The experimental heat transfer coefficients have been measured for two-phase convective boiling in two circular microtubes with inner diameters of $430{\mu}m\;and\;792{\mu}m$. While the heat transfer was greatly affected by the heat flux in the low quality region, the mass flux played a role in the high quality region. The smaller microtube had greater heat transfer coefficients. When the heat flux is varied from $20kW/m^2\;to\;30kW/m^2\;at\;G=240kg/m^2s$, the difference between the average heat transfer coefficients of the test tube $A(D_i=430{\mu}m)$ and the test tube $B(D_i=792{\mu}m)$ changes from $32.5\%\;to\;52.1\%$. At $G=370kg/m2^s$, the difference between the average heat transfer coefficients changes from $47.0\%\;to\;53.8\%$. A new correlation for the evaporative heat transfer coefficients in microtubes was developed by considering the following factors; the laminar flow heat transfer coefficient of liquid-phase flow, the enhancement factor of the convective heat transfer, and the nucleate boiling correction factor. The correlation developed in this study predicts the experimental heat transfer coefficients within an absolute average deviation of $8.4\%$.

Falling film heat transfer has been widely used in many applications in which heat and mass transfer occur simultaneously, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, absorption chillers, etc. In such cases, it is desirable that the falling film spreads widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface and to reduce the thermal resistance across the film and/or the flow resistance to the vapor stream over the film. In this work, the surface is treated to have thin porous layer on the surface. With this treatment, the liquid can be spread widely on the surface by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. In addition to this, the liquid can be held within the porous structure to improve surface wettedness regardless of the surface inclination. The experiment on the evaporative cooling of an inclined surface has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the surface treatment. It is measured that the evaporative heat transfer increases about $50\%$ by the porous layer treatment as compared with that from orignal bare surfaces.
Evaporative heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide has been investigated. Experiment has been carried out for seamless stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 9.55 mm and inner diameter of 7.75 mm. Direct heating method is used for supplying heat to the refrigerant was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. The saturation temperature of refrigerant is calculated from the measured saturation pressure by using an equation of state. Inner wall temperature was calculated from measured outer wall temperature, accounting for heat generation in the tube and heat conduction through the tube wall. Mass Quality of refrigerant was calculated by considering energy balance in the preheater and the test section. Heat fluxes were set at 12, 16, 20, 23, and $27kW/m^2$, mass fluxes were controlled at 212, 318, 424, and $530 kg/m^2s$, and saturation temperature of refrigerant were adjusted at 0, 3.4, 6.7 and $10.5^{\circ}C$. From this study, heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide have been provided with respect to quality for several mass fluxes, heat fluxes. Finally, the experimental results in this study are compared with the correaltion by Gungor and Winterton(1987).

The object of the present study is to develop a high performance evaporator for automotive air conditioner. The experiment has been conducted on evaporative heat transfer coefficient inside a plate type heat exchanger with a sharp 180-degree turn flow. The test plates have different formed surface, cross-ribbed channel and elliptical-ribbed channel. Also experimental study has been performed to determine optimal design in elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger with different turn clearance. In addition to the above experiments, refrigerant behavior and surface temperature distribution in the plate heat exchanger were observed using color thermoviewer(infrared thermometer). In this experiment, working fluid was used R-12 and test conditions were as follows : (1) saturation pressure of $2.116kg/cm^2$, (2) mass fluxes of 40 to $70kg/m^2s$, (3) heat fluxes of 4,500 to $7,300W/m^2$, (4) inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.7. The results indicated that the evaporative heat transfer coefficient of an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was higher than that of cross-ribbed plate heat exchanger. Also optimal turn clearance in an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was determined.

The analysis of the evaporative heat transfer in the inclined porous layer (0.deg.<.theta.<90.deg.) is made by using capillary model. The length of the evaporation zone is obtained numerically by integrating the differential equation using a Runge-Kutta algorithm. As a result, the length of the evaporation zone is inverse proportional to the dimensionless number, E(=Re*.phi./cos.theta.) representing the evaporation intensity, and the relationship of these parameters shows linear in the log graph.

In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of the evaporative transpiration cooled system is analytically investigated considering the occurrence of the two-phase evaporation zone. Under the condition of the external heat input, analytical solutions of the three regions (i.e., vapor, liquid and two-phase evaporation zone) are respectively obtained using the matching conditions for the steady-state problem where properties are constant. As results, the length of the evaporation zone increases with increasing heat input and with decreasing mass flow rate. It also increases with increasing particle size, system porosity, thermal conductivity of material, inlet temperature and latent heat of coolant. The position of the lower interface of the evaporation zone have a lot of efforts on the evaporation zone length, the position of the upper interface penetrates deeper into the porous layer with lower thermal conductivity of porous material, higher system porosity and larger particle size.

New alternative refrigerants have been developed due to the ozone layer depletion and global warming. For this reason, carbon dioxide is believed to be a promising refrigerant for use in air conditioners and heat pumps. Evaporative heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop of $CO_2$ with outer diameter of 5 mm in inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes have been investigated by the experiments with respect to several test conditions such as mass fluxes, heat fluxes, evaporation temperatures in this study. The inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes with length of 1.44 m were installed to measure the evaporative heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ and heat was supplied to the refrigerant by direct heating method where the test tube was uniformly heated by electricity. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes from 212 to $656\;kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes from 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and evaporation temperatures from -10 to $20^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are slightly increased with increasing mass flux, and the heat transfer characteristics in the inclined ($45^{\circ}$) tubes are enhanced about $5{\sim}10%$ compared with those in horizontal or vertical tubes.

Heat transfer characteristics of evaporative transpiration cooling was investigated experimentally in the range of coolant mass flux, 0.002kg/m$^{2}$.sec~0.015m$^{2}$.sec. Glass beads, sand and copper particles were used as porous media and distilled water was used as a conant. The existence of evaporation zone was confirmed on this experimental conditions and its length increases with increasing article size and with decreasing mass flux. In order to get the low surface temperature, porous materials with high thermal conductivity is preferred when the panicle sizes are same, and small particles with low porosity is effective in case of the same material. Due to the relatively small coolant mass flux, evaporative transpiration cooling system could be stable by the capillary effect.

In recent years, carbon dioxide among natural refrigerants has gained consider-able attention as an alternative refrigerant due to its excellent thermophysical properties. However, few investigations have been performed to develop useful correlations of heat trans-fer coefficients and pressure drop during evaporation of carbon dioxide. This study is aiming at providing the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop during the evaporation process of carbon dioxide. Heat is provided by a direct heating method to the test section, which was made of a seamless stainless steel tube with an inner diameter of 7.53 mm, and a length of 5.0 m. Experiments were conducted at saturation temperatures of -4 to 2$0^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 12 to 20 ㎾/$m^2$ and mass fluxes of 200 to 530 kg/$m^2$s. A comparison of different heat transfer correlations applicable to evaporation of carbon dioxide has been made. Based on the experiments for evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop, new correlations were developed. The newly developed empirical correlations for the heat transfer and pressure drop show average absolute deviations of 15.3% and 16.2%, respectively.

Experiments have been performed to investigate evaporative heat transfer characteristics of R-134a flowing in a small diameter tube. Test section was made of stainless steel tube with an inner diameter of 2.2mm and was uniformly heated by electric current which was applied to the tube wall. The local saturation temperature of refrigerant flowing in a tube is calculated from the measured local saturation pressure by using an equation of state. Inner wall temperature was calculated from measured outer wall temperature, accounting for heat generation in the tube and one dimensional heat conduction through the tube wall. Mass quality of refrigerant flowing in a tube was calculated by considering energy balance in the pre-heater and the test section. Heat flux was varied from 19 to 64kW/$m^2$, and mass flux was chanted from 380 to 570kg/$m^2$s for each heat flux condition. From this study, heat transfer in a small diameter tube is affected by heat flux as well as mass flux for a wide range of mass quality. Heat transfer coefficient in a small diameter tube is much greater than that in medium sized tubes. Test results in this study are compared with Gungor and Winterton correlation, which gives an absolute average deviation of 27%.
