  • This work carried out to define the characteristic of Cymbidium kanran habitat at Mt. Halla in Jejudo, Korea from the ecological point of view including geological and topographical features, air and soil temperature, relative humidity, fluctuations of light intensity, habitat vegetation, distribution altitude, area limit, and etc. And another goal of this study consider the conservation counterplan of the cymbidium habitat. Natural distribution areas of the cymbidium were observed more abundantly on the well drained south and east-facing slopes. Soil acidity was ranged from pH 4.1 to 5.3, and electric conductivity was ranged from 176.4 to 299.9 us/cm (average 215.3 us/cm). Base-saturation percentage of the habitat soil was below 50%, bulk density 0.42g/$cm^2$, particle density 2.05g/$cm^2$, humus content 26%, total nitrogen 0.82%, available phosphate 4.2 mg/kg, exchangeable potassium 0.63 Cmol/kg, calcium 0.44 Cmol/kg and magnesium 0.67 Cmol/kg. Annual mean air temperature was $15.4^{\circ}C$, however, air temperature was ranged $11.7{\sim}18.2^{\circ}C$ in spring, $21.2{\sim}23.8^{\circ}C$ in summer, $12.8{\sim}22.0^{\circ}C$ in fall and $5.5{\sim}7.8^{\circ}C$ in winter season. Annual mean soil temperature at depth of 10cm was $13.2^{\circ}C$ And minimum value was recorded $4.7^{\circ}C$ on January, and maximum value $22.5^{\circ}C$ on August. Relative humidity was ranged 90.8~94.7% in summer, 80.8~91.5% in fall and 77.6~84.2% in winter season. Minimum value was 56.5% on December, and maximum value was 100% on July and August. Light intensities were ranged from 400 to 1,800 lux at the greater part of Cymbidium kanran sites in Jejudo. Summer regarded as an lower light intensities was recorded to be range of 500~600 lux; however, autumn and winter were shown higher light regimes ranged from 3,500 to 3,800 lux. Therefore, one must be suprised that the cymbidium grow at the light condition of 6 lux (minimum) or 10,000 lux (maximum). Tree species keeping higher frequency rate and density were Eurya japonica, Camellia japonica, Castanopsis cuspidata, Carpinus laxiflora and Pinus densiflora. Number of trees growing in a 5${\times}$5m quardrat was 35 as an average, and proportion of evergreen versus deciduous was 5:1. Distribution altitude of the orchid habitat was ranged from 120m (low) to 840m (high) from sea level on the south facing slope of Mt. Halla, and was ranged eastern borderline of Gujwaup, Bukjejugun to western boundaries of Jungmundong, Seogwipo city. For the stable conservation of Cymbidium kanran habitat, sunlight regimes must be increased more by means of cutting trees or twigs in the site.

  • The effects of irregular burning of vegetation by man were studied in relation to composition and productivity in a non-agricultural montane grassland in the Chongsun area, Kangwon-Do, Korea. The floristic composition in all study area includes 38 species. Three of the stations are dominated by Arundinella hirta and one is dominated by Miscanthus sinensis. The standing crop of the first station, which was fired in early spring, 1970, was 358.7g/$m^2$ to 497.5g/$m^2$; that of the second station, fired in late 1969 was 351. 5g/$m^2$; the third station, fired sometime in 1968, had a standing crop of 314.5g/$m^2$ to 397.1/$m^2$; the fourth station, having had no recent fires, had a standing crop of 370.0g/$m^2$ to 448.0g/$m^2$. The daily productivity shows a maximum of 6.03g/$m^2$ in the first station, and a minimum of 0.85g/$m^2$ in the fourth station. The productivity of grassland in the study area is at a maximum during July and August because of much precipitation, and decreases rapidly in the months to follow. The productive structure of the first and fourth stations is shown in Fig. 2 and 3. At the first station the maximum height attained by the plants was 180cm. In the height range of 50cm to 100cm there was a maximum of assimilative organs (5.6g/0.25$m^2$$\times$10cm), while in the height range below 50cm there was a maximum of non-assimilative organs (13.0g/0.25$m^2$$\times$10cm). At the fourth station, which has not been fired recently, the maximum height reached by the plants was commonly below 100cm. The assimilative organs showed a maximum abundance in the height range of 40cm to 50cm (4.5g/0.25$m^2$$\times$10cm). while the non-assimilative organs showed their greated abundance in the height range below 10cm (6.0g/0.25$m^2$$\times$10cm). There was a direct relationship between daily productivity and organic matter, available phosphorous, exchangeable calcium and potassium. It appears that the nutrients provided by the ash created in the firing of the study can be an important factor in the productivity of these grasslands.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of amount of nitrogen application with the barley straw application on the changes in soil physical and chemical properties. nutrient uptake and percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in the rice plant from 1997 to 1998. The soil physical properties, such as bulk density, hardness, porosity and gaseous phase were improved by barley straw application. There was also improvement or increment in the soil chemical properties, such as pH, organic matter, T-C. T-N, available $SiO_2$, exchangeable K and cation exchange capacity, but decrease in available $P_2O_5$. The $Fe^{+{+}}$ content in soil after barley straw application was high from tillering stage to panicle forming stage, but becoming lowered toward the heading stage, while $Mn^{+{+}}$ content was increased. N uptake with barley straw application was increased in the N $126kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, but decreased in the N $141kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot. The uptake of fertilized N was continued longer in barley straw application than none-application plot. Percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in rice straw was around 1% at tillering stage, but was highly increasing till maximum tillering stage, while the recovery was generally low in barley straw application. Meanwhile, fertilizer P uptake in barley straw application was high, but potassium uptake was low at all different levels of N application.

  • Effects of different amounts of fertilizer and manure application on changes of chemical and biological properties of soil were studied in plastic film house. Application amount of fertilizer was determined on the basis of soil test, standard application rate, and conventional rate of farmers. Lettuce in the first and second seasons and spinach in the third season were cultivated. Crop yields were highest in the plot fertilized on the basis of soil test during the three crop seasons. In the third crop season, spinach yield was lower in conventional plot applied with larger amount of pig manure compost than any other treatment. Organic matter, available phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium were accumulated in soil of the conventional plot with successive cropping. There was no difference in the abundance of soil invertebrates among the treatments, but soil enzyme activity was highest in the conventional plot.

  • The Cheju citrus orchards have been chemically fertilized with both phosphates high in Ca and Mg contents and potassium. The amount of chemical fertilizers consumed per unit area of cultivated land and the ratios of $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ to N in chemical fertilizers applied were much higher in the Cheju Island than those of the Korean mainland. These trends were particularly prominant in Southern Cheju where 70% of the Cheju citrus orchards are located. As the result of heavy applications of phosphate fertilizers, the available phosphorus of citrus orchard soils increased with increasing number of years under cultivation. The available phosphorus of sub-soil increased slightly with the number of years under cultivation compared to that of surface soil. Base saturation and pH increased with the number of years under cultivation, inasmuch as exchangeable bases such as Ca, Mg and K increased predominantly, but the cation exchange capacity did not vary in the citrus orchard soils.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of fertigation level such as 50%, 75% and 100% N of standard amount of chemical fertilizer,m and fertigation interval such as every irrigation, intervals of 1 and 2 weeks of piggery waste water(PWW) on the growth, yield of red pepper plant and the chemical properties of soil used. In early stage, growth of red pepper plant fertigated with PWW and that of red pepper plant applicated standard chemical fertilezer was the same, while it were increased as increasing application amounts of PWW, and later growth and total yield of red pepper plant were much more at 75% N fertigation of PWW. Inorganic content such as nitrogen, phosphate and potassium and chlorophyll content of red pepper leaves were increased as increasing fergigation amount of PWW. 50% fertigation level showed the lowest rate of fruit setting of red peper plant. For soil chemical properties, pH was slightly decreased, but available $P_2O_5$, and exchangeable K content were increased as increasing fertigation amount of PWW. Because there was not statistically significant difference in the growth, the yield of red pepper and chemical properties of soil used according to various fertigation intervals, and no need to artificially supply PWW, therefore fertigation by simple automatic system with tensiometer was thought to be better.

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of topdressing on maintaining the quality and density of zoysiagrass. An increase in the topdressing height from 2 mm to 16 mm (2, 4, 8, and 16 mm) led to an increase in the plant heigh, fresh and dry weight of shoots, roots, and stolons. The number of shoots, stolons and concentrations of chlorophyll and carotenoid also increased with increasing topdressing height. Moreover, total concentrations of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, potassium, magnesium, and lime in shoots and roots were enhanced as topdressing height increased. Acidity and the concentrations of organic matters, total nitrogen, and exchangeable cations ($K^+$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$) of topdressed soil was higher than not topdressed soil, while the amount of available phosphoric acid in topdressed soil was lower than not topdressed. The topdressed soil enhanced the growth and density of zoysiagrass, while it was a crucial factor to affect the chemical property of the soil. Optimum topdressing height was thought to be 8 mm since topdressing the soil with topdressing height of 8 mm not only improved the growth of zoysiagrass but also resulted in the highest concentration of nitrogen and organic matters in the soil.

  • Fluvio-marine paddy soils in Korea consist of high silt content and have the hardpan located below 20~30 cm from surface soil. This properties cause poor rice rhizosphere conditions such as low permeability and porosity, high bulk density and hardness. The aims of this study was to investigate the effect of popped rice hulls compost(PRHC) on soil fertility changes in the Fluvio-marine plain paddy soils. Total nitrogen content and nitrogen mineralization rate of PRHC were 1.17 and 33.5, respectively, and its C/N ratio was 35.4. Application of PRHC increased the content of organic matter and exchangeable potassium and improved the bulk density and porosity. The content of $NH_4-N$ in soil was high in the PRHC plot until maximum tillering stage. An uptake amount of fertilized nitrogen was greater in standard fertilization plot at early growth stage, however, it was greater more in PRHC plots at the ripening period than in standard fertilization plot. Among the PRHC treated plots, uptake amount was the greatest in 50% PRHC plot during the all growth period. Nitrogen efficiencies were higher in PRHC plot during the all growth period. Rice yields in all PRHC plots were lower than in standard fertilization, however, the yield of 40% PRHC plot was similar with that of standard.
