  • For multi-stage deep drawing process including ironing operation and biaxial forming in this study, tool developments are achieved, and the developed tool sets are applied to experimental investigations. In process and tool designs, a contact condition between intermediate blank and lower die is considered as the sequential one. In this study, the material used is cold-rolled thin sheet (SPCE) with the initial thickness of 0.4mm. From the experimental approaches, several failures such as tearing, localized thickening and thinning, are observed. To solve these failures, the contact surface on the lower die is modified. As the experimental results by applying the modified lower die, it is investigated that the failures are not occurred, and the excessive deformation behavior due to the thinning and thickening effects are decreased. Furthermore, the thickness distributions on the major axis and the minor axis of each intermediate blank are investigated to be already satisfied the target (ironing) thickness, respectively. By this systematic approach, it is confirmed that the experimental results show good agreements with the designed and required configuration of each deformed and final products.

  • This study touched on the effect of the different electronic course designs on the programming skills of university students. The researcher used the experimental research design of a quasi-experimental of two experimental groups to achieve the objectives of the study. The first group underwent an electronic course designed in the holistic pattern, and the second group was taught a course in a sequential pattern. This experimental design was intended to measure the impact of these two learning modes on the learners' cognitive and performance achievement of programming skills. An achievement test and observational form were the data collection tools. Data were analyzed statistically using Pearson correlation, Mann Whitney Test, and Alpha Cronbach. The findings revealed statistically- significant differences between the mean scores of the students of the first and second experimental groups in favor of the former concerning the observational form and the latter in the cognitive test. Based on the findings, some recommendations are suggested. Due to their effectiveness in the educational process, expanding using the e-courses at universities is vital. The university teachers are highly recommended to design e-courses and provide technical and material support to the e-courses user to fulfill their design purpose.

  • This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the effect of drilling fluid with different mix designs for bore hole collapse prevention. The bore hole collapse prevention mechanism for the bentonite based drilling fluid was first discussed together with the effect of conditioning with different additives on engineering characteristics of bentonite based drilling fluid. Reduced-scale model tests were then carried out considering field procedures for cases with a decomposed granitic soil with 20% fines and a sand with various drilling fluids with different mix designs. The results indicated that the addition of polymer to the bentonite based drilling fluid decreases the amount of drilling fluid injected, the drilling fluid infiltration thickness and increases the final depth of excavation. Also revealed is that the effect of polymer on the performance of drilling fluid is more pronounced in the decomposed granite soil with 20% fines than the sand. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • This study analyzed the pressure, subjective wearing comfort, and design preference of brassiere shoulder straps among women in their 20s and 40s. Experimental clothing was made by different shoulder strap designs on a brassiere. In the four designs (A-D), the front attachment points of the shoulder straps were the same, but the back attachment points were different. Three of them (E, E1, E2) were of a halter neck design, with different front attachment positions. The pressures of A-D were measured at the position passing through the shoulder line (P1), and E-E2 was measured at the back neck (P2) as well as at P1. Subjective wearing comfort and design preference were rated on a 7-point Likert scale. A was determined to exert the highest pressure at the neck side of the design in the pressure measurement analysis of A-E2, whereas E1 exerted the lowest. E was measured to have the highest pressure among the E-E2 designs, whereas E2 had the lowest. Participants preferred A the most and E the least in regards to the subjective wearing comfort of A-E. Thus, participants deem A to be the most comfortable despite the high strap pressure. However, E was the most favored design, despite its poor wearing comfort. Participants' subjective impressions of E-E2 were that E2 was the most uncomfortable, but its design was the most preferred. Consumers' design preferences and subjective impressions of wearing comfort did not match.

  • This study applies various surface patterns to minimize material loss in construction equipment that is subject to severe wear due to sand, such as the wear-resistant steel plates of dump trucks or the teeth of excavators. The relationship between surface morphology and wear behavior is investigated using PLA+ polymer to observe the effect of the surface pattern. Five types of samples - smooth, concave, convex, wavy concave, and wavy convex designs - are created using a 3D printer. A wear experiment is conducted for a duration of 3 h using 6.5 kg of abrasive particles. The mass loss of the samples after the experiment is measured to assess the extent of wear. Additionally, the surface morphology of the samples before and after the experiment is analyzed using SEM and confocal microscopy. The study results reveal that the smooth design exhibits the highest wear loss, whereas the concave and wavy concave designs show relatively lower wear loss. The convex and wavy convex designs exhibit varying contact areas with the abrasive particles depending on the surface pattern, resulting in different levels of wear. Furthermore, a comparison between the experimental results and DEM simulations confirms the observed wear trends. This study reveals the relationship between wear damage according to surface pattern shape and is expected to be of substantial help in the analysis of wear and tear on agricultural and heavy equipment.

  • Functional brain imaging techniques have been used to diagnose psychiatric disorders such as dementia, depression, and autism. Recently, these techniques have also been actively used to study hearing loss. The present study reviewed the application of the functional brain imaging techniques in auditory research, especially those focusing on hearing loss, over the past decade. EEG, fMRI, fNIRS, MEG, and PET have been utilized in auditory research, and the number of research studies using these techniques has been increasing. In particular, fMRI and EEG were the most frequently used technique in auditory research. EEG studies mostly used event-related designs to analyze the direct relationship between stimulus and the related response, and in fMRI studies, resting-state functional connectivity and block designs were utilized to analyze alterations in brain functionality in hearing-related areas. In terms of age, while studies involving children mainly focused on congenital and pre- and post-lingual hearing loss to analyze developmental characteristics with and without hearing loss, those involving adults focused on age-related hearing loss to investigate changes in the characteristics of the brain based on the presence of hearing loss and the use of a hearing device. Overall, ranging from EEG to PET, various functional brain imaging techniques have been used in auditory research, but it is difficult to perform a comprehensive analysis due to the lack of consistency in experimental designs, analysis methods, and participant characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to develop standardized research protocols to obtain high-quality clinical and research evidence.

  • To reduce the storage space of spent fuels used at the atomic power plants all over the world, the uranium elements contained in the spent fuels is being extracted and effectively stored. For this, the spent fuel are oxidized and deoxidized. In this study, it is produced conceptual design specification about the spent fuel management technology research and test facilities have been produced. The first considered processes in the facilities is the metal conversion furnace in the dry environment. Since this process is operates at the high temperature range, we have to consider heat-resisting designs for the device. For the heat-resisting designs, we have surveyed and analyzed technical references for material properties. Also, we have determined the temperature distribution condition of the device based on experimental results. We have calculated thermal stress and strain of each devices by the commercial analysis software, I-DEAS. By using the results, we have analyzed design configurations of the point at issue by thermal effects, and suggested alternative design configurations. It is experimented for inspecting confidence rate of heat strain. Based on these results, necessary design specifications for heat-resisting design have been produced.

  • Fouling by inorganic scales needs to be prevented to effectively operate sea water reverse osmosis(SWRO) membrane systems. The extents of inorganic scaling with different array designs including one-pass, two-pass and several hybrid designs were evaluated using seawater from southern sea near the city of Chang-Won. The used methods for evaluation were Stiff and Davis Index(S&DSI) calculation and several laboratory experiments. The formation potential of inorganic scale fouling was quite great under the examined conditions, which was confirmed by the laboratory experimental results. The inorganic scale was not avoidable fouling if any anti-scaling measures were not applied. The RO showed decreased flux under the scale formation conditions. The increases in S&DSI from 1.43 to 5 made small decreases in flux, which indicated that formation of inorganic scales had more substantial effects on RO flux than amount of inorganic scales.

  • In this research, transformation-based optimization techniques for pipelined designs have been developed. The transformation-based optimization techniques include pipelined architecture transformations and retiming transformations. The new transformation method has the following three features. First, the overall performance of a pipelined system is optimized owing to various transformations including retiming of multiple pipelined blocks. Second, these techniques can be used to search a large solution space by allowing efficient exploration of trade-offs between area and performance. Third, these techniques can be easily extended to a new transformation or algorithm and can be used to optimize memory or bus architectures. Experimental results illustrate that these transformation-based optimization techniques improve area by 21% and performance by 17% on the average for a set of pipelined designs. Especially, the techniques are useful to efficiently explore a large design space.
