The results of laboratory experiments with microcosms containing Daphnia magna and Chlorella vulgaris demonstrated decrease of the structural exergy of artificial communities after the addition of model toxicants phenol and cobalt chloride. Structural exergy changes were more expressed than changes of components biomasses and total biomass of the community. It once more points to the possibility of the use structural exergy as ecosystem health reflecting parameter.
In this study, the exergy which could be reflected on energetic and economic value was used to assess on heat tariff of district heating system instead of enthalpy. Exergy is difficult to apply directly to present heat charge system because of complex calculation. Therefore, the difference between supply and return temperature was converted to the exergy temperature difference for easily calculating the amount of heat. As a result of exergy analysis for a DH substation, the exergy temperature difference were not affected on surrounding temperature and pressure loss. Supply temperature, maximum difference between supply temperature and return temperature had a main effect on the exergy temperature difference. The new heat charge of a DH user was slightly reduced in winter compared with previous heat charge. Heat charges in other seasons were almost same. It is thought that heat tariff using exergy will be appropriate in terms of both DH supplier and consumer.

In this study, the exergy that can be reflected in the energetic and economic values was used to assess the heat tariff of a district heating (DH) system instead of the enthalpy. It is difficult to directly apply the exergy to the current heat-charge system because of the complicated calculation; therefore, the difference between the supply and return temperatures was converted to the exergy-temperature difference for the ease of the heat-amount calculation. As a result of the exergy analysis for a DH substation, the exergy-temperature difference did not affect the surrounding temperature and pressure loss. The supply temperature and the maximum difference between the supply temperature and the return temperature exerted the main effect on the exergy-temperature difference. The new heat charge of a DH user was slightly reduced in winter compared with the previous charge, but the heat charges in the other seasons are almost the same. It is concluded from the assessment of the heat tariff for which the exergy is used that this tariff is more feasible for both DH suppliers and consumers compared with enthalpy.
A light water nuclear Reactor has been exergy analyzed, and the rate of irreversible exergy loss and exergy destruction is calculated for each of its components. The ratio of these losses compared to the total input exergy loss is calculated, which shows that most irreversible losses occur in the reactors, turbines, steam generators, respectively, as well as in the downstream operations. The main aim of this paper is to optimize the power plant using an innovative firefly algorithm and then to propose a novel strategy to improve the overall performance of the plant. As shown in the results, the exergy destruction rate of the plant decreased by 1.18% using the firefly method, and the exergy efficiency of the plant reached 29.3% comparing to the operational amount of 28.99%. Also, the results of the firefly optimization process compared to the Genetic algorithm and gravitational search algorithm to study the accuracy of the model for exergy analysis fitness problems in the power plants and the results of this comparison has shown that the results are nearly similar in the mentioned methods. However, the firefly is faster and more accurate in limited iterations.

Important factors in evaluating solar collcetor efficiency are solar radiation, temperature and flow rate of the working fluid. The effects of these factors on the energy and the exergy gained by water, the working fluid, from the collector were analyzed. The results indicated that the collector efficiency and the energy and the exergy gained by the water from the collcetor increased with the increase of solar radiation. According to the exergy analysis, as the water temperature at the inlet of the collector increased, the exergy gained by the water increased while the energy gained by the water decreased. The water temperature at the outlet of the collector could be calculated with a mean error of 2.8%, and the energy and the exergy could be calculated theoretically with mean errors of 16.8% and 19.1%, respcetively.

The exergy method is used for analysis and evaluation of the cryogenic nitrogen production process which is operated by expansion turbene and liquid nitrogen. The exergy loss and thermodynamic effeciency are calculated for the each process. Also the operating efficiency and the exergy distribution are examined for each unit of proces. The optimal conditions to minimize the exergy loss of nitrogen column are found that nitrogen recovery ratio is maximum and operating pressure is 5.0 kg/cm2g. The exergy method can be used to design a plant and to evaluate its process.
The distillation column is one of large energy consumable units in the cryogenic air separation process and the accurate energy analysis of this unit is necessary for choice of energy saving process. In this work, the energy method was adopted for energy analysis of a cryogenic nitrogen distillation column. In order to designing the energy saving distillation column, the exergy distribution of feed air, exergy efficiency and exergy loss for process condition was investigated and the optimal process condition to minimize the exergy loss was found. The result from this work can be used as a guideline for the choice of the process design conditions and efficiency improvement of cryogenic distillation column.
Benthic macro invertebrate communities were collected at six different sampling sites in the Musucheon stream in Korea from July 2006 to July 2007, and ecological exergy values were calculated based on five different functional feeding groups (collector-gatherer, collector-filterer, predator, scrapper, and shredder) of benthic macro invertebrates. Each sampling site was categorized to three stream types (perennial, intermittent and drought) based on the water flow condition. Exergy values were low at all study sites right after a heavy rain and relatively higher in the perennial stream type than in the intermittent or the drought stream type. Self-Organizing Map (SOM), unsupervised artificial neural network, was implemented to pattern spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological exergy of the study sites. SOM classified samples into four clusters. The classification reflected the effects of floods and droughts on benthic macroinvertebrate communities, and was mainly related with the stream types of the sampling sites. Exergy values of each functional feeding group also responded differently according to the different stream types. Finally, the results showed that exergy is an effective ecological indicator, and patterning changes of exergy using SOM is an effective way to evaluate target ecosystems.
An exergy analysis is carried out for the regenerative wet-compression Brayton cycle which has a potential of enhanced thermal efficiency owing to the reduced compression power consumption and the recuperation of exhaust energy. Using the analysis model, the effects of pressure ratio and water injection ratio are investigated on the exergy efficiency of system, exergy destruction ratio for each component of the system, and exergy loss ratio due to exhaust gas. The results of computation for the typical cases show that the regenerative wet-compression gas turbine cycle can make a notable enhancement of exergy efficiency. The injection of water results in a decrease of exergy loss of exhaust gas and an increase of net power output.

A multi-type heat pump controls the mass flow rate of the working fluid to cope with variable heat loads when it is under dynamic load condition. This paper describes the exergy analysis associated with the unsteady response of a heat pump. First, a basic heat pump cycle is examined at a steady state to show the general trends of exergy variations in each process of the cycle. Entropy generation issue for the heat exchangers is discussed to optimize the heat pump cycle. Secondly, the performance of the inverter-driven heat pump is compared to that of the conventional one when the heat load is variable. Thirdly, the exergy destruction rate of the heat pump with On/Off operation is calculated by simulating the thermodynamic states of the working fluid in the condenser and the evaporator. The inefficiency of On/Off operation during the transient period is quantitatively described by the exergy analysis.
