  • This study introduces the calculation model of ionization composition and electrical conductivity for metallic plasma for practical application to modeling and simulation of modern electrical detonators. The present model includes the correction for non-ideality of dense plasma conditions which are expected in electrical explosion of bridge in detonators. The computational results for copper plasma show favorable agreement with experimental data for a wide range of plasma temperature and high density conditions and the model is proper for detonator modeling with good prediction accuracy.

  • Currently, in KS C IEC 60079-10-1, the leakage hole radius of secondary leakage is expressed as a recommendation. Underestimation of leak hole size can lead to underestimation of the calculated values for leak rates, and conservative calculations of leak hole sizes, which are considered for safety reasons, can be overestimated, resulting in an overestimated risk range. This too should be avoided. Therefore, a careful and balanced approach is necessary when estimating the size of leaking holes.Based on this logic, this study examines the stability by grasping the concentration inside the gas box when leaking dangerous substances as a result of experiments based on SEMI S6, an international safety standard applied in the semiconductor industry and The scope of explosion hazardous area was determined by applying the formula of KS C IEC 60079-10-1 according to SEMI F15 leak rate criteria and SEMI S6 leak rate criteria. Based on this, we will examine whether the exhaust performance needs to be improved as an alternative to FAB facilities that are difficult to apply to explosion hazards such as semiconductor industry.

  • For a methanol separation column of the BPA (Bisphenol A) plant, HAZOP (hazard and operability) assessment was performed and damage ranges were predicted from the accident scenarios for the fire and the explosion. As a result, the damage range of the jet fire was 20 m in the case of rupture of the discharge pipe (50 mm diameter) of safety valve, and that of the flash fire was 267 m in the case of catastrophic rupture. Also, the damage ranges of the unconfined vapor cloud explosion (UVCE) for the rupture of the discharge pipe and for the catastrophic rupture were 22 m and 542 m, respectively. For the worst case of release scenarios, safety measures were suggested as follows: the pressure instruments, which can detect abnormal rise of the internal pressure in the methanol separation column, should be installed by the 2 out of 3 voting method in the top section of the column. Through the detection, the instruments should simultaneously shut down the control and the emergency shut-off valves.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the physicochemical properties of steam exploded wood chips for peat moss substitute in vegetation media. Also, the mixtures at the different ratios of peat moss and pretreated wood chips (90 : 10, 70 : 30 and 50 : 50 (w/w), respectively) were evaluated by physicochemical and plant growth characteristics. The pretreated wood chips was showed that bulk density, porosity and pH were $0.26g/cm^3$, 93.3% and 5.7, respectively. This result indicates that physicochemical properties was improved when wood chips was apply to steam explosion in the range of optimum physicochemical condition for vegetation media. In particular, the mixture ratio of peat moss and pretreated wood chips to 70 : 30 (w/w) showed higher seed germination, plant height and leaf growth than peat moss. Also, the bulk density, porosity, water holding capacity, pH and C/N ratio were $0.20g/cm^3$, 91.8%, 76.1%, 5.2 and 51.0 in the range of optimum physicochemical condition for vegetation media.

  • Successful development of weapon systems requires a stringent verification and validation (V&V) process due to the nature of the weapons in which continual increase of operational capability makes the system requirements more complicated to meet. Thus, test and evaluation (T&E) of weapon systems is becoming more difficult. In such a situation, live fire tests appear to be effective and useful methods in not only carrying out V&V of the weapon systems under development, but also increasing the maturity of the end users operability of the system. However, during the process for live fire tests, a variety of accidents or mishaps can happen due to explosion, pyro, separation, and so on. As such, appropriate means to mitigate mishap possibilities should be provided and applied during the live fire tests. To study a way of how to accomplish it is the objective of this paper. To do so, top-level sources of hazard are first identified. A framework for T&E is also described. Then, to enhance the test range safety, it is discussed how test scenarios can be generated. The proposed method is based on the use of the anticipatory failure determination (AFD) and multiple event tree analysis (ETA) in analyzing range safety. It is intended to identify unexpected hazard components even in the environment with constraints. It is therefore expected to reduce accident possibilities as an alternative to the traditional root-cause analysis.

  • A active magnetic sensor has been widely used in the underwater guided weapon system because it is able to detect a target accurately in close range, but the target doesn't have any good countermeasure to overcome the threat from the active magnetic sensor. Recently, in order to increase the damage area of target by shock wave with explosion of the underwater weapon system and to detect small target, the maximum target detection range of the active magnetic sensor needs to be increased. One method for improving maximum target detection range is to improve output power from transmitter through demagnetization factor minimization of a transmitting core. Thus, in this paper, we describe the study results on the transmitter core shape design to enhance output power of the active magnetic sensor.

  • Hydrogen is a fuel of fuel cell system, which has powerful explosion possibility. Hence, the fuel cell system needs safety evaluation to prevent risk of hydrogen leakage. We use a actual size chamber of a common fuel cell module to analyze hydrogen. Hydrogen injection holes are located in lower part of the chamber in order to simulated hydrogen leakage. The hydrogen sensor can detect range of 0${\sim}$4%. Since the hydrogen gas, of which leaked amount is controled by MFC, are injected at the bottom holes, the transient sensor signals are measured. At a condition of 10cc/s of hydrogen leakage, the sensor detects hydrogen leakage after 22sec and there is also several seconds of time delay depending on the position of the sensor. This experimental data can be applied for the design of the hydrogen detection system and ventilation system of a residential fuel cell system.

  • We describe our ongoing project, Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies. This survey is designed to study transients such as Supernovae (SNe) in nearby galaxies. Our targets are UV-bright (MUV < -18.4) and nearby (d < 50 Mpc) 50 galaxies selected from a GALEX catalog, whose star formation rates are larger than normal galaxies. High star formation in these galaxies ensures that core-collapse supernova explosions occur more frequently in them than normal galaxies. By monitoring them with a short cadence of a few hours, we expect to discover 5 SNe/yr events. Most importantly, we hope to construct very early light curves in rising phase for some of them, which enables us to understand better the physical properties of progenitor star and the explosion mechanism. To enable such a high cadence observation, we constructed a world wide telescope network covering northern, southern hemisphere distributed over a wide range of longitudes (Korea, US, Australia, Uzbekistan and Spain). Data reduction pipe line, detection and classification algorithms are being developed for an efficient processing of the data. Using the network of telescopes, we expect to reach observe not only SNe but also other transients like GRBs, Asteroid, variable AGNs and gravitaional wave optical counter part.

  • Pre-monsoon dynamics of zooplankton community were investigated in the downstream of the Gagok stream flowing into the East Sea of Korea. Monthly sampling was carried out to collect zooplankters at five sites in the stream during the period between April and July 2014. Dissolved oxygen contents exceeded $7.0mg\;L^{-1}$ all the time. Water temperature was in a range of 15.7 to $24.9^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.4 to 8.8, respectively. A total of 75 taxa consisted of 36 species of rotifers, 16 species of cladocerans, 16 species of copepods, four kinds of aquatic insects, two kinds of decapods and one nematod was occurred. One species of marine copepod and one cladoceran, and one species of brackish rotifer and one copepod distributed at the station located in the stream mouth. Zooplankton abundance showed to vary from 42 to 4202 individuals $m^{-3}$ due to the explosion of aquatic insects and Alona sp. at site 2 located in the downstream in April. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period seems to decrease the zooplankton abundance caused by diffusion and drifting to the sea. Species diversity indices were generally high between 1.2~2.3 and were recorded to be high at the downstream throughout the study period. With the zooplankton dynamics, the influence of the input of sea waters into the stream seemed to be confined to some hundred meters of the stream mouth facing the East Sea.

  • The silver nanofluids were synthesized by the pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method in a liquid-gas mixture. The size and microstructure of nanoparticles in the deionized water were investigated by a particle size analyzer (PSA), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, the synthesized nanofluids were investigated in order to assess the stability of dispersion of nanofluid by the zetapotential analyzer and dispersion stability analyzer. The results showed that the spherical silver nanoparticle formed in the deionized water and mean particle size was about 50 nm. Also, when explosion times were in the range of 20$\sim$200 times, the absolute value of zeta potential was less than -27 mV and the dispersion stability characteristic of low concentration silver nanofluid was better than the high concentration silver nanofluid by turbiscan.
