CFD interpretation of gas flow around Ship's Funnel and Optimum Design Criterion (선박 연돌 형상이 배기가스 흐름에 미치는 영향과 연돌 설계)

  • Exhaust gases of a vessel from a main engine, a diesel generator and an incinerator contain very harmful substances like soot, $SO_2$ and NOx. Careful design of funnel shape is required to prevent those harmful exhaust gases from influencing on accommodation and a fan room. Meanwhile, the exhaust gases are also hot enough to damage electronic devices like radar. Therefore the funnel design should be considered so that electronic devices are not directly exposed to the exhaust gas in the strong stern wind. This study may propose guidelines of optimum design criterion for the anti-thermal damage design of the electronic devices and anti-recirculating design of harmful exhaust gas near the accommodation. From CFD analyses, we can understand that the major factors affecting the exhaust gas dispersion are the large scale mixing by separation vortices and the sluggish flow in the recirculation region. We hope that the funnel flow analysis around ship's funnel is used for practical optimum funnel design to minimize the exhaust gas dispersion by adjusting the funnel shape, the position of the exhaust pipe, the shape of bulwark, the exhaust direction of air ventilated an engine room and the angle of the exhaust pipe.

  • The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the thermal characteristics of an automobile exhaust-based heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation with various exhaust gas mass flow rates and temperatures. The heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation has a square-type pin installed inside, so the maximum amount of heat can be transferred to the thermoelectric element from the heat energy coming from the automobile exhaust gas. The exhaust gas mass flow rate changed from 0.01, to 0.02, to 0.03 kg/s, and the exhaust gas temperature changed from 400, to 450, to 500, to 550, to $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. A numerical simulation was conducted by using the commercial program ANSYS CFX v17.0. Consequently, the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger is determined according to the flow rate of the exhaust gas. When the mass flow rate of the exhaust gas increased, the pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger increased, but the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet of the heat exchanger and the outlet did not vary with the exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in order to obtain the maximum surface temperature from the heat exchanger, the exhaust gas mass flow rate should be lower, and the exhaust gas temperature should be higher.

  • In this study an experimental research has been conducted to reduce NOx and smoke emission from diesel engine exhaust gas simultaneously by application of corona discharge type electrostatic precipitator(ESP). The ESP was installed between exhaust gas silencer and outlet terminal of exhaust gas system. The operating conditions as input parameters taken in this experiment were corona power input, gas velocity and equivalence ratio of gas. It was found that the corona discharge type ESP has notable effect on reducing smoke in exhaust gas but appeared to bring slight effect on reducing NOx.

  • An ejector is designed for the purpose of engine bay cooling. The primary flow of the ejector is the exhaust gas of the PW206C turboshaft engine. The mass flow of secondary flow is calculated by using the approximate analytic equation. And the effect of exhaust gas flow on the fuselage surface is investigated by using the Fluent Code. Three types of exhaust duct shape were compared in the viewpoint of surface temperature and aerodynamic drag. As a result, exhaust duct shape P3 shows minimum interference of exhaust gas and fuselage and minimum increment of drag among the three candidate shapes.

  • The effect of recirculated exhaust gas on exhaust emissions under four kinds of nozzle tip with the different fuel consumption rate are experimentally investigated by using an once-through boiler with FGR system. The purpose of this study is to develop the FGR control system for reducing NOx in a boiler. Intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and equivalence ratio are applied to discuss the effect of FGR rate on exhaust emissions at various fuel consumption rates. It is found that NOx emissions are decreased, while soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the rise of equivalence ratio as FGR rates are elevated.

  • A diesel engine has been widely used for ship and industry power because it has many merits of high thermal efficiency, reliability and durability. However its exhaust gas is harmful to human and air environment. Reducing the hurtful exhaust gas emissions, the study of the gas flow in the inlet and exhaust manifold is in progress in the world. In this paper we modeled the gas flow as one dimensional isentropic flow to predict the gas flow in the exhaust manifold. The method of characteristics was used for the model calculation, and the calculated results were compared with the experimental ones.

  • An on-board monitoring system for an automobile emission gas has a test chamber remote from the automobile's engine exhaust gas stream: apparatus for supplying the chamber with sampled exhaust gases. A single hydrocarbon sensor exposed to the exhaust gas in the chamber to render a signal responsive to the hydrocarbon. The conductive ions in emission gas was checked by the HC sensor in test chamber. A preferred application includes hydrocarbons in an automotive exhaust gas stream by exposing a transition porous alumina($Al_{2}O_{3}$) ceramic based sensor to the same exhaust gas stream. By combining the electrical signal, a measure of hydrocarbons can be provided.

  • Despite the increasingly stringent automotive emissions regulations, the impact of vehicle emissions on air pollution remains large. In addition, since the issue of emission of more exhaust gas than the exhaust gas measured in the test room when the vehicle passing the exhaust gas regulation standard is run on the actual road, many countries studied and introduced gas regulations about Real Driving Emission using Portable Emission Measurement System. At present, Korea regulations restrict the number of NOx and PN in diesel vehicles. In the case of gasoline vehicles, there is no regulation on emission gas, but there is a problem of continuing automobile exhaust gas problems and a large amount of gasoline GDI vehicle's PN emission. So research and interest are increasing due to this problem. In this study, characteristics of exhaust gas depending on changes of ambient temperature were analyzed among various factors affecting exhaust gas measurement of gasoline vehicles. As a result, at the low temperature test, the lower the ambient temperature, the more the exhaust gas was emitted. At ordinary temperature test, no specific tendency was observed due to changes of ambient temperature.

  • The post injection effect to enhance aftertreatment devices' performance is essential to meet future stringent emission standards by controlling exhaust gas temperature and emission pollutants. The test has been made with commercial common rail diesel engine by post injection manipulation, to optimize exhaust gas temperature while guarantee low fuel penalty.
