Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate self-rated health status and its influencing factors among low-income middle-aged women. Methods: Data on 594 women between the ages of 40 and 59 were collected from November 2007 to January 2008. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data. The following instruments-self efficacy, family support, health promotion behavior- were used in the study after some adaption. Results: The score for the health promotion behavior was 2.94(exercixe), 3.78(nutrition), 3.35(stress), 3.06(Health examination). The score for the self-efficacy was 3.47 and family support was 3.75. In the relationship between demographic and self-rated health status, there were significant differences in job, education level, self efficacy, family support, health promotion behavior. In hierarchy multiple regression analysis, the variables affecting the self-rated health status were job, education, exercise, health examination, family support, self efficacy. Conclusion: Self-efficacy and family support need to be considered in planning health program to improve self-rated health status among middle-aged women.
Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between Yangsaeng and general health status. Methods : In this study, we used data from the combined 2008-2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). Mental Yangsaeng was measured by stress recognition and depression. Food Yangsaeng was measured by breakfast skipping and mixed grain diet. Life style Yangsaeng was measured by sleeping time and working pattern. Exercise Yangsaeng was measured by walking and exercise. We defined general health status as EQ-5Dindex, EQ-5Dvas, frequency and day of lying in a sickbed in last one month and activity limitation. Results : Mental Yangsaeng, food Yangsaeng, life style Yangsaeng and exercise Yangsaeng have 8 factors. Most of factors significant correlation with EQ-5Dindex, EQ-5Dvas, frequency and day of lying in a sickbed in last one month and activity limitation. Conclusion : Yangsaeng and general health status have positive correlation.
Background: Muscle mass and muscle function are related to depressed mood in studies of adults. Like adults, Korean students are highly likely to suffer from decreased muscle mass due to social conditions. In this study, we evaluated the muscle mass status of Korean adolescents and assess the effect of muscle on depressive mood. Methods: A total of 1,233 adolescent boys and girls participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were enrolled in our study. Participants underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for assessment of appendicular muscle mass and completed questionnaires regarding depressed mood, stress, suicidal ideations, and attempts. Results: There was no difference in depressive mood according to muscle mass among boys (P = 0.634); girls with decreased muscle mass had a greater tendency for depressed mood compared to girls with optimal muscle mass (P = 0.023). After adjusting for age, waist circumference-to-height ratio, smoking status, alcohol consumption, frequency of physical activity, self-reported obesity, weight-loss efforts, and monthly household income, girls with low muscle mass (LMM) were 2.60 times more at risk of developing depression than girls with normal muscle mass (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-6.49; P = 0.040). This trend was similar for girls with LMM with obesity (95% CI, 1.00-11.97; P = 0.049). Conclusion: Adolescent girls who have insufficient muscle mass are more likely to report depressed mood than girls who have ideal muscle mass. Interventions for maintaining proper muscle mass are required.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify the relationships of oral and systemic health-related characteristics with health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) in the elderly, and factors related to quality of life were compared according to age subgroups classified as either younger (young-old) or older (old-old) than 75 years of age. Methods: Data acquired by the Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) from 2013 to 2015 were used, and the research target was 3,124 people aged 65 years or older. A complex samples general linear model was used to identify health-related quality of life factors. Results: Education, economic activity, depression, stress, regular walking, self-rated oral health, pronunciation problems, and unmet dental care had significant effects on quality of life in both young-old and old-old participants. Marriage, income, number of systemic diseases, sleeping, and chewing inconveniences were significant factors for the young-old but not in the old-old participants. Instead, obesity and drinking were identified as significant factors in the old-old participants. Conclusions: We reaffirmed that factors affecting health-related quality of life in older adults differed by age group. We also confirmed the impact of oral health-related characteristics on this quality. Therefore, to improve quality of life for older adults, it would be efficient to divide groups by age and develop and implement programs that take relevant factors into consideration.
Background: Limited information is available regarding the associations of various nutrients and periodontitis in Korea. Furthermore, these associations have been controversial in previous studies. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the associations between several nutrients and periodontitis. Methods: Pooled data from the 2007~2010 and 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) were used for the present study. Periodontitis was defined using the World Health Organization (WHO) Community Periodontal Index. All participants completed the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), which was analyzed using CAN-Pro 4.0. Vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, iron, phosphorus, calcium, and protein were selected for analysis. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) for periodontitis. Results: Lower intake of phosphorus (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.86), calcium (AOR = 1.25), and protein (AOR = 1.52) were associated with periodontitis in males, and lower intake of vitamins A (AOR = 1.32), B1 (AOR = 1.21), B2 (AOR = 1.24), and C (AOR = 1.21), iron (AOR = 1.25), phosphorus (AOR = 1.33), and protein (AOR = 1.27) showed significant relationships with periodontitis in females. In the sociodemographic, somatic, and health behavior-adjusted models, lower phosphorus (AOR = 2.68) and protein (AOR = 1.68) intake in younger males, and lower vitamin A intake (AOR = 1.37) in middle-aged females were significantly associated with periodontitis. Conclusions: The results of the present study demonstrated a significant association between periodontitis and nutrient intake. To avoid an insufficient nutrient supply for a patient with periodontal disease, the patient's diet should be closely monitored.
The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors related to prehypertension in Korean adults. The data were collected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2018. The subjects of this study were 3,286 adults aged over 30 years of old. We analyzed risk factors of prehypertension using multiple logistic regression based on complex sample design. The prevalence of prehypertension was 60.8%. As the result, the risk of prehypertension in elderly, current smoking persons, overweight, obesity, hyperlipidemia in triglyceride and HDL cholesterol. And the risk of decreased in health check-up, aerobic physical activity. Therefore, in order to reduce the incidence of prehypertension, it is required to prepare interventions to prevent prehypertension through the adjustment of lifestyle for subjects with risk factors for developing prehypertension.
Background: Despite the high life expectancy, the subjective health status of the elderly people in Korea is reported to be the lowest as compared to other age groups. The purpose of the conducted study was to identify the factors related to the subjective health status of elderly people aged over 65 in Korea. Methods: This study used data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2017) of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The subjects of the study were selected to be 2,904 elderly people aged over 65. The factors that were selected related to subjective health status were socio-demographics, perceived diseases, health behaviors, and mental health. Results: As a result of the examination of the subjective health status according to the characteristics of the subjects of study, the subjective health status was high in males (β=0.144, p=0.011), urban dwellers (β=0.107, p=0.015), employed persons (β=0.139, p=0.001), college graduates (β=0.322, p<0.001), persons with high household income (β=0.226, p<0.001), persons without chronic disease, nonsmokers (β=0.146, p=0.009), drinkers (β=0.111, p=0.003), persons who practiced aerobic physical activity (β=0.150, p<0.001), persons without depression (β=0.286, p<0.001), and persons who rarely had stress (β=0.837, p<0.001). Conclusion: More attention should be paid to those with low subjective health to improve health for elderly people. Expanding policy supports are required for elderly people with low socioeconomic status, chronic disease or depression, or unhealthy behaviors (smoking or lack of physical activity).
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in Koreans, and eating habits, including diet quality, are among the etiologies of these diseases. Recently, various studies on regional health disparities have been conducted. However, there are limited studies on their relationship with nutritional factors. This study aimed to identify the magnitude of regional disparities in diet quality and prevalence of CVD in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 17,646 participants aged ≥ 20 years from the 7th (2013-2016) Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants were classified into four groups based on their residential areas: City 1, City 2, City 3, and non-city. Demographic characteristics, health-related factors, body mass index (BMI), metabolic syndrome index, diet quality, and CVD prevalence were evaluated. RESULTS: In terms of demographic characteristics, age (P < 0.001), marital status (P < 0.001), educational level (P < 0.001), and income (P < 0.001) were lower in the non-city category. Health-related factors such as monthly drinking rate (P < 0.01) and mental stress (P < 0.05) were the highest in City 1 and lowest in the non-city group. Conversely, the current smoking rate (P < 0.05), BMI (P < 0.05), and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (P < 0.001) were the highest in the non-city group (P < 0.05). The non-city group also had the highest prevalence of CVDs (35.6%). This group had the lowest diet quality index (68.36 ± 0.22, P < 0.01), caused by low intake of fruit and calcium, a lack of sodium moderation, and an overall imbalance in the macronutrient and fatty acid ratio. When the diet quality index was increased by 1, the odds ratio for the prevalence of CVDs was reduced by 0.991 (P < 0.001), but this was not the case in all regions. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides useful information and data in identifying and resolving the regional health disparities related to CVD prevalence and implementation of public health nutrition systems.
Purpose: This study aims to compare and analyze the changes in the physical and mental health status of middle-aged women before and after menopause and their quality of life over the past 10 years. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted by using secondary data from the 4th and 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) involving middle-aged women in menopause (N=8,363). Data were analyzed using the complex sample x2 test. Results: Compared to 10 years ago, notable changes were observed in general characteristics. These included increase in age, education level, economic activity, and urban residency. In addition, there was an increase in alcohol consumption, a decrease in smoking, and a decline in regular exercise. The study also observed changes in obesity rates and an increase in dyslipidemia and stress levels, along with positive changes across all aspects of quality of life. Conclusion: The results indicate temporal changes in general characteristics, major physical and mental health factors, and the quality of life of middle-aged women in menopause. Thus, it is essential to consider these changes when designing health interventions such as health promotions and education initiatives for middle-aged women experiencing menopause. Further research is necessary for identifying factors influencing the quality of life of middle-aged women in menopause.

Purpose : As the population aging deepens, the number of elderly people with arthritis is also continuously increasing. Accordingly, this study intended to identify the factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis according to household type and provide baseline data for developing a measure to enhance the life quality of the elderly with arthritis. Methods : The factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis were identified based on the raw data from the Korea national health and nutrition examination survey conducted in 2021. Data were analyzed with SPSS Statistics ver 25.0 for windows (IBM Corp), and the significance level (α) was set to .05. Statistical analysis was performed with t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and post-hoc analysis with Duncan test. Results : The factors that influenced the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of single-households were medical aid (β=-.17, p=.045), restriction of activity (β=-.17, p=.023), self-rated health status (β=.29, p<.001), and anxiety scale (β=-.36, p<.001). The factors that influenced the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of multi-households were an age of 75 or over (β=-.14, p=.011), living in rural (β=-.14, p=.003), the outpatient department treatment experience (β=-.09, p=.047), self-rated health status (β=.26, p<.001), anxiety scale (β=-.29, p<.001), and stress (β=-.22, p<.001). Conclusion : Factors affecting the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis were found to be different between single-person households and multi-person household. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare measures to improve the quality of life of the elderly with arthritis by considering the factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HINT-8) of the elderly with arthritis according to the household type identified in this study.
