  • A fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer has been developed for measuring the $CO_2$ concentration during transient condition of a SI engine. The analyzer consists of the non-dispersive infrared absorption method, electrical chopping system and water cooling system. The analyzer has good repeatability, linearity and permissible drift characteristic. Besides, it showed 18ms of a response to measure the $CO_2$ concentration. The fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer was applied to a single cylinder SI engine and the $CO_2$ emission was examined during engine start. Simultaneously, the standard exhaust gas analyzer, which has slow response time, was used for confirming the accuracy of the exhaust gas analysis using the fast-response $CO_2$ analyzer. The developed analyzer showed much faster responsive characteristic than that of a standard analyzer and made cycle by cycle exhaust gas analysis possible. The transient engine operating characteristics will be estimated from the $CO_2$ concentration of engine-out emissions and engine operating variables.

  • A fast response $CO_2$ analyzer has been developed to study transient characteristics on an SI engine. The analyzer has the delay time of 4.5 ms and time constant of 2.8 ms, which is fast enough to measure $CO_2$ concentration on a transient condition. Wide range of A/F(Air/Fuel) ratio can be estimated using the analyzer with an additional switch type oxygen sensor. The results of measurement of $CO_2$ concentration and A/F ratio on a transient condition including rapid acceleration/deceleration and EGR(Ehxaust Gas Recirculation) on/off are presented and compared with a commercial exhaust gas analyzer and UEGO(Universial Exhaust Gas Oxyzen) sensor.

  • FTIR spectroscopy, useful technology for simultaneous and continuous measurement of the various components of the automotive exhaust gas, is utilized to investigate catalytic reaction charactristics of methane and a few unregulated exhaust emissions of NGV. Major findings are (1) catalytic reaction characteristics of methane measured in unsteady states of varying temperature are similar to those measured in steady states, (2) about 24 % of NO was oxidized to $NO_2$ as soon as they encounter catalysts, (3) study of formaldehyde suffers from difficulties in measurement due to the proximity in wavenumber of formaldehyde and methane, and requires an analyzer of higher resolution and accuracy than used in this study.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties but the reason for this is not clear. Especially the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel demands extensibe investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. Bio-Diesel oil has a great possibility to solve the pollution problem caused by the exhaust gas from diesel engine vehicles. The use of bio-oils in diesel engines has received considerable atten-tion to the forseeable depletion of world oil supplies. So bio-diesel oil has been attracted with attentions for alternative and clean energy source. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fea-sibility of the rice-bran oil for alternative fuel in a diesel engine with rgard to exhaust emis-sions.

  • A fast response $CO_2$ ($fCO_2$) analyzer for real-time measurement of carbon dioxide concentration during transient states of internal combustion engines has been developed. This analyzer uses non-dispersive infrared absorption (NDIR) technique for measuring $CO_2$ concentration and Kalman filter for removing noise components from output signals. The analyzer has good linearity, repeatability and drift with a response time of 11 ms; it is sufficiently fast to detect $CO_2$ concentration during transient states of internal combustion engines. The $fCO_2$ analyzer was used to measure transient $CO_2$ concentration of exhaust gas of the SI engine with a standard gas analyzer, and the signal of the $fCO_2$ analyzer was compared to that of the standard gas analyzer. The two concentrations were well matched during the steady state, and the $fCO_2$ analyzer could measure the variations of $CO_2$ concentration during the transient state.

  • The engine behavior in a transient condition is important to not only emission regulations but also fuel economy. A fast response gas analyzer can be a useful tool to investigate exhaust gas in a transient operation. It should be designed to analyze gas concentration with a short time constant by a fast sampling module and an appropriate measuring method for each emission element. In this study, a new fast sampling module is introduced and flow analysis is performed by numerical simulation. The analysis has shown the proper operating condition and the sensitivity of the module for practical application. Calculated flow to the sampling module has $0.5{\sim}4%$ error, while backflow toward the expansion tube is expected when pressure in CP (Constant Pressure) chamber is over 0.6 bar. For a stable supply of flow to the optical cell, sample gas pressure should be in the range, $0.35{\sim}1.90$ bar, when the pressure in the CP camber and the optical cell are 0.2 bar and 0.158 bar, respectively.

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. • The regulations for hydrocarbon emission from vehicles have become much more stringent in recent years. These more stringent regulations request vehicle manufacturers to develop the advanced exhaust system for reducing exhaust emissions. The exhaust emissions has many sources in vehicle. In order to investigate the characteristics of hydrocarbon(HC) in the exhaust manifold, concentrations of individual HC species were measured in exhaust process. Using sampling valve, the light hydrocarbon emissions were captured in the exhaust manifold(catalyst before and after) and analyzed from LPLi engine exhaust manifold(catalyst before and after) using different fuel properties. Then exhaust samples were measured by gas chromatography(GC) and exhaust gas analyzer. Catalyst conversion efficiency for fuel properties of Butane 100% was better than Propane 100%. Start delay of LPLi engine was observed as increment of propane contents in LPG fuels.

  • This is a thesis about the experiment of comparison characteristic of power and exhaust gas in the same condition between diesel engine that is equipped turbocharger different from response power to increase effectiveness of the engine which is recently used in a lot of industry which requires high power. Resulting of the experiment with natural aspiration diesel engine and turbocharger diesel engine, difference in low speed is not significant, but in high speed, effectiveness of turbocharger diesel engine is much higher than the other one. In other hand, in exhaust gas experiment, turbocharger model exhausts more $NO_X$ and $O_2$, but it doesn't significantly affect the result when it comes with decreasing of $CO_2$ and effectiveness of increased power characteristic. As a result, the turbocharger diesel engine is economically effective comparing with the natural aspiration diesel engine.
