A Study on The Identification of Characteristics For The 2 Dimensional Continuous Vibration System By Mass Sensitivity Analysis (질량감도 해석에 의한 2차원 연속계의 진동특성에 관한 연구)

  • Techniques which are able to predict and control dynamic characteristics, not affecting the vibrational characteristics on the modification of structural design, are being studied. As one of these techniques, experimental modal analysis is widely applied by many researchers. In this study, modal analysis is performed using transfer matrix method by a macro computer. The developed program would estimate the structural modal parameters precisely, and the validity of this program is certified by comparing with the experimental results of .GAMMA A. structure. Estimated modal parameters(natural frequency, vibrational mode, equivalent mass, etc.) are in accord with the experimental results. Also, the optimal location of the additive mass is determined by the evaluation of the vibrational mode and the equivalent mass. The relation between the additive mass and the equivalent mass is specified, and we come to know that the ratio of equivalent mass to additive mass alter linearly within the range of 20%.

  • When the vibration troubles occur on the ship structure during the sea trial, the rectification work is very restricted because of in-situ limitation. Usually the finite element method is used to improve vibration characteristics of the structure, but it takes lots of time and effort in modeling the structure and adjusting the finite element model in order to consider appropriate boundary conditions of a complex ship structure. Therefore, experimental methods have been in general suggested to obtain proper countermeasures without time-consuming in modeling. In this paper, FRF(frequency response function) synthesis method is applied to estimate natural frequency of the modified ship structure, which is obtained from experimental and numerical methods.

  • We obtain the mathematical model of the hard disk drive actuator system the system response data of the finite element analysis or experimental results. The model is base on the Rayleigh-Ritz method to approximate the dynamic response of the actuator system. The basic idea is to use the curve-fit technique to obtain the approximation coefficients. It allows the dynamic analysis of the actuator system without resort to the repetitive finite element modeling work. Even though the dynamic characteristics of the system of the system are affected somewhat by the structural modification and the change of the material properties, we can use the modified size and dynamic properties of the actuator system in the mathematical model to some extent. In this study, we express the mathematical model of the simplified rectangular plate first and then proceed to the actual hard disk drive actuator system.

  • This study presents the evaluation process for door module. Its objective evades the resonance generated at module plate due to the operation of window regulator motor. For this study, the design improvement process is composed of experimental methods having three steps. First step is modal analysis at door assembly status for acquisition of dynamic characteristics which are modal frequency and damping. Second step is a vibration experiment to get the test mode considered an efficiency of window regulator motor. Last step is a vibration measurement by the form of $6{\times}6$ array on module plate. A vibration measurement of 6x6 array form can be got to three analysis results which are a transfer path of vibration using cross correlation function, a vibration map using OA level and a contribution by frequency band using coherent output power spectrum on module plate. These results are applied to SDM(structural dynamic modification) for design improvement to get around the resonance on module plate by the excitation of window regulator motor.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a tennis racket were identified by experimental modal analysis and the sweet spot due to these was calculated. A tennis racket was selected as a model reference and modal parameters of the racket were estimated from the transfer function measured by experiment. The transfer function was reconstructed by the modified modal parameters on the assumption that the racket was locally modified, for example, a change in the material of the frame and the attachment of a damping material to the grip. The change of the dynamic characteristics, especially natural frequency and magnitude of the second and the third vibrational modes, were evaluated from the reconstructed transfer function. The change of the sweet spot due to the modified modal parameters was estimated and visualized through computer graphic simulation by the criterion of the sweet spot measured before structural modification.   • In this research, a typical tension-leg type of floating platform incorporated with an innovative concept of underwater tuned liquid column damper system (UWTLCD) is studied. The purpose of this study is to improve the structural safety by means of mitigating the wave induced vibrations and stresses on the offshore floating Tension Leg Platform (TLP) system. Based on some encouraging results from a previous study, where a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) system was employed in a floating platform system to reduce the vibration of the main structure, in this study, the traditional TLCD system was modified and tested. Firstly, the orifice-tube was replaced with a smaller horizontal tube and secondly, the TLCD system was combined into the pontoon system under the platform. The modification creates a multipurpose pontoon system associated with vibration mitigation function. On the other hand, the UWTLCD that is installed underwater instead would not occupy any additional space on the platform and yet provide buoyancy to the system. Experimental tests were performed for the mitigation effect and parameters besides the wave conditions, such as pontoon draught and liquid-length in the TLCD were taken into account in the test. It is found that the accurately tuned UWTLCD system could effectively reduce the dynamic response of the offshore platform system in terms of both the vibration amplitude and tensile forces measured in the mooring tethers.

  • Electronic equipment has been applied to virtually every area associated with commercial, industrial, and military applications. Specifically, electronics have been incorporated into avionics components installed in aircraft. This equipment is exposed to dynamic loads such as vibration, shock, and acceleration. Especially, avionics components installed in a helicopter are subjected to simultaneous sine and random base excitations. These are denoted as sine on random vibrations according to MIL-STD-810F, Method 514.5. In the past, isolators have been applied to avionics components to reduce vibration and shock. However, an isolator applied to an avionics component installed in a helicopter can amplify the vibration magnitude, and damage the chassis, circuit card assembly, and the isolator itself via resonance at low-frequency sinusoidal vibrations. The objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of an avionics component installed in a helicopter and the structural dynamic modification of its tray plate without an isolator using both a finite element analysis and experiments. The structure is optimized by dynamic loads that are selected by comparing the vibration, shock, and acceleration loads using vibration and shock response spectra. A finite element model(FEM) was constructed using a simplified geometry and valid element types that reflect the dynamic characteristics. The FEM was verified by an experimental modal analysis. Design parameters were extracted and selected to modify the structural dynamics using topology optimization, and design of experiments(DOE). A prototype of a modified model was constructed and its feasibility was evaluated using an FEM and a performance test.

Finite Element Modeling and Nonlinear Analysis for Seismic Assessment of Off-Diagonal Steel Braced RC Frame

  • The geometric nonlinearity of off-diagonal bracing system (ODBS) could be a complementary system to covering and extending the nonlinearity of reinforced concrete material. Finite element modeling is performed for flexural frame, x-braced frame and the ODBS braced frame system at the initial phase. Then the different models are investigated along various analyses. According to the experimental results of flexural and x-braced frame, the verification is done. Analytical assessments are performed in according to three dimensional finite element modeling. Nonlinear static analysis is considered to obtain performance level and seismic behaviour, and then the response modification factors calculated from each model's pushover curve. In the next phase, the evaluation of cracks observed in the finite element models, especially for RC members of all three systems is performed. The finite element assessment is performed on engendered cracks in ODBS braced frame for various time steps. The nonlinear dynamic time history analysis accomplished in different stories models for three records of Elcentro, Naghan and Tabas earthquake accelerograms. Dynamic analysis is performed after scaling accelerogram on each type of flexural frame, x-braced frame and ODBS braced frame one by one. The base-point on RC frame is considered to investigate proportional displacement under each record. Hysteresis curves are assessed along continuing this study. The equivalent viscous damping for ODBS system is estimated in according to references. Results in each section show the ODBS system has an acceptable seismic behaviour and their conclusions have been converged when the ODBS system is utilized in reinforced concrete frame.

Shake table testing of confined adobe masonry structures

  • Buildings made using the locally available clay materials are amongst the least expensive forms of construction in many developing countries, and therefore, widely popular in remote areas. It is despite the fact that these low-strength masonry structures are vulnerable to seismic forces. Since transporting imported materials like cement and steel in areas inaccessible by motorable roads is challenging and financially unviable. This paper presents, and experimentally investigates, adobe masonry structures that utilize the abundantly available local clay materials with moderate use of imported materials like cement, aggregates, and steel. Shake-table tests were performed on two 1:3 reduce-scaled adobe masonry models for experimental seismic testing and verification. The model AM1 was confined with vertical lightly reinforced concrete columns provided at all corners and reinforced concrete horizontal bands (i.e., tie beams) provided at sill, lintel, and eave levels. The model AM2 was confined only with the horizontal bands provided at sill, lintel, and eave levels. The models were subjected to sinusoidal base motions for studying the damage evolution and response of the model under dynamic lateral loading. The lateral forcedeformation capacity curves for both models were developed and bi-linearized to compute the seismic response parameters: stiffness, strength, ductility, and response modification factor R. Seismic performance levels, story-drift, base shear coefficient, and the expected structural damages, were defined for both the models. Seismic performance assessment of the selected models was carried out using the lateral seismic force procedure to evaluate their safety in different seismic zones. The use of vertical columns in AM1 has shown a considerable increase in the lateral strength of the model in comparison to AM2. Although an R factor equal to 2.0 is recommended for both the models, AM1 has exhibited better seismic performance in all seismic zones due to its relatively high lateral strength in comparison to AM2.
