Combustion Characteristics of a Staged Burner for a Boiler (다단 연소 버너의 보일러 연소실에서의 연소 특성)

  • The demand for a boiler with low NOx burner is increasing with the recent strict NOx regulation. Staged burner is a common low NOx burner to suppress the formation of thermal NOx by yielding local fuel rich and fuel lean condition. The staged burner gives fire with bigger frontal area and length compared with a conventional burner, which changes heat transfer characteristics in the combustion chamber. The heat transfer and exhaust gas characteristics has been studied in the present study for a 0.5 t/h class furnace type boiler adopting the staged burner. A numerical simulation has been conducted to clarify the detailed physics inside the combustion chamber.

  • Hydrocarbon adsorber is considered as a promising technology to reduce cold start HCs in automotive exhaust gas. In this study, three in-line adsorber systems were tried to reduce the cold start emission. To check the basic characteristics of adsorber converters, surface areas, TPD and TP A were examined after a hydrothermal aging. Also idle engine bench was used to find the adsorption and desorption capabilities of the adsorber systems at cold start. Finally a practicability of the adsorber systems for the LEV achievement was checked with FTP test on a 2.0 D MIT vehicle. The results of this study indicate that hydrocarbon adsorber system is one of the promising passive technologies to meet the ULEV regulation.

  • Vehicle weight reduction is a known strategy to improve fuel efficiency and strengthen exhaust gas regulation. The use of high strength steel can satisfy safety, efficiency, emission, manufacturability, durability, and cost requirements. However, springback of high strength steel results in undesired shape defects. Springback is one of the most important issues of high strength steel for many applications in an automobile. Servo press has various capabilities to improve defects, process conditions, and productivity problems when forming a high strength steel. Especially, servo press can be set to function with variable slide motion in a single operation. In this study, the effect of servo press slide motion on 980MPa high strength steel was investigated through U-bending test.

  • $CO_2$ emission regulation will be prescribed and main issue in automotive industry. Mostly, vehicle's fuel efficiency deeply related to $CO_2$ emission is regulated by qualified driving test cycle by using chassis dynamometer and exhaust gas analyser. But, real driving fuel consumption rate depends so much on the individual usage profile and where it is being driven: city traffic, road conditions. In this study, vehicle model of fuel consumption rate for ICEV and PHEV was developed through co-simulation with CRUISE model and Simulink based on driving control model. The simulation results of fuel consumption rate were analysed with on-road vehicle data and compared with its official level.

  • High efficiency operation is required for motors of vehicle to increase fuel efficiency due to the regulation of exhaust gas. This paper presents a control method of fuel pressure to increase fuel efficiency and a sensorless control method of BLDC motor to get higher efficiency than conventional brushed DC motor. Initial rotor position of BLDC motor is detected from current value that is occurred by test voltage pulse and rotor is accelerated by defined sequence to enter sensorless operation mode. The algorithm to control flow rate of fuel pump uses PI controller that is control motor speed to maintain the target fuel pressure commanded by ECU.

  • The International Maritime Organization has conducted SEEMP for reducing $CO_2$ emission from ships. The study was carried out by comparing the real application of three shipping companies with IMO guideline about SEEMP on the same category. This paper suggests a method to improve implementation of SEEMP more efficiently through a grasp of the problem from its real application. Improvements are error correction of Company EEOI, unification of EEOI data acquisition period, compliance of measurements for fuel-efficient operation, suggestion of $CO_2$ mass conversion factors for various fuel and EEOI goal setting through formal standards of the International Maritime Organization.

  • As emission gas regulation of deisel vehicles is strengthened to Euro-6, It becomes difficult to deal with NOx regulated value mainly by EGR without additional after-treatment system. In addition, RDE(Real Driving Emissions) test will be introduced after september 2017. Therefore, It is essential to develop the after-treatment of diesel vehicles which reduce NOx emissions. It is possible to use DOC, DPF, LNT or DOC, DPF and SCR as a after-treatment system for reducing NOx. However, It is expected that the SCR will be applied widely because LNT alone does not have sufficient NOx purification efficiency. In this study, It tried to analyze the efficiency of reducing NOx emissions during the mode test by attaching a NOx sensor to test vehicle. As a result, It was confirmed that NOx emissions was significantly reduce through the after-treatment system from engine. And the NOx reduction efficiency of SCR was about 4.5 times better than DOC, DPF.

  • The importance of the more efficient cogeneration system is emphasized. Also the more clean energy is needed at recent energy system. The cogeneration system using Lean burn engine is more preferred to the system using Rich burn engine because of the electrical efficiency. Although the cogeneration system using Lean burn engine is economically preferred, because of the NOx emission level, the system using Rich burn engine with 3-way catalyst can only be used in Korea. The NOx regulation level is 50ppm at oxygen level 13%. The cogeneration hybrid system using Lean burn engine is up to be optimized because of the large amount of the extra-fuel at the after-burner system. The after-burner system at different concept was applied. The reduction time for the activation temperature of the DeNOx catalyst was achieved by making a hole between the combustor and boiler. Because of the lowered fuel consumption, the lowered temperature level was optimized by blocking the hole of the boiler The optimized cogeneration hybrid system consumes $76Nm^3/h$ LNG to produce 150kW electricity compared to before optimization $103Nm^3/h$ LNG. The system was accurately evaluated and the result is following ; 90% total efficiency, below 10 ppm NOx, 50ppm CO, 25ppm HC. The cogeneration hybrid system can meet the current NOx level and exhaust gas regulation. It can achieve the clean combustion gas and efficient cogeneration system.

Optimum Synthesis Conditions of Coating Slurry for Metallic Structured De-NOx Catalyst by Coating Process on Ship Exhaust Gas (선박 배연탈질용 금속 구조체 기반 촉매 제조를 위한 코팅슬러리 최적화)

  • To reduce the environmental pollution by $NO_x$ from ship engine, International maritime organization (IMO) announced Tier III regulation, which is the emmision regulation of ship's exhaust gas in Emission control area (ECA). Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process is the most commercial $De-NO_x$ system in order to meet the requirement of Tier III regulation. In generally, commercial ceramic honeycomb SCR catalyst has been installed in SCR reactor inside marine vessel engine. However, the ceramic honeycomb SCR catalyst has some serious issues such as low strength and easy destroution at high velocity of exhaust gas from the marine engine. For these reasons, we design to metallic structured catalyst in order to compensate the defects of the ceramic honeycomb catalyst for applying marine SCR system. Especially, metallic structured catalyst has many advantages such as robustness, compactness, lightness, and high thermal conductivity etc. In this study, in order to support catalyst on metal substrate, coating slurry is prepared by changing binder. we successfully fabricate the metallic structured catalyst with strong adhesion by coating, drying, and calcination process. And we carry out the SCR performance and durability such as sonication and dropping test for the prepared samples. The MFC01 shows above 95% of $NO_x$ conversion and much more robust and more stable compared to the commercial honeycomb catalyst. Based on the evaluation of characterization and performance test, we confirm that the proposed metallic structured catalyst in this study has high efficient and durability. Therefore, we suggest that the metallic structured catalyst may be a good alternative as a new type of SCR catalyst for marine SCR system.

Analysis of Air Pollutant Emissions from Agricultural Machinery in South Korea (국내의 농업기계에 의해 배출되는 대기 오염 물질 분석)

  • From 2019 onwards, more stringent regulations (from Stage 4 to Stage 5) are to be implemented in Europe in order to reduce the air pollutant emissions. In South Korea, the government authorities started to make new regulation to meet the European regulation. As a first step, the air pollutant emissions such as CO, NOx, SOx, TSP, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, VOC, $NH_3$ by agricultural machinery were analyzed based on CAPSS inventory along with the analysis in the general aspect in this study. Three levels of analysis was conducted each in agricultural machinery aspect along with in the general aspect. Per agricultural tractor, all kinds of the air pollutant emissions decreased by 25, 25, 99, 25, 25, 25, 25% for the CO, NOx, SOx, TSP, $PM_{10}$, VOC, $NH_3$ emissions each from the year 2000 to the year 2014. Per combine harvester, all kinds of the air pollutant emissions decreased by 63, 63, 91, 63, 63, 63, 63% for the CO, NOx, SOx, TSP, $PM_{10}$, VOC, $NH_3$ emissions each from the year 2000 to the year 2014.
