Suppressing breast cancer by exercise: consideration to animal models and exercise protocols

  • [Purpose] Exercise is thought to have a significant effect on chemotherapy, and previous studies have reported that exercise can increase patient survival. Thus, in this review, we aimed to summarize various animal models to analyze the effects of exercise on breast cancer. [Methods] We summarized types of breast cancer animal models from various reports and analyzed the effects of exercise on anti-cancer factors in breast cancer animal models. [Results] This review aimed to systematically investigate if exercise could aid in suppressing breast cancer. Our study includes (a) increase in survival rate through exercise; (b) the intensity of exercise should be consistent and increased; (c) a mechanism for inhibiting carcinogenesis through exercise; (d) effects of exercise on anti-cancer function. [Conclusion] This review suggested the necessity of a variety of animal models for preclinical studies prior to breast cancer clinical trials. It also provides evidence to support the view that exercise plays an important role in the prevention or treatment of breast cancer by influencing anticancer factors.

Comparison of the Surface Electromyographic Signal of Progressive Resistance Increase and Progressive Resistance Decrease Exercise (점진적 저항증가와 점진적 저항감소 운동에서의 표면 근전도 신호 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to compare the signal characteristics of surface electromyography (EMG) between progressive resistive increase exercise (PRIE) and progressive resistive decrease exercise (PRDE). Methods: Forty healthy male subjects were randomly assigned to either the PRIE group or the PRDE group. Subjects participated in the PRIE and PRDE methods, with 10 RM for each subject. EMG activity was recorded from the rectus femoris muscle. Outcome data were collected for both groups pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, then at 5 and 10 minutes post-exercise. Repeated measures 2-way ANOVA was used to determine the statistical difference of the root mean square (RMS) in EMG activity. Results: We showed that RMS values, when compared with pre-exercise, were decreased immediately after exercise and were increased at 5 and 10 minutes after exercise (p<0.05). The RMS values were not significantly different between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: These results can indicate that both the PRIE and PRDE protocols will be improve strength with equivalent efficacy. Further studies are needed to address exercise duration, frequency of exercise sessions, and rest times than the PRIE and PRDE protocols with regard to the changes in strength improvement without a large amount of muscle fatigue.

Effects of Uphill Exercise on Digestible Energy Intake and Energy Expenditure during Exercise in Yearling Horses

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the digestible energy intake and energy expenditure in yearling horses on different training protocols (uphill- and level-track exercise training protocols). Twenty-four thoroughbred yearlings (12 males and 12 females, aged 27.0$\pm$0.9 months) were divided into two groups based on their training on two different tracks: the uphill (with a gradient of about 3%) training group (uphill training) and the level training group (level training). The digestible energy (DE) intake and energy expenditure (EE) during exercise were measured in both the groups. It was found that the DE intake in the uphill training and the level training groups was 5.1$\pm$3.1 and 36.9$\pm$4.8 Mcal/day, respectively. The EE during exercise in the two groups was 3.05$\pm$0.51 and 2.07 $\pm$0.56 Mcal, respectively. Thus, there was a significant difference in the EE (p<0.05), but not in the DE intake between the animals of the two training groups. The EE for a given intensity of exercise was greater in the uphill training group than in the level training group, but the DE intake was not affected by the exercise intensity. The DE intake was not generally affected by the intensity of exercise in this study, but a daily negative gain of body weight was observed in the uphill training group, particularly in the females. Thus, the energy requirement may be higher in yearlings undergoing uphill training than in those undergoing level training.

Variability in physical therapy protocols following total shoulder arthroplasty

  • Background: Physical therapy (PT) plays an important role in the recovery of function following anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). While several PT protocols have been published for these patients, there is no standardized protocol for aTSA rehabilitation. This lack of standardization may lead to confusion between patients and physicians, possibly resulting in suboptimal outcomes. This study examines how PT protocols provided by academic orthopedic surgery programs vary regarding therapeutic goals and activities following aTSA. Methods: PT protocols for aTSA available online from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited orthopedic surgery programs were included for review. Each protocol was analyzed to evaluate it for differences in recommendation of length of immobilization, range of motion (ROM) goals, start time for and progression of therapeutic exercises, and timing for return to functional activity. Results: Of 175 accredited programs, 25 (14.2%) had protocols publicly available, programs (92%) recommended sling immobilization outside of therapy for an average of 4.4±2.0 weeks. Most protocols gave recommendations on starting active forward flexion (24 protocols, range 1-7 weeks), external rotation (22 protocols, range 1-7 weeks), and internal rotation (18 protocols, range 4-7 weeks). Full passive ROM was recommended at 10.8±5.7 weeks, and active ROM was 13.3±3.9 weeks, on average. ROM goals were inconsistent among protocols, with significant variations in recommended ROM and resistance exercise start times. Only 13 protocols (52%) gave recommendations on resuming recreational activities (mean, 17.4±4.4 weeks). Conclusions: Publicly available PT protocols for aTSA rehabilitation are highly variable. Effect of Transient Isokinetic Exercise on Cardiac Autonomic Nervous Modulation and Muscle Properties (일회성 등속성 운동이 심장 자율신경 조절 및 근속성에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to identify the influence of transient isokinetic exercise on cardiac autonomic modulation and muscle properties in healthy male subjects. Methods : Twenty-eight healthy males underwent isokinetic exercise of both knee joints using a Biodex systems 3 isokinetic dynamometer with an angular velocity of 60 °/sec. The changes in activity of the autonomic nervous system, as determined by heart rate variability (HRV), and in muscle properties were evaluated at three times: pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 10 min post-exercise. Results : The time domain analysis of HRV revealed significant changes in the beat count and mean and minimal heart rate (HR) measured at pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). The beat count and mean HR were markedly increased immediately post-exercise compared to pre-exercise, but then significantly decreased at 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). All parameters of the frequency domain were significantly altered by isokinetic exercise (p<.01). The low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio, as an index for the sympathovagal balance, was elevated by exercise and remained at a similarly high level at 10 min post-exercise (p<.01). The muscle properties of rectus femoris were changed as follows: Muscle tone and stiffness were significantly increased between pre-exercise and immediately post-exercise (p<.001), and between pre-exercise and at 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). Whereas, the elasticity showed no significant change. Conclusion : These results demonstrated that transient isokinetic exercise could induce changes in cardiac autonomic control and muscle properties. In particular, up-regulation of LF/HF ratio after exercise signifies thus enhanced sympathetic modulation by isokinetic exercise. Therefore, it is needed to understand the cardiovascular risks that may arise during isokinetic exercise for providing the basic evidence to establish appropriate isokinetic exercise protocols as effective rehabilitation exercises.

Effect of Swimming Exercise Training and Gastrodia Elata Blume Extract Administration on Oxidative Enzyme Activity in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rat (수중운동과 천마(天麻) 추출물 투여가 streptozotocin으로 유도한 백서의 산화적 효소에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of protective effectness of swimming exercise and Gastrodia elata blume oral administration against beta-cell damage in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats. The animals were divided into five groups: the normal group(n=10), the STZ-induced diabetes group(n=10), the STZ-induced diabetes and moderate-intensity exercise group(n=10), the STZ-induced diabetes Gastrodia elata blume(300 mg/kg) oral administration group(n=10), the STZ-induced diabetes and moderate-intensity exercise and Gastrodia elata blume(300 mg/kg) oral administration group(n=10). Animals in the exercise groups were made to swim moderate swimming exercise protocols once a day for 4 consecutive weeks. Serum glucose concentration and insulin level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured in serum. Swimming exercise and Gastrodia elata blume extract administration has shown anti-diabetic effect probably through decreasing serum glucose and insulin level and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity.

  • Scince $^{201}$TI was introduced as a myocardial perfusion imaging agent in the early 1970s, scintigraphic evaluation of myocardial perfusion for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease is a valuable noninvasive diagnostic imaging modality. Stress radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging is widely accepted to have high diagnostic and prognostic use in the assessment of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease. With wise use of this nonivasive imaging technique, more patients are referred for stress perfusion imaging. Until now various protocols for stress testing and myocardial imaging were developed and used in worldwide. This article presented various protocols of stress testing and myocardial imaging for clinical use.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of treadmill walking exercise on the BMD (Bone Mineral Density) and BMI (Body Mass Index) of middle-aged women in their forties. Method: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used for this study. The experiment was conducted for 10 weeks from May 17 to July 25, 2004 with 29 middle-aged women in their forties, who were assigned to a walking exercise group (16) or a control group (13). The experimental group had not exercised regularly before participating in this program. The control group received no exercise treatment during the research period. The BMD and BMI were measured with peripheral dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and bioelectrical impidence analysis, respectively. $X^2-test$ and Mann-Whitney U test with the SPSS version 11.0 program were used to analyze the data. Result: Treadmill walking exercise was effective for middle-aged women in increasing BMD and decreasing BMI. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate a need to develop walking exercise protocols for middle-aged women to help them achieve a healthy life.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss and analyze the effect of blood glucose on treadmill exercise, functional food and their combined treatment protocol on diabetic rats. These group were divided treadmill exercise group(n:12), functional food feeding group(n:12), treadmill exercise with functional food feeding group(n:12) and control group. The following results were obtained from this study. 1. The blood glucose level was showed significantly different in several group, treadmill exercise with functional food feeding group are most significantly on other group. 2. The inhibitory rate of body weight was not significantly different on each group. 3. The amount of feeding was not significantly in several group. 4. The Islets size and Connective tissue proliferation was showed significantly different except control group, treadmill exercise with functional food feeding group are more significantly than other group. These results show that treadmill exercise with functional food feeding and their several protocols can retard the setreptozotocin-induced dibetic rat.

Effects of Mat Pilates Exercise on Lower Extremity Function, Postural Balance, and Walking in the Older Women with Total Knee Arthroplasty

  • Objective: The rehabilitation protocols for functional recovery have been emphasized after total knee arthroplasty, and Pilates is in the spotlight as a safe and easily modified exercise method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mat Pilates exercise on lower extremity function, postural balance, and walking in the individuals with total knee arthroplasty. Design: One group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Eighteen older women with unilateral total knee arthroplasty was recruited in the study. The subjects were evaluated on lower extremity function, postural balance, and walking before and after mat Pilates exercise. All subject performed one hour mat Pilates exercise, 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Mat Pilates exercises were focused on core stability and lower extremity strengthening and, more dynamic movements were added to increase the difficulty of movements every two weeks. The lower extremity function was measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), knee joint position sense, and five times sit-to-stand test. Postural balance was assessed by single leg stance test, functional reach test, and timed up and go test. Walking was measured by OptoGait system to temporospatial parameter. Results: The lower extremity function, postural balance, and walking were significantly improved after mat Pilates exercise, except for five times sit-to-stand test (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the mat Pilates exercise was a useful method to improve lower extremity function, postural balance, and walking in the older women with unilateral total knee arthroplasty.
