An Experimental Study on Exhaust Emission Characteristics by Various Oxygenated Additives in Diesel Engine (디젤기관에서 다종 함산소연료 첨가에 의한 배기배출물 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this paper, the effects of oxygen component in blended fuel on the exhaust emissions have been investigated far direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for th? commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuels which have three kinds of fuels and various mixed rates. And, it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbons(C$_1$∼ C$\_$6/) in exhaust gases using gas chromatography to seek the reason far remarkable reduction of smoke emission on various oxygenated fuels. This study carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel fuel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether), MTBE(methyl tart-butyl ether) and EGBE(ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether). The results of this study show that individual hydrocarbons as well as total hydrocarbon of oxygenated fuel are reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel.

  • Recently, our world is faced with very serious and hard problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated fur direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenate blended fuel which has three kinds of mixed ratio. And, it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbon components from Cl to C6 in exhaust gas using gas chromatography to seek the reason far remarkable reduction of smoke emission. This study was carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel feel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether) 5%. The results of this study show that individual hydrocarbon(C1∼C6) as well as total hydrocarbon of oxygenated fuel is reduced remarkably than that of diesel fuel.

  • In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated fur direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuel which has seven kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated. Ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) contains oxygen component 27% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of mono-ether group that the smoke emission and unburned hydrocarbons of EGBE is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and cooled EGR method.

  • The present study describes the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in compression ignition engines using diesel-gasoline dual fuel. For investigating combustion characteristics, diesel fuel was injected directly in a single-cylinder compression ignition engine with a common-rail injection system and gasoline fuel was injected into a premixed chamber installed in an intake port. In order to investigate exhaust emission characteristics, exhaust gas was measured by emission analyzer and smoke meter. The experimental results showed that cases of diesel-gasoline dual fuel combustion exhibited extended ignition delay and reduced peak combustion pressure compared to those of directly injected diesel fuel cases. Furthermore, premixed gasoline-air mixture reduced NOx emissions due to low peak of rate of heat release(ROHR).

Exhaust Emissions Characteristics of a Small Diesel Engine using Rice-bran Oil (미강유 적용 소형 디젤엔진의 배기배출물 특성)

  • It seems possible, by use of vegetable oils, to solve the pollution problem caused by the exhaust gas from diesel-engine vehicles. Recently vegetable oils has received considerable attention as an alternative and clean energy source to the foreseeable depletion of world oil supplies. The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the characteristics of exhaust emissions of a small diesel engine using light oil, rice-bran oil, heated rice-bran oil, rice-bran oil treated with ultrasonic energy. SO$_2$ emission from the pure and the treated rice-bran oils was not detected at speeds hgher than 1,800 rpm while that from the light oil was detected at all the speeds at 4/4 load. NOx emission form these vegetable oils was generally higher compared to that from the light oil for most of the test conditions. tendency opposite to that of NOx emission. The data obtained in this experiment may be applicable for the desist of small diesel engine using the alternative fuels.

And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission and brake specific fuel consumption rate have been investigated. Dimethyl carbonate(DMC) contains oxygen component 53.3% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of carbonate group that the smoke emission of DMC is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and EGR method.

  • The post injection effect to enhance aftertreatment devices' performance is essential to meet future stringent emission standards by controlling exhaust gas temperature and emission pollutants.   • An on-board monitoring system for an automobile emission gas has a test chamber remote from the automobile's engine exhaust gas stream: apparatus for supplying the chamber with sampled exhaust gases. A single hydrocarbon sensor exposed to the exhaust gas in the chamber to render a signal responsive to the hydrocarbon. The conductive ions in emission gas was checked by the HC sensor in test chamber. A preferred application includes hydrocarbons in an automotive exhaust gas stream by exposing a transition porous alumina($Al_{2}O_{3}$) ceramic based sensor to the same exhaust gas stream. By combining the electrical signal, a measure of hydrocarbons can be provided.

Trend of exhaust emission control of diesel engine vehicles in Korea (국내 경유자동차 배출물 규제동향)

  • This short report describes the trend of exhaust emission control of the diesel engine vehicles in Korea, which originally was motivated from the newly proposed Emission Control Regulation of Diesel Engine Vehicles possible to be activated in 1991 by Korean Environmental Protection Agency. This short survey report has been prepared by the special working group of The Korea Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) on this particular subject. This report includes (1) estimation of portions of contribution of diesel engine vehicle emission to total air pollution, (2) comparison of proposals of new articles/regulations/laws in Korea with those of other selected countries such as USA, European countries, and Japan, (3) comparison of vehical emission control regulations in Korea with those in other selected countries, (4) technical aspects of possibilities of reduction of diesel engine vehicle emissions, (5) additional administrational aspects of technology development program, (6) social impact resulted from the severe emission control regulation on diesel engine vehicles, and (7) proposals, prepared by the special working group of the KSAE, on the emission control regulation of diesel engine vehicles, which can possibly bring better cleaner air released from the air pollution resulted from diesel engine exhaust emissions in real sense with minimal financial contribution, with optimal technological efforts, with less social impacts, within five to ten year period.

  • This paper investigates the effect of oxygen composition in mixed fuel on the exhaust emissions for the direct injection diesel engine. These effects were tested to estimate the change in engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics when commercial diesel fuel and oxygenates blended fuels at a certain fuel and mixed ratio are used. Individual hydrocarbons $(C_1-C_6)$ in exhaust gases, as well as the total amount of hydrocarbons, were analyzed by using gas chromatography to find the mechanism by which smoke emission was remarkably reduced for various oxygenated fuels. The chromatograms between a diesel fuel and a diesel fuel blended DGM (diethylene glycol dimethyl ether), MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether) and EGBE (ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether) were compared. The results showed that the number of individual hydrocarbons as well as the total number of hydrocarbons of oxygenated fuel reduced more remarkably than those of diesel fuel.
