The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of group exercise program on depression in the elders with dementia. Subjects of this research were selected from the patients of Hyoja hospital(Yongin, Korea). They were elders with dementia having minor to moderate degrees of cognitive function. Twenty-four subjects were randomly assigned into two groups, each with 12 people; exercise group and the control group. The control group only performed general physiotherapy, while the exercise group performed exercise program and general physiotherapy for 8 weeks. Depression of the exercise group and the control group were measured at baseline before the study, at 4 weeks, and at 8 weeks after the study. Depression was measured by Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korea Version(GDSSF-K). Firstly, when comparing the levels of depression within the same group, depression was significantly lower in the exercise group, after the group exercise program. However, depression of the control group did not show significant changes before or after the study. Secondly, when comparing the levels of depression of the control group and the exercise group, differences between the levels measured before the study and 8 weeks after the study, was a statistically significant decrease of depression. Thirdly, effects of group exercise program according to the applied period were analyzed showing 8 weeks of group exercise to be more beneficial than 4 weeks. People who performed continuous group exercise program showed decrease in depression compared to the absence of group exercise program. This can infer beneficial effects of group exercise program. Group exercise program had desirable influence on decreasing the level of depression.
Purpose: This research was conducted to compare the effects of drug therapy, physical therapy, and exercise on pain, disability, and depression in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods: The research design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 28 patients for the drug therapy & physical therapy, 24 patients for the drug therapy & exercise, and 22 patients for the physical therapy & exercise. Data was collected by MVAS, Oswestry disability questionnaires, and questionnaires of depression. It was analyzed by paired t-test for effectiveness, ANOVA, and Scheffe for comparison of the effects of the 3 experimental treatments, using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: There were no effects of drug therapy & physical therapy on pain, disability, and depression. However, there were effects of drug therapy & exercise and the physical therapy & exercise on pain, disability, and depression. The effects of physical therapy & exercise on pain, disability, and depression were the greatest, but there was no statistically significant differences between the drug therapy & exercise and the physical therapy & exercise. Conclusions: Exercise is regarded as a more effective and easily accessible nursing intervention to apply alone than drug therapy or physical therapy simultaneously in reducing pain, disability and depression.
Purpose: The study was performed to identify exercise self-efficacy, depression, and stress by the stage of change in exercise behavior in middle aged women. Method: The subjects consisted of 317 women residing in B city by convenience sampling. The collected data was analyzed by the SPSS/WIN program. Result: The subjects were distributed in each stage of exercise behavior change: There were 53 subjects in the pre-contemplation stage, 86 subjects in the contemplation stage, 88 subjects in the preparation stage, 51 subjects in the action stage and 39 subjects in the maintenance stage. Analysis of variance showed that exercise self-efficacy (F=39.9, p<.001), depression (F=5.58, p<.001), and stress (F=6.33, p<.001) were significantly associated with the stages of exercise behavior change. There was a significant negative correlation between the stage of change and depression, and the stage of change and stress, but a significant positive correlation between the stage of change and self- efficacy, depression and stress. Conclusion: This study identified that exercise self-efficacy, depression and stress were significant variables to explain a possible relationship with exercise stages of middle aged women. This study provides new information to influence the development of better health promotion and exercise intervention for middle aged women in the community.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the effect of aquatic exercise on balance and depression of stroke patients. Methods: For 12 participants with stroke, six members of the experimental group and six members of the control group were randomly selected and arranged. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) lower extremity aquatic pattern exercise was applied to the experimental group. On the other hand, participants in the control group performed PNF lower extremity pattern exercise on the ground. Both exercises were performed 30 minutes per day, five times per week, for a period of six weeks. Balance was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up to Go test (TUG). Depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies depression scale (CES-D). Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the experimental group showed significant difference for balance and depression after the experiment (p<0.05). In comparison between the two groups, the experimental group in which aquatic exercise was applied showed more significant change in balance and depression than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, aquatic exercise was proven to enhance the balance and decrease the depression of stroke patients.
Objectives : This study is to evaluate the efficacy of aromatherapy, relaxation therapy and exercise therapy on depression. Methods : Survey of on nonpharmacotherapies on depression - related articles was done through online paper databases from 1998 to 2010 published in Korean journals. Results : 1. We found 30 articles from 1998 to 2010 published in Korean journals: Aromatherapy(16), Relaxation therapy(6) and Exercise therapy(8). 2. 14 of the 16 articles on aromatherapy reported that aromatherapy was effective in the decrease of depression. 3. 5 of the 6 articles on relaxation therapy reported that relaxation therapy was effective in the decrease of depression. 4. 6 of the 8 articles on exercise therapy reported that exercise therapy was effective in the decrease of depression. Conclusions : In this study, it seems that aromatherapy, relaxation therapy and exercise therapy were effective on reducing depression.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between perceived exercise benefits/barriers, competence, depression, and wellness, and then to identify influencing factors on the wellness of traditional market traders. Methods: One hundred eight persons working in a traditional market participated in the study of questionnaire. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results: The scores were 2.82±0.66 for "perceived exercise benefits", 1.84±0.42 for "perceived exercise barriers", 4.68±1.56 for "competence", 9.60±7.56 for "depression", and 3.64±0.64 for "wellness". Regression analysis to identify factors affecting the wellness of traditional market traders showed that "perceived exercise benefits" was the most significant factor (β=.32, p<.001), followed by "competence" (β=.04, p=.009) and "depression" (β=.17, p=.039). The explanatory power of these variables for wellness of traditional market traders was 53%. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that perceived exercise benefits, competence and depression are significantly related to traditional market trader's wellness. Therefore, wellness programs should be developed to reduce depression and improve perceived exercise benefits and competence.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of aerobic exercise and combination exercise on physical fitness, body composition, and depression and to observe the relationship between obesity and depression. METHODS: A total of 40 obese people were divided into an aerobic exercise group ($n_1$=20) and a combination exercise group ($n_2$=20) that was performed swiss ball exercise and aerobic exercise. Each group exercised three times per week for eight weeks. Outcome measures were basic physical fitness, body composition, and depression. RESULTS: After completion of the exercise, there was a significant difference in overall physical fitness factors of percentage body fat (%body fat), strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance in the combination exercise group (p<.05). Strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance were more improved in the combination exercise group than aerobic exercise group (p<.05). However, changes of %body fat and psychological factor between the two groups were not significant. CONCLUSION: Combination exercise program has an effect on the solution of obesity in physical development and strength. Therefore, it seems to that use with better perform both aerobic exercise and Swiss ball exercise. In addition, the Swiss ball exercise, which is an easy, convenient and economical self-exercise that can be done at home, is recommended due to its positive effects on physical establishment and fitness.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of aquatic proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern exercise on the balance, gait ability, and depression in patients with chronic stroke. Methods: Thirty patients with chronic stroke were assigned randomly to an experimental (n=15) or control (n=15) group. The experimental group performed aquatic proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern exercise. The control group performed ground proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern exercise. Training was conducted once a day for 30 minutes, five days per week for six weeks. The balance ability was measured using the Berg balance scale. The gait ability was measured using the 10 Meter walk test. Depression was measured using the Beck depression inventory. Results: As a result of a comparison within groups, the experimental and control group showed a significant difference for balance, gait ability, and depression after the experiment (p<0.05). In a comparison between the two groups, the experimental group, in which aquatic proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation pattern exercise was applied, showed more significant changes in balance, gait ability, and depression than the control group (p<0.05). Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the elastic-band exercise program for elderly who over 65 years old in terms of depression and physical self efficacy. We aim to suggest interventions with an elastic-band exercise program for elderly. Methods : The study subjects selected were females or males 65 years old or more who could walk without assistance and could talk about daily living without mental or physical disorders. A total of eight subjects understood the purpose of this study and agreed to participate. Before and after the exercise program, the subjects were monitored for changes in their physical self-efficacy and depression. To measure the physical self-efficacy, we used a perceived physical ability scale and physical self-presentation confidence scale (Cronbach α =0.942). To measure depression, we used the geriatric depression scale short form (Korea version, Cronbach α =0.969). The data obtained from each measure were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test to determine changes from before and after the exercise program. The program consisted of three parts (warm-up, main exercise and cool-down) and included the upper extremities, the lower extremities and trunk exercises with an elastic band (yellow and red). The program lasted for 15 weeks, once a week, with each session lasting for 60 minutes. Results : After 15 weeks of the elastic-band exercise program, there was a significant decrease on the depression scale (p<0.05) and significant improvements on the physical self-efficacy scale (p<0.05). Conclusion : Based upon our results, we demonstrated that the exercise program using the elastic band was effective in improving the depression and physical self-efficacy of the elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of an exercise program on the health status and depression in the elderly. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. The exercise program (experimental group) consisted of 22 elderly over a period exercising for 12weeks, 3 days/week. The phone counselling about exercise and health(control group) was applied for 12 weeks for 10-15minutes/day/week. To identify the health status SF-36 was utilized and the GDS was used for depressionanalysis. The data was collected from May 2001 to July 2001. Result: The effect of the exercise appeared significant in the subarea of health status (physical function, physical role, mental health, general health) and depression. The effect of the phone counselling was appeared significant in subarea of health status - bodily pain. The effect of the exercise and the phone counselling did not appear significant. Conclusion: The exercise designed for the elderly promotes health in the elderly and further evaluation about the effect on exercise and phone counselling is needed.
