  • Ash melting chamber is one of the key facility of the pyrolysis-melting incineration system, and it should be designed and operated very carefully for avoiding solidification of slag. In this study, an example of numerical and experimental scale-up process of the melting chamber, in which high speed air is injected to the molten slag and generates bubbles, which enhances agitation of the slag and char combustion, is presented. Cold flow test, combustion and melting test in a lab-scale (30 kg/hr) chamber and a pilot scale (200 kg/hr) chamber. Minimum energy for maintaining molten slag is derived, and it was found that the molten slag can be maintained efficiently by concentrating heat into the bubbling slag.

  • The present study addresses experimental results to investigate the effect of the jet supply chamber configuration on the sonic/supersonic swirling jets, as the case study. The experiment is carried out using the convergent nozzle with a various different chamber configurations upstream the nozzle throat, which is composed of four tangential inlet holes for the swirling flows. The jet pressure ratio is varied between 3.0 and 7.0. The sonic/supersonic swirling jet flows are specified by the pitot impact and static pressure measurements and visualized using the Shadowgraph method. The results show that the major structures of the sonic/supersonic swirling jet are strongly influenced by the jet supply chamber.

  • Numerical and experimental study were carried out to characterize sound fields of low frequency in a scaled reverberation chamber for measurement of sound insulation of panels. By using BEM, lower modes of the chamber are identified and then predicted the effect of diffusers in order to destruct lower modes. Compared results with measurements show reasonable agreements, especially at the first end second modes. Based on numerical prediction, the diffuser are installed in order to improve sound fields to be more diffuse than ever. It is found that the diffuser put in nodal line of the chamber destruct evidently the first mode. Consequently, the measuring error at the low frequency can be relatively reduced compare to the case of without diffuser.

  • This work is to investigate the surface heat flux and combustion characteristics of premixed propane mixture in a constant volume chamber. The experiment of heat flux and combustion characteristics of premixed propane mixture are performed with various equivalence ratio and initial pressure conditions. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the maximum instantaneous temperature is increased with the increase of initial pressure in the chamber. There are significant differences in the burning velocity of premixed propane mixture at different measuring points in the constant volume combustion chamber. A]so, the trends of temperature difference at each measuring points are similar to the burning velocity in the combustion chamber. It is concluded that the total heat loss during the combustion period is affected by the equivalence ratio and the initial condition of fuel-air mixture.

  • In order to design efficient Urea Decomposition Chamber (UDC) for the Low Pressure (LP) Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, numerical simulations were conducted with respect to various design parameters. The design parameters examined in this simulation include the chamber diameter, inlet and outlet shape of chamber, and urea injection point. Reaction kinetics for the urea decomposition was proposed and validated with the experimental data in the range of $300{\sim}450^{\circ}C$. The effects of design parameters on the performance of UDC were evaluated by the calculated urea conversion and pressure drop. As a result, the local optimum design values were derived by the parametric study.

  • An experimental study was carried out to obtain the fundamental data about the effects of radical ignition on premixture combustion. A CVC(constant volume combustor) divided into the sub-chamber and the main chamber was used. Numerous narrow passage holes are arranged between the main chamber and the sub-chamber. The products including radicals generated by spark ignition in tile sub-chamber derives the simultaneous multi-point ignition in the main chamber. We have examined the effects of the sub-chamber volume, the diameter and number of passage holes, and the equivalence $ratio({\Phi})$ on the combustion characteristics by means of burning pressure measurement and flame visualization. In a CVC, the overall burning time including the ignition delay became very short and the maximum burning pressure was slightly increased by the radical ignition(RI) method in comparison with those by the conventional spark ignition(SI) method. Combustible lean limit by RI method is extended by ${\Phi}=0.25$ compared with that by SI method. Also, In cases of charging the number and the diameter for the fixed total cross section of the passage holes, combustion period increased significantly at a sub-chamber with a single hole, but those of the other conditions had almost a similar tendency in the sub-chamber with 4 or more holes. regardless of equivalence ratio. Therefore, it was Proved that a critical cross section exists with the number of passage holes.

  • For the experimental measurement of heat flux of DI diesel engine combustion chamber, the instantaneous temperature probes and data acquisition system were developed. By the analysis of measured temperatures at the cylinder head, the temperature at the point 3 which is located between intake and exhaust valve was higher than that of the other points. Temperatures at the point located mear the exhaust valve were higher than those of intake valve. The instantaneous and mean temperature at the cylinder head increases proportionally to the increase of the engine speed, while the temperature swing varies inversely. Temperature swings have influence on the maximum heat flux values from gas into head surface. It has been verified that these probes and data acquisition system perform well by the comparison of the trend of instantaneous temperature variation with that of measured combustion chamber pressure variation with respect to crank angle. It is presumed that these probes could be used in the measurement of other parts of combustion chamber as piston, cylinder wall etc. for the future study.

  • A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.

  • Liquid rocket engines using liquefied natural gas (LNG) or methane as a fuel is known to have several good characteristics, such as high specific impulse compared to other hydrocarbon fuels, environment-friendly exhaust gas, low production cost, and re-usability with low soot generation in the cooling channel. In this study, experimental combustion chambers capable of using LNC and $CH_{4}$ are being researched through experimental firing tests, and within easy range of eyes' inspection, there are the periodical existence of soot or discoloration in the chamber wall surface. This result means that mixture ratio of oxidizer and fuel fluctuates periodically between outer-row injectors in the mixing head in the circumferential direction. Therefore, based on this phenomenon, the variation of mixture ratio near the chamber wall caused by the spill pattern of a shear coaxial injector was analyzed quantitatively and the thermal heat flux Into the cooling channel is modified. Then, the calculated and modified results are compared with the measured ones.

  • Experimental investigations were performed to examine the characteristics of propagating flame fronts around multiple bars within a rectangular chamber. The explosion chamber is 400 mm in height, $700{\times}700mm^2$ in cross-section and has a large top-venting area, $A_v$, of $700{\times}210mm^2$. This results in a value of 0.44 for $A_v/V^{2/3}$ and a L/D value of 0.57. The multiple obstacles of length 700 mm with a blockage ratio of 30 % were placed within the chamber. Temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed video camera to investigate the interaction between the propagating flame and the obstacles. Results showed that the flame propagation speeds before the flame impinges onto the obstacle almost equal to the laminar burning velocity. As the propagating flame impinged on the obstacle, the central region of flame began to become concave, this resulted in the flame deceleration in the region. As the flame interacted with the modified flow filed generated behind the central obstacle, the probability density functions(PDFs) of the local flame displacement speed were extensively distributed toward higher speeds.
