  • Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.

  • This empirical study discusses the current status and future directions of the SME informatization project based on cloud computing technology. Launched by the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs in 2013, the project started with the exemplar support of seven cooperatives in the industry. Currently, understanding past usage patterns and user expectations is imperative in developing future strategies and implementation plans. We determined that user satisfaction and expectations are different between the generic basic solutions and the industry-specific solutions embedded in the industry-specific business processes. We propose several strategies on how to coordinate market concerns about government invention on the cloud software market and government support to invigorate the use of computer systems among SMEs.

  • We synthesize a texture with different structures at different scales. Our technique is based on deterministic parallel synthesis allowing real-time processing on a GPU. A new coordinate transformation operator is used to construct a synthesized coordinate map based on different exemplars at different scales. The runtime overhead is minimal because this operator can be precalculated as a small lookup table. Our technique is effective for upsampling texture-rich images, because the result preserves texture detail well. In addition, a user can design a texture by coloring a low-resolution control image. This design tool can also be used for the interactive synthesis of terrain in the style of a particular exemplar, using the familiar 'raise and lower' airbrush to specify elevation.

  • Jejung Sinpyeon (New Edition of Medical Prescriptions) is a medical book that was compiled in order to overcome the shortcomings of Donguibogam (Exemplar of Korean Medicine), to improve and offer prescriptions suitable for new diseases according to the changing times, and simply to publish new medical books. As a result of an analysis of Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon (a book of medicine written by Kang Myeong-gil in 1799, the 23rd year of the reign of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty), it was found that a total of 303 lines had been quoted from Wan-bing-hui-chun of the Ming Dynasty of China] and Dongeui Susebowon and that 83 lines had been newly inserted by the author. Of the 303 lines, 296 were quoted from Dongeui Susebowon, and only seven from Wan-bing-hui-chun. This means that the author of Jejung Sinpyeon chiefly used Dongeui Susebowon as the source of Yakseongga quoted therein. 275 lines, or 76%, of a total of 386 lines of Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon, have their Korean names marked. Medicinal herbs marked as Chinese herbs number 83 out of 386. Among the 83 herbs named, one belongs to the part newly inserted by the author, while the remaining 82 are quoted from Yakseongga. The foregoing suggests that the author expected that the knowledge could be used by people easily based on an effort to make it localized knowledge, although Yakseongga was compiled based on quotations from Chinese literature. Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon has significant value as the country's first State-compiled book of medicine to contain Yakseongga.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a new energy minimization method for image completion with hierarchical approach. The goal of image completion is to fill in missing part in a possibly large region of an image so that a visually plausible outcome is obtained. An exemplar-based Markov Random Field Modeling(MRF) is proposed in this paper. This model can deal with following problems; detection of global features, flexibility on environmental changes, reduction of computational cost, and generic extension to other related domains such as image inpainting. We use the Priority Belief Propagation(Priority-BP) which is a kind of Belief propagation(BP) algorithms for the optimization of MRF. We propose the hierarchical Priority-BP that reduces the number of nodes in MRF and to apply hierarchical propagation of messages for image completion. We show that our approach which uses hierarchical Priority-BP algorithm in image completion works well on a number of examples.

  • NGE (Nested Generalized Exemplars) proposed by Salzberg improved the storage requirement and classification rate of the Memory Based Reasoning. It constructs hyperrectangles during training and performs classification tasks. It worked not bad in many area, however, the major drawback of NGE is constructing hyperrectangles because its hyperrectangle is extended so as to cover the error data and the way of maintaining the feature weight vector. We proposed the OH (Optimizing Hyperrectangle) algorithm which use the feature weight vectors and the ED(Exemplar Densimeter) to optimize resulting Hyperrectangles. The proposed algorithm, as well as the EACH, required only approximately 40% of memory space that is needed in k-NN classifier, and showed a superior classification performance to the EACH. Also, by reducing the number of stored patterns, it showed excellent results in terms of classification when we compare it to the k-NN and the EACH.

  • Although information communication technology (ICT) is long regard as very useful tool in today's construction engineering and project management environment, organizations must not only operate based upon its original setting, but also requires on-going observation, additional features and fine-tuning actions before the desirable outcome can be achieved. However, it is a very common phenomenon that organizations purchase the licensed "off-the-shelf-software" package and customize it to suit their own business need. Due to the incapability of such software and inefficient customization, the possible result is making that ICT tool not user-friendly and sometimes the whole system becomes obsolete. The purpose of this paper is to review and report those actions taken (between February 2006 and December 2010) by a construction organization to enhance the performance of its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system launched in December 2002. Such actions include: improving data inputting method; removing the transition bottleneck; introducing crystallization function; revising the organization's "Delegation and Limits of Authority"; publishing the "League Table" amongst users; integrating the 3D Mode into the system and upgrading hardware. Whilst the ultimate goals of such system are well beyond the time limit of this research study, an obvious interim result, achieved by this case studied organization, was winning a landmark project worth US$500 million after the ERP system was functioned properly and effectively. Their experience and success becomes an exemplar which can be borrowed by those companies, from managerial perspectives and as a roadmap, planning to adopt information technology (IT) strategy and use ICT tool in the construction engineering and project management framework. • Purpose: Dysmenorrhea mostly depends on the causative factor, which usually falls under the categories of Deficiency and Excess pattern in traditional Oriental medical theories and diagnosis. Thus, we investigated menstruation symptom and sign related to dysmenorrhea and verified the validity of Deficiency and Excess pattern identification. Methods: We investigated menstruation symptom and sign related to dysmenorrhea in total 14 gynecology-medical books including the book ${\ll}$Exemplar Of Korean Medicine (Dongui Bogam)${\gg}$ and whole body symptom and sign identifying Deficiency and Excess pattern at the same time. A survey based on this investigation was carried out targeting women of childbearing age. Results: Total of 14 gynecology-medical books have mostly narrated pre-menstrual and mid & post-menstrual pelvic pain depending on the time of its manifestation for identifying Deficiency and Excess pattern. Dysmenorrhea in pre-menstrual period belonged to Excess pattern and dysmenorrhea in mid & post-menstrual period belonged to Deficiency pattern. Among a total of 343 women, 196 subjects suffered from dysmenorrhea. The number of dysmenorrhea in pre-menstrual period (Excess pattern) was 116 people and in mid & post-menstrual period (Deficiency pattern) was 80 people. Deficiency and Excess pattern of dysmenorrhea in menstrual period significantly correlated to Deficiency and Excess pattern of whole body symptom and sign in the statistics(P-value < 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that pre-menstrual and mid & post-menstrual pelvic pain depending on the time of its manifestation is preferentially utilized as symptom and sign related to dysmenorrhea identifying Deficiency and Excess pattern.
