  • Purpose - This paper assesses the trade potential and efficiency of Korea and China in the aquatic products trade. Trade efficiency and potential are the main factors that affect the growth of a country's trade. In this study, a time-varying stochastic frontier trade gravity model was constructed to analyze the trade potential and efficiency between Korea and China. By integrating the results of trade theory and empirical analysis, measures and suggestions were proposed to encourage the release of trade potential of fish exports between Korea and China. Design/methodology - In this paper, GDP per capita instead of economic size was chosen as an explanatory variable, and population size and relative distance were selected as explanatory variables to measure trade potential. For trade non-efficiency terms, regional organizations, political factors, and economic factors were mainly considered, and variables such as free trade agreements, political stability, regulatory quality, government efficiency, currency freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, and trade freedom were selected. Panel data for South Korea and 14 aquatic products trading partners (including China) from 2002 to 2020 were used in the empirical analysis. Findings - In the past 19 years, South Korea's export trade potential of aquatic products to China has never been lower than 70%. It was above 90% from 2006 to 2018, and has been at a high level for a long time. This shows that China's aquatic product market has large potential for development. Originality/value - This study examines the effectiveness and potential of South Korea's exports of aquatic items to China in a methodical and comprehensive empirical manner. The evaluation of the export trade potential of South Korea's aquatic goods to China is more precise when the effects of regional organization, political, and economic variables are taken into account in the trade non-efficiency term of the stochastic frontier gravity model. At the same time, we propose to increase the scale of South Korea's aquatic products trade from the perspective of China's demand. This issue of trade studies is underexplored both empirically and in theory, although the issue has long been important to Korean and world trade.

  • The cost of medical treatment for motor vehicle accidents is increasing every year. In this study, we created a model to predict long-term hospitalization(more than 18 days) among minor patients, which is the main item of increasing traffic accident medical expenses, using five algorithms such as decision tree, and analyzed the factors affecting long-term hospitalization. As a result, the accuracy of the prediction models ranged from 91.377 to 91.451, and there was no significant difference between each model, but the random forest and XGBoost models had the highest accuracy of 91.451. There were significant differences between models in the importance of explanatory variables, such as hospital location, name of disease, and type of hospital, between the long-stay and non-long-stay groups. Model validation was tested by comparing the average accuracy of each model cross-validated(10 times) on the training data with the accuracy of the validation data. To test of the explanatory variables, the chi-square test was used for categorical variables.

  • This study examines correlations between affective variables and English learners' achievement in native teachers' classes. Specifically, it aims to study the relationships among Korean college students' English learning motivation, anxiety, WTC (willingness to communicate) and their English achievement scores. For the purpose, the questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the students' English scores were analyzed and compared. The participants were 216 university students taking the general English courses as a requirement for graduation. The results indicated that although the students had high level motivation to learn English, especially for social reasons, their WTC in and outside the classroom was low. Also, unlike the previous studies on foreign language anxiety, their anxiety level was not significant. Anxiety and motivation were negatively correlated; WTC and motivation were positively correlated. However, according to the regression analysis, the explanatory power of the three affective variables was not significant for the students' achievement scores. Several possible reasons and some pedagogical implications are provided in the conclusion.

  • The ozone concentration is one of the important environmental issue for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. In this article, two time series ARE models, the direct ARE model and applied ARE model have been considered for analyzing the ozone data at southern part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Pyeongtaek, Osan and Suwon monitoring sites in Korea. The result shows that the direct ARE model is better suited for describing the ozone concentration in all three sites. In both of the ARE models, eight meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the explanatory variables. Also the high level of ozone data (over 80 ppb) have been analyzed at the Pyeongtaek, Osan and Suwon monitoring sites.

  • Purpose - There has been little research on the variables influencing studio apartment values. This study aims to identify variables affecting the value of studio apartments in Seoul by empirically examining the interaction between sale prices and characteristics studio apartment characteristics. Research design, data, and methodology - We have analyzed data pertaining to 142 studio apartments in September 2010. A regression analysis model is constructed to test the significance of the variables in relation to the studio apartment sale prices per m2 in Seoul. Results - The age of the building is comparatively more significant than land use as the explanatory variable. Land price is the key variable affecting studio apartment sale prices and investors are willing to pay high implicit sale prices for locations that are associated with high land prices. Conclusions - The age of buildings explains a significant portion of the variability of the sale prices of studio apartment. Higher land prices result in higher sale prices for studio apartments. The older the buildings, the lower the sale prices of the studio apartments.

  • This study explores the relationship between attitudes toward abortion and such variables as age, education, religion, working, family income, son preference, and abortion experience. Questions are asked to see whether or not respondents think it should be possible to obtain legal abortion in nine circumcestances. Logit analysis is executed to see the relationship between abortion attitudes and explanatory variables for all respondents and then for women with abortion experience and for those without. Women with abortion experience are more likely to favor abortion than those without the experience. Catholics show tendency to oppose to legalized abortion compared to women with no religion. Women who show higher son preference are more likely to oppose to abortion in case of pregnancy by rape. Women who are working then to show favorable attitudes toward abortion in case of women who want no more child. Women who have low income and abortion experience have than young women. The more educated women show the more favorable attitudes toward abortion.

  • In many real-world data, multiple response variables are often dependent on the same set of explanatory variables. In particular, if several response variables are correlated with each other, simultaneous estimation considering the correlation between response variables might be more effective way than individual analysis by each response variable. In this multivariate regression analysis, least distance estimator (LDE) can estimate the regression coefficients simultaneously to minimize the distance between each training data and the estimates in a multidimensional Euclidean space. It provides a robustness for the outliers as well. In this paper, we examine the least distance estimation method in multivariate linear regression analysis, and furthermore, we present the penalized least distance estimator (PLDE) for efficient variable selection. The LDE technique applied with the adaptive group LASSO penalty term (AGLDE) is proposed in this study which can reflect the correlation between response variables in the model and can efficiently select variables according to the importance of explanatory variables. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed through simulations and real data analysis.

  • This study examined the influence of humanistic knowledge and occupational stress on the professional quality of life of clinical nurses. The data from 217 survey questionnaires collected from three general hospitals located in a metropolitan area from Jun 3 to 14, 2019 were used. The data were analyzed using a t-test, ANOVA, Scheffè test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression with SPSS Statistics 23.0 program. The findings revealed a positive correlation between compassion satisfaction and humanistic knowledge and a negative correlation with Burnout. Burnout had a negative correlation with humanistic knowledge and a positive correlation with occupational stress and secondary traumatic stress. Secondary traumatic stress showed a positive correlation with occupational stress. Burnout, satisfaction for nursing, and working period were significant variables of the compassion satisfaction with an explanatory power of 48.5%. Compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, satisfaction for nursing, marriage, and occupational stress were significant variables of burnout with an explanatory power of 68.8%. Burnout and income were significant variables of secondary traumatic stress with an explanatory power of 21.9%. Burnout was found to be a significant variable of not only compassion satisfaction, but also compassion satisfaction. Therefore, efforts are needed to make efforts to prevent burnout.

  • This study was conducted to investigate individuals' mental health on the basis of scores for depression and self-esteem from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KWPS) and determine their dynamic association with employment status. This study was conducted using the eighth (2013) and ninth (2014) data from the KWPS. To identify factors affecting depression, socio-demographic factors, factors related to mental health, and contents related to employment, such as changes in the employment condition and employment status, were selected and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchial multiple regression to determine the explanatory power. Multiple regression revealed that in Model 1, those who were female, were older, had no spouse, were in the lower income bracket, had lower total self-esteem, and scored higher for depression in the previous period tended to show higher levels of depression. Education had no significant effect and explanatory power for all variables inputted into this model was estimated to be 30.8% (p<0.001). The explanatory power for all variables input into Model 2, which was generated by inputting employment status into Model 1, was estimated to be 30.9%, which was 0.1% higher than for Model 1 (p<0.05). These results indicated that depression was significantly correlated with gender, age, income, presence of a spouse, previous depression, self-esteem, and employment status; accordingly, investigation of the factors that can narrow the gap among variables affecting depression should be conducted and socially supported.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relative importance of three factor -socioeconomic development, public health development, egalitarian nature of socioeconomic development- affecting mortality declines. Infant mortality rate and life expectancy at birth are used as the mortality index, that is the dependent variables, while GNP is used as the indicator of socioeconomic development, primary school enrollment ratio of female as the indicator of egalitarian nature of socioeconomic development, population per hospital bed as the indicator of public health. The data of these variables are collected two time-periods -before 1970 and during 1970-1980- over 50 countries. The explanatory data analysis is used as the statistical technique. We can find whether the relationship between dependent variable and independent variables are linear or nonlinear, and which case is the influential case in our model. The main results of this study are followings. First, the association between infant mortality rates and four indices are not linear. The most important factor explaining the variation of infant mortality is GNP, while primary enrollment of female is the second and GINI is the third important factor. However, population per hospital bed does not have a significant effect on the infant mortality rates in this study. Second, life expectancy at birth is log-linearly related to GNP. Unlike infant mortality rates, the most important factor explaining the variation of life expectance at birth is women's education and the next important factor GNP, and then the third one GINI. But, still population per hospital bed is not significantly related to the variation of life expectance in this study.
