Spectroscopic and electrostatic probe measurements were made to examine plasma characteristics with or without a metal plate for a 10-㎾-class direct-current arcjet Heat fluxes into the plate from the plasma were also evaluated with a Nickel slug and thermocouple arrangement. Ammonia and mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen were used. The NH$_3$ and $N_2$+3H$_2$ plasmas in the nozzle and in the downstream plume without a plate were in thermodynamical nonequilibrium states. As a result, the H-atom electronic excitation temperature and the $N_2$ molecule-rotational excitation temperature intensively decreased downstream in the nozzle although the NH molecule-rotational excitation temperature did not show an axial decrease. Each temperature was kept in a small range in the plume without a plate except for the NH rotational temperature for NH$_3$ gas. On the other hand, as approaching the plate, the thermodynamical nonequilibrium plasma came to be a temperature-equilibrium one because the plasma flow tended to stagnate in front of the plate. The electron temperature had a small radial variation near the plate. Both the electron number density and the heat flux decreased radially outward, and an increase in H$_2$ mole fraction raised them at a constant radial position. In cases with NH$_3$ and $N_2$+3H$_2$ a large number of NH radical with a radially wide distribution was considered to cause a large amount of energy loss, i.e., frozen flow loss, for arcjet thrusters.

In this study, the measurements of infrared (IR) signature were carried out using a small scale engine with the variation of the engine performance and target positions in the exhaust plume. The operating conditions of the engine were kept constant for each test, and the measured positions were sapced at refular intervals from the nozzle exit. The measured IR signature was calibrated by using a blackbody. The results of infrared signature measurements are shown in three bands for analysis of spectral characteristics. As the engine performance decreased and the distance from the nozzle exit increased, the IR signature decreased and the level of decrease varied according to the bands.

Evacuation performance, starting transient, and plume blowback at diffuser breakdown of a straight cylindrical supersonic exhaust diffuser with no externally supplied secondary flow are investigated. Pressure records in the transitional periods are measured by a small-scale cold-gas simulator. Flow-fields evolving in the diffuser-type ejector are solved by preconditioned Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a low-Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model edited for turbulence compressibility effects. The present RANS method is properly validated with measured static wall pressure distributions and evacuation level at steady operation as well as the pressure records during the transition regime.

3 dimensional turbine exhaust gas flow was simplified to an axisymmetrical flow and calculated with detailed chemistry models. GRI 35 species-217 reaction step model and simplified 11 species 15 reaction model was applied to the secondary reaction of the turbine exhaust gas and compared. All the model captured the secondary combustion on the base region, and the temperature was 600K higher than that without turbine exhaust gas. This means the local temperature of the base can be higher in the case of real 3 dimensional flow. The simplified model show the similar results to the GRI detailed chemistry model although the former affected the engine plume structure slightly.

Infrared signatures emitted from naval ships are mainly classified into internal signatures generated by the internal combustion engine of the ship and external signatures generated from the surface of the ship heated by solar heat. The internal signatures are also affected by the chemical components ($CO_2$, $H_2O$, CO and soot) of the exhaust plumes generated by the gas turbine and diesel engine, which constitute the main propulsion system. Therefore, in this study, the chemical composition ratios of the exhaust plumes generated by the gas turbines and diesel engines installed in domestic naval ships were examined to identify the chemical components and their levels. The influence of the chemical components of the exhaust plumes and their ratios on the infrared signatures of a naval ship was investigated using orthogonal arrays. The infrared signature intensity of the exhaust plumes calculated using infrared signature analysis software was converted to the signal-to-noise ratio to facilitate the analysis. The signature analysis showed that $CO_2$, soot and $H_2O$ are the major components influencing the mid-wave infrared signatures of both the gas turbine and diesel engine. In addition, it was confirmed that $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ are the major components influencing the long-wave infrared signatures.

This study was conducted to reduce the computation time required for the computational acoustic analysis of the supersonic rocket jet plume. In order to reduce the computation time, computational acoustic analysis was performed assuming that the supersonic jet plume is a two-dimensional axis-symmetric problem. The results of computational acoustic analysis showed similar results to the acoustic load measurement results. Through this study, it was confirmed that the acoustic load prediction of the supersonic rocket jet plume can be predicted using a two-dimensional axis-symmetric computational analysis.

Performance characteristics of subscale diffuser for high-altitude simulation have been numerically investigated. The length of diffuser entrance with respect to nozzle exit diameter was changed to 0, 50, 100%, respectively. In addition, flow characteristics have been studied for various length to diameter ratio of secondary throat diffuser. As a result, the shape of plume was contracted for insufficient length of diffuser entrance. Also, if the length to diameter ratio of secondary throat diffuser were less than 7 or 8, mach disk has been formed inside the diffuser.
Accurate simulation of jet plume exhausting into the open space as well as onto the opposing wall is of interest both numerically and physically; the latter, from a system designer's point of view. In the current work, Navier-Stokes computation is undertaken to capture the flow pattern of a supersonic jet impinging onto a rectangular duct which deflects the vertical jet horizontally. Of particular interest are the flow structure in the jet exhaust area, pressure pattern and the magnitude of pressure force at the bottom wall. Usefulness of present characteristic boundary condition applied at the exiting plane of the duct is demonstrated by capturing such complex flow structures for different lengths of the deflection duct.
The base flow regions of a three-body sounding rocket containing multiple exhaust plumes were numerically investigated in three dimensions for a free stream Mach number of 2.7 at flight altitude 18.5 km. The flowfields were calculated using the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an one-equation turbulence model of Baldwin-Earth. The present calculations were executed based upon a chemically frozen, single perfect gas model assumption. Due to the symmetry of the three-body rocket of each single nozzle, only one fourth of the computational domain was considered for the analysis. The results indicate that a babe heating effect is not considerable due to the small expansion of the plumes. In the base, however, a low speed recirculating flow dominates the region.

Starting characteristics of the axi-symmetric supersonic exhaust diffuser(SED) with a second throat are numerically investigated. Main purpose of this study is to predict theoretical starting pressure of STED using 1-D normal shock theory and to present the range of optimum starting pressure through parametric study with essential design parameters of STED influencing on starting performance. Renolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations with a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model incorporated with standard wall function are solved to simulate the diffusing evolutions of the nozzle plume. Minimum(optimum) starting pressure difference of $20{\sim}25%$ between 1-D theory and experimental evidences validated from previous results[5] is also applied to predict those in this system. The analysis results indicate that dominant parameters for diffuser starting in this system is diffuser expansion ratio($A_d/A_t$), which has optimum value 120 and second throat area ratio($A_d/A_{st}$), which has optimum range $3.3{\sim}3.5$.
