In vehicle exhaust systems the sound attenuation and the reduction of flow losses are often two competing demands. The present study considers a fully vehicle exhaust system and investigates experimentally both the sound attenuation and the flow performance of production configurations including the catalyst, the resonator, and the muffler. Dynamometer experiments have been This study is on the development of a new muffler composed of a valve system using an elasticity of spring. The valve system conducted with the daewoo 1500cc Lanos engine with speeds ranging from 1000 to 5000 rpm. Measurements include the flow rates, the temperatures and the absolute dynamic pressures of the hot exhaust gases at point locations. The present study describes the experimental aspects of an ongoing effort to validate and use the nonlinear fluid dynamic models in the time-domain for the prediction of the acoustic and power performance of firing internal combustion engines with full production exhaust systems.
An on-board monitoring system for an automobile emission gas has a test chamber remote from the automobile's engine exhaust gas stream: apparatus for supplying the chamber with sampled exhaust gases. A single hydrocarbon sensor exposed to the exhaust gas in the chamber to render a signal responsive to the hydrocarbon. The conductive ions in emission gas was checked by the HC sensor in test chamber. A preferred application includes hydrocarbons in an automotive exhaust gas stream by exposing a transition porous alumina($Al_{2}O_{3}$) ceramic based sensor to the same exhaust gas stream. By combining the electrical signal, a measure of hydrocarbons can be provided.
Recently, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle. Especially, exhaust emission from diesel vehicles are blown to be harmful to human health and environment. Photoacoustic Spectroscopy system is very useful technology for simultaneous and continuous measurement of the various components of the automotive exhaust gas. In this study, in order to reduce emission gases from automobile, we tried to develop the measurement system of Photoacoustic Spectroscopy. To improve performance of high sensitive Photoacoustic Spectroscopy system for automotive exhaust emissions, the shape of Photoacoustic Spectroscopy cell was optimized to use the flow analysis. And Exhaust emission data of the 1,500cc gasoline engine was fixed the working fluid. The characteristics of fluid flow for cell were analyzed by various conditions in detail.
In order to evaluate and improve the performance of local exhaust ventilation systems for two TCE degreasing (A, B) and two electroplating (C, E) and one acid dipping & plating (D) operations located in Kimhae, the performance test was conducted with trace gases and a thermal anemometer (Kanomax 24-6111, Japan). For the inadequately designed systems, the improvement and redesigns in compliance with recommendation by ACGIH was suggested. The results of performance test for each system are as follows; 1. System of Workplace A was generally well-designed. Actual exhaust air flow rate was in excess of 68% above the recommended standard exhaust air flow rate. 2. System of Workplace B was very well-designed and completely enclosed. 3. All systems of Workplace C including hoods were poorly-designed and actual exhaust air flow rates were insufficient for open tanks. All systems should be upgraded according to ACGIH recommendations. 4. Supply and exhaust air flow rate of push-pull exhaust systems in Workplace D should be greatly increased. The width of flange of dipping tank hood should be increased with the value suggested. 5. System of Workplace E was well-designed. Actual exhaust air flow rate was in excess of 54% above the required.
This paper investigates the exhaust effectiveness of smoke, in the case of fire in a large atrium space. Numerical analysis was conducted to simulate transient fire growth in a test room, modeled by the Murcia atrium fire test. Various indices representing the exhaust performance of the exhaust system were obtained, such as the height of the smoke layer, and the instantaneous and accumulative capture efficiency of the smoke. The residual life time of smoke from the fire was also obtained, by injecting tracer gases at the fire location, depending on the airflow rate, and the location of the exhausts. The capture efficiency based on smoke concentration at the exhausts exhibits how much smoke can be removed by the exhaust system; whereas, the exhaust effectiveness based on residual life time indicates how rapidly the smoke can reach the exhaust locations, before being exhausted. The definitions and meanings of the indices to be used in representing the exhaust performance of a smoke exhaust system installed in a large space are discussed.
IMO(International Maritime Organization) continues to strengthen environmental regulations on exhaust gases such as CO2, NOx, SOx. As for sulfur oxides, from 1 January 2020, all ships on international voyages must use fuel with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less. Or, it is obligatory to use an exhaust gas treatment device that has the same effect. Shipping companies are using low-sulfur oil, replacing them with LNG fuel, or installing scrubbers that suppress sulfur oxide emissions. In the case of ships using bunker C oil, the load on the engine is lower when entering and departing, so the exhaust gas pressure is lowered and the scrubber cannot be properly utilized. Therefore, diesel oil with low sulfur content is used when entering and leaving the coast. When diesel oil is used, exhaust gas is directly discharged through the control system and piping system, and when bunker C oil is used, sulfur oxides are reduced by scrubbers through other control systems and piping systems to discharge exhaust gas. Accordingly, a company has developed a system called a three-way damper valve that can control exhaust gas emissions while integrating these two control systems and piping systems into one. In this study, the control characteristics of the integrated exhaust gas control system and structural safety against external loads in a high-temperature exhaust gas environment were reviewed.
As current and future automobile emission regulations become more stringent, the research on flow distribution for an exhaust manifold and close-coupled catalyst(CCC) has become an interesting and remarkable subjects. The design of a CCC and exhaust manifold is a formidable task due to the complexity of the flow distribution caused by the pulsating flows from piston motion and engine combustion. Transient flow at the exhaust manifold can be analyzed with various computational fluid dynamics(CFD) tools. However, the results of such simulations must be verified with appropriate experimental data from real engine operating condition. In this study, an experimental approach was performed to investigate the flow distribution of exhaust gases for conventional cast types and stainless steel bending types of a four-cylinder engine. The pressure distribution of each exhaust sub-component was measured using a simulated dynamic flow bench and five-hole pitot probe. Moreover, using the results of the pitot tube measurement at the exit of the CCC, the flow distribution for two types of manifolds(cast type and bending type) was compared in terms of flow uniformity. Based on these experimental techniques, this study can be highly applicable to the design and optimization of exhaust for the better use of catalytic converters to meet the PZEV emission regulation.
This paper studies the identification of a combustion model, which is used to design a linear controller of a steam generation quantity and harmful exhaust gases of a Refuse Incineration Plant(RIP). Even though the RIP has strong nonlinearities and complexities, it is identified as a MIMO parametric ARX model from experimental input-output data sets. Unknown model parameters are decided from experimental input-output data sets, using system identification algorithm based on Instrumental Variables(IV) method. It is shown that the identified model well approximates the input-output combustion characteristics.
As conservation of global environment has becoming a major outstanding issue of the world, the International Maritime Organization(IMO) has been legislation a convention for prevention of air pollution from ships. By the new convention, use of air pollutants such SOx, NOx, Freon and Halin Gas shall be restricted. In this regards, analysing these requirements of the convention is required as the cinvention will also be applied in restriction of descharging exhaust gases from ships by estsblishing a requirement of Sox and NOx discharged. The purpose of this study is as follows; 1) Introdcuing of the backgrounds of legislating the convention for prevention of air pollution from ships and major contents of the convention and a countermeasuures in the convention by Korea 2) Reviewing by analyzing the influence in domestic industries concernd by restriction of SOx, NOx in exhaust gases and sulpher content of fuel oil 3) Preparing a countermeasure in the convention properly.
