Thermal Caracteristics of the Automobile Exhaust gas based Heat exchanger with various Exhaust gas Temperature and Mass flow rate (자동차 배기가스 유량 및 온도 변화에 따른 열전발전용 열교환기 발열량 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the thermal characteristics of an automobile exhaust-based heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation with various exhaust gas mass flow rates and temperatures. The heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation has a square-type pin installed inside, so the maximum amount of heat can be transferred to the thermoelectric element from the heat energy coming from the automobile exhaust gas. The exhaust gas mass flow rate changed from 0.01, to 0.02, to 0.03 kg/s, and the exhaust gas temperature changed from 400, to 450, to 500, to 550, to $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. A numerical simulation was conducted by using the commercial program ANSYS CFX v17.0. Consequently, the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger is determined according to the flow rate of the exhaust gas. When the mass flow rate of the exhaust gas increased, the pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger increased, but the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet of the heat exchanger and the outlet did not vary with the exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in order to obtain the maximum surface temperature from the heat exchanger, the exhaust gas mass flow rate should be lower, and the exhaust gas temperature should be higher.

  • Various researches have been conducted for the reduction of NOx at the combustion furnace and exhaust gas recirculation method is commonly used technology for NOx reduction. The present research adopted coanda nozzles at the outside pipes of furnace to entrain the exhaust gas for the exhaust gas recirculation and the mixed gas was ejected to the tangential direction to cause the swirl flow in the furnace. The combustion flow characteristics in the exhaust gas recirculation burner with coanda nozzle has been elucidated by analyzing the swirl flow streamlines, temepraure and reaction rate distribution in the furnace. The exhaust gas entrained flow rate has been investigated by changing the excess air factor and coanda nozzle gap and the exhaust gas entrained flow rate increased with the increase of excess air factor and it decreased with the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The mean temperature at the exit plane of exhaust gas decreased with the excess air factor and it was little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The NOx mass fraction at the exhaust gas exit plane remarkably decreased with the excess air factor and it was also little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap.

  • An aftertreatment device which reduce exhaust gas of natural gas vehicle(NGV), NGV catalyst has important meaning as to reduce the exhaust emission. In this study, the characteristics of NGV catalyst were investigated and the effect parameters of NGV catalyst were analyzed and were predicted by changing the various parameters such as temperature, and gas concentration. The conversion efficiency of NGV catalyst converter was also predicted by Pd-loading, mass flow rate and gas composition.

  • The experimental study was carried out for the diffusion flame characteristics of second stage combustor with the variations of temperature and supplying rate of hot exhaust gas from first stage combustor. It also examined the flame structure and NOx formation of the second stage combustor in which the fuel(natural gas) is supplying into the mixture of oxygen hot exhaust gas from first stage combustor. The results show that the increasement of temperature and flow rate of exhaust gas lead to increase the NOx up to 30ppm with 19% $O_2$ condition

Mixer design for improving the injection uniformity of the reduction agent in SCR system

  • In this paper, we propose a method to optimize the geometry and installation position of the mixer in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system by computational fluid dynamic(CFD). Using the commercial CFD software of CFD-ACE+, the flow dynamics of the flue gas was numerically analyzed for improving the injection uniformity of the reduction agent. Numerical analysis of the mixed gas heat flow into the upstream side of the primary SCR catalyst layer was performed when the denitrification facility was operated. The characteristics such as the flow rate, temperature, pressure loss and ammonia concentration of the mixed gas consisting of the flue gas and the ammonia reducing gas were examined at the upstream of the catalyst layer of SCR. The temperature difference on the surface of the catalyst layer is very small compared to the flow rate of the exhaust gas, and the temperature difference caused by the reducing gas hardly occurs because the flow rate of the reducing gas is very small. When the mixed gas is introduced into the SCR reactor, there is a slight tendency toward one wall. When the gas passes through the catalyst layer having a large pressure loss, the flow angle of the exhaust gas changes because the direction of the exhaust gas changes toward a smaller flow. Based on the uniformity of the flow rate of the mixed gas calculated at the SCR, it is judged that the position of the test port reflected in the design is proper.

  • Internal combustion engines release 30~40% of the energy from fossil fuels into the atmosphere in the form of exhaust gases. By utilizing this waste heat, plenty of energy can be conserved in the auto industry. Thermoelectric generation is one way of transforming the energy from engine's exhaust gases into electricity in a vehicle. The thermoelectric generators located on the exhaust pipe have been developed for vehicle applications. Different experiments with thermoelectric generators have been conducted under various test conditions as following examples: hot gas temperature, hot gas mass flow rate, coolant temperature, and coolant mass flow rate. The experimental results have shown that the generated electrical power increases significantly with the temperature difference between the hot and the cold side of the thermoelectric generator and the gas flow rate of the hot-side heat exchanger. In addition, the gas temperature of the hot-side heat exchanger decreases with the length of the thermoelectric generator, especially at a low gas flow rate.

Characteristics of Entrainment Flow Rate in a Coanda Nozzle with or without Coaxial Contractor (코안다 노즐에서 중심 축소관 유무에 따른 유입량 특성)

  • A MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustion, which is effective in the reduction of NOx, is considerably affected by the recirculation flow rate of hot exhaust gas to the combustion furnace. The present study used a coanda nozzle for the exhaust gas recirculation in a MILD combustor. A numerical analysis was accomplished to elucidate the effect of exhaust gas entrainment toward the furnace with or without a coaxial contractor. The result of the present CFD analysis showed that the entrainment mass flow rate without a coaxial contractor had 18% larger than that with a coaxial contractor when the mixed gas outlet pressure was ambient pressure. On the other hand, if the outlet pressure increased, the mass flow rate with a contractor was larger than that without a contractor. It could be analysed by the entrainment driving force composed with the nozzle throat pressure, inlet and outlet pressures and flow cross sectional area.

A Study on Flow Characteristics of a Separate Triangular Bar Differential Pressure Flow Meter for Measuring Exhaust Flow Rate of Diesel Engine (디젤엔진 배기 가스 유량 측정용 삼각 분리 막대형 차압유량계 유량 특성 연구)

  • A separate triangular bar type differential pressure flow meter was developed for measuring exhaust gas flow rate from Diesel engine. Three kinds of the separate triangular bar flow meters whose aerodynamic angles are different one another are made and evaluated, respectively. The experimental results show that an aerodynamic shape has a effect on the pressure difference between upstream and downstream at the flow meter, that is, the thinner the shape of the separate triangular bar flow meter is, the smaller the pressure difference at the flow meter is. The separate triangular bar type flow meter was calibrated at both cold and high temperature of the gas flow. A burner system was designed for raising the gas temperature and it was well operated in controlling the gas temperature. An empirical correlation between mass flow rate and differential pressure at the separate triangular bar flow meter was obtained and the empirical correlation was also corrected by the gas temperature.

  • This study has been conducted to improve coolant flow pattern in the gasoline engine. Flow field has been calculated for the coolant passage mainly around the exhaust ports and valves. For the original model, a flow stagnant region has existed between exhaust valves of the second cylinder. To improve coolant flow characteristics, coolant passage area has been re-modeled and optimized. Furthermore, for the improved coolant core model, coolant passage under the exhaust manifold has been added to reduce exhaust-gas temperature. It was found that the flow through a gasket plays a critical role for the flow in the cylinder head and around exhaust valves. Finally, coolant flow around exhaust valves and in the cylinder head has been improved in terms of flow rate distribution.

An Experimental Study for Performance Evaluation of a Ceramic Heat Exchanger (세라믹 열교환기의 성능평가를 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Exhaust gas of an industrial furnace used at such as metallurgy or ceramic manufacturing usually contains thermal energy with high temperature which can be recycled by heat exchanger. However, when the temperature of the exhaust gas is high such as more than $1,000^{\circ}C$, ordinary metallic heat exchanger cannot fully recover the heat due to the limitation of operating temperature depending on the material property. In the present study, a compact ceramic heat exchanger of cross flow type is introduced and evaluated by heat exchange rate and operating temperature. The ceramic heat exchanger can endure the gas temperature more than $1,300^{\circ}C$, and its volumetric heat exchanging rate exceeds 1 MW/$m^3$. The experimental data is also compared with the previous numerical result which shows reasonable agreement. Meanwhile, the gas leakage rate is measured to be about 3~4%, and heat loss to environmental air is about 23~26% of the fuel energy.
