)-tryptophan as substrate. TPH activity was determined as a criterion of lead poisoning to central serotonergic nervous system and Na$\^$+//K$\^$+/-ATPase activity as a criterion of non specific lead poisoning to any kinds of tissues. Selective toxicity of lead poisoning to central serotonergic nervous system was evaluated by the changes of TPH activities without concomitant changes of Na$\^$+//K$\^$+/-ATPase activities. In prenatally lead-exposed rats. this selectivity was found in Telencephalon (2 weeks of age), Diencephalon/Midbrain (2 weeks of age), Midbrain (4 and 6 weeks of age), Pons/Medulla (2, 4 and 6 weeks of age) In rats exposed to low dose of lead and Pons/Medulla (2 weeks of age) to high dose of lead. In postnatal Iy lead-exposed rats, this selectivity was found in Telencephalon (8 weeks of age), Diencephalon(8 weeks of age), Pons/Medulla (6 and 8 weeks of age) in rats exposed to low dose of lead and Pons/Medulla (8 weeks of age) to high dose of lead. These results suggest that lead poisoning may exhibit selective toxicity to central serotonergic nervous system.

  • This study was performed to investigate what effect the taste and quality of drugs would have on the cold and heat mechanisms of human body. We administered Hwangryeunhaedok-tang composed of bitter-tasted, cold-qualified drugs and Gungangbuza-tang composed of spice-tasted. hot-qualified drugs, respectively to the mice 1 hr before exposure to heat stress or cold stress. Plasma corticosterone level of mice was measured. The results were as follows: 1. The elevated corticosterone level in the mice exposed to heat stress was significantly decreased after administration of Gungangbuza-tang but there was no decrease after administration of Hwangryeunhaedok-tang. 2. The elevated corticosterone level in the mice exposed to cold stress was significantly decreased after administration of Hwangryeunhaedok-tang but there was mild decrease after administration of Gungangbuza-tang. 3. When the doses, 3g/kg and 1g/kg were administerd to mice exposed to heat stress. both dose showed significant decrease of corticosterone level and the dose. 3g/kg was more effective. However, in the mice exposed to cold stress, the dose, 3g/kg showed mild decrease and 1g/kg showed significant decrease. These data suggested that HW decreased the plasma corticosterone level in the mice exposed to cold stress and GB also decreased the plasma corticosterone level in the mice exposed to heat stress. In conclusion, our study revealed that the taste and quality of drugs controled the cold and heat mechanism of human body.

  • This study aims at investigating the relationships between the urinary mercury concentration and blood zinc-protoportphyrin, serum cholinestrase activity, making 149 workers exposed to mercury vapor and 68 workers who were not exposed to mercury among the workers in a flurorescent lamp manufactureing factory an object of this investigation. The results are as follows ; 1. In an exposed group the number of those whose urinary mercury concentration showed over $100{\mu}g/l$ was 21 persons (14.3%) among 147 workers. The average urinary mercury concentration was $52.1{\pm}46.1{\mu}g/l$($1.8-361.2{\mu}g/l$), which proved to be higher than the average concentration in a control group. 2. In an exposed group, the average concentration of blood zinc-protoporphyrin was $27.8{\pm}12.5{\mu}g/dl$($12.2-101.5{\mu}g/dl$), which proved to be somewhat higher than the average concentration in a control group. But it did not show a significant difference. 3. In an exposed group, the average concentration of serum cholinesterase activity showed $1936.7{\pm}341.0IU/l$(1,120,0-2,8750IU/l), which proved to be lower than the average concentration in a control group. 4. The relational coefficient between urinary mercury concentration and blool zinc-protoporphyrin, serum cholinesterase activity of the whole workers exposed to mercury showed little difference. While the relational coefficient between the urinary mercury concentration and blood zinc-protoporphyrin of the workers whose urinary mercury concentration showed over $100{\mu}g/l$ was relatively high, which was 0.62.
