  • An efficient numerical model of the modified mild slope equation, based on the robust iterative method is presented. The model developed is verified against other numerical experimental results, related to wave reflection from an arc-shaped bar and wave transformation over a circular shoal. The results show that the modified mild slope equation model is capable of producing accurate results for wave propagation in a region where water depth varies substantially, while the conventional mild slope equation model yeilds large errors, as the mild slope assumption is violated.

  • A regional master recession curve model to predict groundwater discharges in a given basin was presented. Considering a stream-aquifer system, both theoretical and experimental baseflow equations were compared and a practical groundwater discharge equation was derived, The groundwater discharge equation was expanded and transformed to the discharge equation at the basin exit. For practical use, the equation was expressed as a function of watershed area, the mean slope of basin and the recession constant. To verify the model, the model was applied to Ssang-chi basin where long-term and temporal hydrological data at the upper basin were collected. Our results show that a master recession curve of unmeasured area can be predicted.

  • This study deals with literature review, developing a predicting equation for the ultimate stress of prestressing (PS) CFRP, and experimental test with the parameters affecting the ultimate stress of prestressing CFRF in prestressed concrete beams strengthened by external prestressing. The ACI (American Concrete Institute) predicting equation for the ultimate stress of unbonded prestressing CFRP is analyzed to develop a new integrated predicting equation. The proposed predicting equation takes rationally the effect of internal PS steel into consideration as a function of prestressing tendon depth to neutral depth ratio. In the experimental study, prestressed concrete beams strengthened using external prestressing CFRP are tested with the test parameters having a large effect on the ultimate stress of prestressing CFRP. The test parameters includes infernal prestressing steel and external prestressing CFRP tendon reinforcement ratios, and span to depth ratio. The test results are analyzed to confirm the rationality and applicability of the proposed equation for predicting the ultimate stress of external prestressing CFRP.

  • Subsea power cables are subjected to various external loads induced by environmental and mechanical factors during manufacturing, shipping, and installation. Therefore, the prediction of the structural strength is essential. In this study, experimental and theoretical analyses were performed to investigate the axial stiffness of subsea power cables. A uniaxial tensile test of a 6.5 m three-core AC inter-array subsea power cable was carried out using a 10 MN hydraulic actuator. In addition, the resultant force was measured as a function of displacement. The theoretical model proposed by Witz and Tan (1992) was used to numerically predict the axial stiffness of the specimen. The Newton-Raphson method was employed to solve the governing equation in the theoretical analysis. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results for axial stiffness revealed satisfactory agreement. In addition, the predicted axial stiffness was linear notwithstanding the nonlinear geometry of the subsea power cable or the nonlinearity of the governing equation. The feasibility of both experimental and theoretical framework for predicting the axial stiffness of subsea power cables was validated. Nevertheless, the need for further numerical study using the finite element method to validate the framework is acknowledged.

  • This paper proposed a new design equation for the inelastic lateral torsional buckling (LTB) of singly symmetric stepped I-beams with non-compact flange sections. The proposed equation was generated using a finite element program, ABAQUS, and a statistical program, MINITAB. The parameters used were the stepped beams parameters; ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, and ${\gamma}$ and the length-to-height ratio ($L_b/h$) of the beam. The proposed equation was further validated by means of experimental test, where beams were subjected to four-point bending and supported by roller and lateral braces near the end supports. In addition, finite element models were simulated using the same parameters used in the experimental test to verify the results of the test conducted. It was proved that LTB capacity calculated from the proposed equation is accurate and conservative in comparison with the yielded values from the FEM and actual test, making it a reliable and safe approach in calculating the buckling capacities of singly symmetric stepped beams with non-compact flange sections.

  • The extensive use of external prestressing system with PSC-I beam to strengthen reinforced and prestressed concrete members requires the full understanding of the behavior of the strengthened members. The main approach of this research was to experimentally investigate the flexural performance of the PSC-I beam considering external tendon and an equation was developed which indicated the produced incremental stress in the tendon due to applied load. Further, this equation was verified through performing static loading tests on two experimental specimens considering the presence or absence of external tendon. The test results revealed that, the flexural performance enhanced due to the use of external tendon. Moreover, the magnitude of the estimated flexural strength using proposed stress increasing equation almost coincides with the experimental test results. However, it was the evident of the improvement of the flexural performance of the system by reinforcing with the external tendon and also proved that the proposed equation was valid and effective.

  • In recent years, the reversed L-shaped perforated shear connector has been developed to mitigate the problem associated with headed stud and Perforbond shear connector and to simulate the simultaneous failure of concrete and shear connector. And FRP perforated shear connector has been applied to composite concrete and FRP module in the FRP-concrete composite bridge deck. The design criterion of the reversed L-shaped and FRP perforated shear connector has not been established yet since the lack of experimental and analytical study results. In this paper, the existing design equations for the Perforated were briefly discussed and the equation fur the prediction of shear resisting capacity of the reversed L-shaped and FRP perforated shear connector was suggested based on the experimental test, FEM analysis. and the existing equation for the Perfobond. The predict results obtained by the suggested equation arc compared with the experimental results, the applicability and effectiveness of suggested equation was verified.

  • In the previous study in relation to the current study, a test program for the verification of the proposed design equation was carried with fourteen prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendons. Experimental results were compared with the computed results by the proposed design equations. The previous design equations are ACI code, AASHTO LRFD code, the analysis equation with the strain compatibility, Harajli/Kanj' design equation, Chakrabarti' design equation. As a result of comparative studies, it turned out that the proposed design equation could predict the ultimate tendon stress with comparatively high accuracy.

  • The equation of the particle collection efficiency proposed by Deutsch has been modified through the various experiments to correct the errors caused by the assumptions made for the equation. In order to get an modified Deutsch equation that can be applied to real conditions, a pilot scale electrostatic precipitator is used. The effects of operational variables on the particle collection efficiency are evaluated. Particle resistivity, gas temperature, moisture contents in gas, gas velocity and particle concentration are used as the operational variables. Two different types of coal fly-ash obtained from the fluidized bed combustor and the pulverized coal combustor are used as test particulate to evaluate the effect of the physiochemical and electrical characteristics of the particle on the particle collection efficiency. The experimental results are fitted with the modified Deutsch equation made by Matts-Ohnfeldt and the extended Deutsch equation made by E. C. Potter to evaluate the effect of the particle characteristics and the operation conditions on the particle collection efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator.
