  • The integrity of the turbine rotors can be assessed by measuring the material properties at service temperature. In order to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel nondestructively, a measurement system of reversible magnetic permeability using an alternating perturbing magnetic field was constructed. We present a new non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel using the value of reversible magnetic permeability. This method is based on the existence of reversible magnetic permeability in the differential magnetization around the coercive field strength. We measured the first harmonics voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to an exciting frequency. The Results of reversible magnetic Permeability and Wickers hardness on the aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible magnetic permeability (PIRMP) and Vickers hardness decreases as aging time increases. A softening curve is obtained from the correlation between Vickers hardness and the PIRMP. This curve can be used as a non-destructive method to evaluate the remanent life of turbine rotor steel.

  • The recently developed marine engines for propulsion of ships have higher torsional exciting force than previous engines to improve the propulsion efficiency and to reduce specific fuel oil consumption. As a result, a viscous damper or viscous-spring damper is installed in front of marine engine to control the torsional vibration. In the case of viscous damper, it is supposed that there is no elastic connection in the silicon oil, which is filled between the damper housing and inertia ring. However, In reality, the silicon oil with high viscosity possesses torsional stiffness and has non-linear dynamic characteristics according to the operating temperature and frequency of the viscous damper. In this study, the damping characteristics of a viscous damper used to control the torsional vibration of the shafting system have been reviewed and the characteristics of torsional vibration of the shafting system equipped with a corresponding viscous damper have been examined. In addition, it is examined how to interpret the theoretically optimal dynamic characteristics of a viscous damper for this purpose, and the optimum design for the propulsion shafting system has been suggested considering the operating temperature and aging. when the torsional vibration of the shafting system is controlled by a viscous damper filled with highly viscous silicon oil.

  • Toroidal cores made of metallic powder requires large magnetic field strength up to few decade kA/m to obtain major hysteresis loop. To overcome thermal heat generation problem from large exciting current during measurement, we have employed a real time hysteresis loop tracer which can digitize and calculate B-H signals in personal computer as real time. For example, when we magnetize specimen at 10 Hz frequency, we could display hysteresis loops 10 times per second. Using the real time hysteresis loop tracer, we could measure major hysteresis loop of toroidal shape metallic powder core at maximum flux density or maximum magnetic field strength to be measured within 5 second not to significant increasement of specimen temperature due to the heat dissipation from coil windings. For the constructed hysteresis loop tracer, we could measure hysteresis loop at magnetic field strength higher than 50 kA/m for the toroidal shape specimen.

  • OWEC (Overtopping Wave Energy Converter) is a wave power generation system using the wave overtopping. The performance and safety of the OWEC are affected by wave characteristics, such as wave height, period. To mitigate this issue, optimal OWEC designs based on wave characteristics must be investigated. In this study, the environmental conditions along the Ulleungdo coast were used. The hydraulic efficiency of the OWEC was calculated using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) by comparing 4 models that changed the substructure. As a result, it was possible to change the substructure. Through design optimization, a new truss-type structure, which is a substructure capable of carrying the design load, was proposed. Through a case study using member diameter and thickness as design variables, structural safety was secured under allowable stress conditions. Considering wave load, the natural frequency of the proposed structure was compared with the wave period of the relevant sea area. Harmonic response analysis was performed using wave with a 1-year return period as the load. The proposed substructure had a reduced response magnitude at the same exciting force, and achieved weight reduction of more than 32%.

  • This paper describes a shaped-beam antenna for increasing the antenna gain of a radiating element. The proposed antenna structure is composed of an exciting element and a multi-layered disk array structure(MDAS). The stack micro-strip patch elements were used as the exciter for effectively radiating the electromagnetic power to the MDAS over the broadband, and finite metallic disk array elements - which give the role of a director for shaping the antenna beam with the high gain - were finitely and periodically layered onto it. The efficient power coupling between the exciter and the MDAS should be carried out in such a way that the proposed antenna has a high gain characteristic. The design parameters of the exciter and the MDAS should be optimized together to meet the required specifications to meet the required specifications. In this study, a shaped-beam antenna with high gain was optimally designed under the operating conditions with a linear polarization and the frequency band of $9.6{\sim}10.4\;GHz$. Two methods constructed using thin dielectric film and dielectric foam materials respectively were also proposed in order to implement the MBAS of the antenna. In particular, through the computer simulation process, the electrical performance variations of the antenna with the MDAS realized by the thin dielectric film materials were shown according to the number of disk array elements in the stack layer. Two kinds of antenna breadboard with the MDAS realized with the thin dielectric film and dielectric foam materials were fabricated, but experimentation was conducted only on the antenna breadboard(Type 1) with the MDAS realized with the thin dielectric film materials according to the number of disk array elements in the stack layer in order to compare it with the electrical performance variations obtained during the simulation. The measured antenna gain performance was found to be in good agreement with the simulated one, and showed the periodicity of the antenna gain variations according to the stack layer number of the disk array elements. The electrical performance of the Type 1 antenna was measured at the center frequency of 10 GHz. As the disk away elements became the ten stacks, a maximum antenna gain of 15.65 dBi was obtained, and the measured return loss was not less than 11.4 dB within the operating band. Therefore, a 5 dB gain improvement of the Type 1 antenna can be obtained by the MDAS that is excited by the stack microstrip patch elements. As the disk array elements became the twelve stacks, the antenna gain of the Type 1 was measured to be 1.35 dB more than the antenna gain of the Type 2 by the outer dielectric ring effect, and the 3 dB beam widths measured from the two antenna breadboards were about $28^{\circ}$ and $36^{\circ}$ respectively.

  • The safety related components in the nuclear power plant should be designed to withstand the seismic load. Among these components the integrity of reactor internals under earthquake load is important in stand points of safety and economics, because these are classified to Seismic Class I components. So far the modelling methods of reactor internals have been investigated by many authors. In this paper, the dynamic behaviour of reactor internals of Yong Gwang 1&2 nuclear power plants under SSE(Safe Shutdown Earthquake) load is analyzed by using of the simpled Global Beam Model. For this, as a first step, the characteristic analysis of reactor internal components are performed by using of the finite element code ANSYS. And the Global Beam Model for reactor internals which includes beam elements, nonlinear impact springs which have gaps in upper and lower positions, and hydrodynamical couplings which simulate the fluid-filled cylinders of reactor vessel and core barrel structures is established. And for the exciting external force the response spectrum which is applied to reactor support is converted to the time history input. With this excitation and the model the dynamic behaviour of reactor internals is obtained. As the results, the structural integrity of reactor internal components under seismic excitation is verified and the input for the detailed duel assembly series model could be obtained. And the simplicity and effectiveness of Global Beam Model and the economics of the explicit Runge-Kutta-Gills algorithm in impact problem of high frequency interface components are confirmed.
