In micro-drilling of brittle materials including glass, cracks occur at the exit surface. In drilling glass, the main type of crack is cone crack. Cone crack is generated by thrust force acting at the bottom surface of the workpiece. Cone crack size could be reduced by changing cutting conditions, but cone crack still existed. Two methods were proposed to prevent crack formation and perfect hole shapes were obtained. One method is attaching two glass plates with water and the other method is constraining two glass plates. The proposed methods eliminated tensile stress acting on the exit surface of glass and prevented crack propagation.
Exhaust gas recirculation method is widely used among various methods for reducing nitrogen oxides in automobile engines and incinerators. In the present study, the computational fluid dynamic analysis was accomplished to derive the optimal location of air nozzle exit position by changing its position in a venturi tube for the maximum flue gas recirculation effect. In addition, the flue gas recirculation characteristics with a cone at the exit of air nozzle was elucidated with flue gas recirculation flow rate ratio and mixed gas exit temperature. When the air nozzle exit position was changed from the start position (z = 0) to the end position (z = 0.6m) of the exhaust gas recirculation exit pipe, the change of streamline and temperature distribution in the venturi tube was observed. The exhaust gas recirculation flow rate and the average temperature at the mixed gas exit position was quantitatively compared. From the present study, the optimal location of air nozzle exit position for the maximum flue gas recirculation flow rate ratio and maximum mixed gas exit temperature is z = 0.15m (1/4L). In addition, when the cone is installed at the outlet of the air nozzle, the velocity of the air nozzle outlet is increased, the flue gas recirculation flow rate was increased by about 2 times of the flow rate without cone, and the mixed gas exit temperature is increased by $116^{\circ}C$.

The ultrasonic resonance method was applied to detect the disbond interface and empty layer between steel and FRP of the exit cone. The ultrasonic resonance method can easily detect the disbond interface and empty layer by amplifying the ultrasonic signal, but pulse echo method is difficult to distinguish adhesive interface from disbond interface or empty layer. The resonance frequency was predicted using the pressure reflection coefficient of 3-layered medium, and measured from ultrasonic signal of the test block using Fast Fourier Transform. The ultrasonic resonance proved that the predicted resonance frequency was in good agreement with the measured resonance frequency.

The finite volume method for radiation is applied to investigate a radiative heating of rocket base plane due to searchlight and plume emissions. Exhaust plume is assumed to absorb, emit and scatter the radiant energy isotropically as well as anisotropically, while the medium between plume boundary and base plane is cold and nonparticipating. Scattering phase function is modelled by a finite series of Legendre polynomials. After validating benchmark solution by comparison with that of previous works obtained by the Monte-Carlo method, further investigations have been done by changing such various parameters as plume cone angle, scattering albedo, scattering phase function, optical radius and nozzle exit temperature. The results show that the base plane is predominantly heated by the plume emission rather than the searchlight emission when the nozzle exit temperature is the same as that of plume.

Optimum shape of Double-cone supersonic inlet is studied by using numerical methods. Double-cone intake shape is used for the design optimization study. And the total pressure recovery at the exit is used to assess the aerodynamic performance of the inlet.
This paper investigates the spray angle and the outline shape of the liquid sheet discharged from a simplex swirl nozzle. A theoretical model was proposed and the corresponding experimental data were presented for comparison. Axial and tangential velocities and thickness of the liquid sheet at the nozzle exit were also predicted. The liquid sheet thickness at nozzle exit, as well as the discharge coefficient, turned out to be a sole function of the swirl Reynolds number. However, the axial and tangential velocities at nozzle exit and the spray angle could not be expressed only with the swirl Reynolds number. The predicted outline shape and spray angle of the liquid sheet agreed reasonably with the measured data.

Numerical simulation was performed for the 3-dimensional flow filed of gas and particle phase for cyclone dust collector. FVM(Finite Volume Method) was employed for gas phase. The flow was solved suing the k-.varepsilon. epsilon turbulence model. The particle exit at the bottom of the cone was treated as a solid wall in this model because the gas flow through the effective dust exit is usually insignificant. The major parameters considered in this study was vortex finder diameter, effective dust exit diameterm vortex finder length, inlet type for dimension performance. Particle trajectory calculations were made for three different, particle sizes of 1, 25 and 50 .mu.m. The results obtained from this study give some physical insight of dust particle collection mechanism together with the indication of the collection efficiency. The simulation results were in generally good agreement with empirical knowledge. The application of this kind of computer program looks promising as a potential tool for the design of cyclone and determination of optimum operating condition.
An experimental investigation has been carried out to reveal the atomization process of the diesel fuel spray. The spray injected through a single hole nozzle was taken by a camera on the opposite side of a stroboscope for macroscopic observation or a nanolite for microscopic observation. The effect of nozzle aspect ratio was analyzed with disintegration phenomena of the diesel spray. Based on the enlarged spray photograph, atomization process was observed in detail and further the spray cone angle was measured under various ambient pressures. The result shows that atomization of diesel spray in early stage of injection is mainly progressed in the vicinity of spray periphery region except the region close to the nozzle exit and spray head region. The spray cone angle is nearly constant under the pressurized condition, while it decreases with elapsing time under the atmospheric condition.
In the pressure swirl atomizer, the liquid is injected through tangential passages into a swirl chamber, from which it emerges with both tangential and axial velocity components to form a thin conical sheet at the nozzle exit. This sheet rapidly attenuates, finally disintegrating into ligaments and then drops. The purpose of this study is to measure the spray characteristics according to variation of viscosity of the spray produced by the pressure swirl atomizer. The nozzle tested here were especially designed for this investigation. The discharge coefficient is determined by measuring the volume flow rate with a flow meter and the cone angle of the liquid sheets issuing from the nozzle is obtained from series of photographs of the sheet for various liquid viscosity and injection pressure. And mean drop size is measured by image processing method. It is found that the geometrical characteristics of the nozzle and the variation of viscosity were the influential parameters to determine the spray characteristics such as the cone angle, discharge coefficients and SMD.

The heat transfer characteristics of free surface water jet impinging normally against a flat uniform heat flux surface were investigated. This deals with the effect of three nozzle configurations (Cone type, Reverse cone type, Vertical circular type) on the local and the average heat transfer. Heat transfer measurements were made for water jet issuing from a nozzle of which exit diameter 8 mm. The experimental conditions investigated are Reynolds number range of 27000 ~ 70000( $V_{O}$=3 ~ 8 m/s), nozzle-to-target plate distances H/D=2 ~ 10, and radial distance from the stagnation point r/D ~ = 0 ~ 7.42. For all jet velocities of H/D=2, the local Nusselt number decreased monotonically with increasing radial distance. However, for H/D from 4 to 10, and for the jet velocity $V_{O}$.geq.7 m/s for Cone type nozzle and $V_{O}$.geq.6 m/s for the other type nozzles, the Nusselt number distributions exhibited secondary peaks at r/D=3 ~ 3.5. For Reverse cone type nozzle and Vertical circular nozzle, the maximum stagnation point heat transfer and the maximum average heat transfer occurs at H/D=8. But for the Cone type nozzle, the maximum stagnation and average heat transfer occurs at H/D=10, 4, respectively. From the optimum nozzle-to-target plate distance, the stagnation and the average heat transfer reveal the following ranking: Reverse cone type nozzle, Vertical circular type nozzle, Cone type nozzle.ozzle.
