  • The instantaneous temperature behaviors on impinging plate in case of ultra high pressure have been measured and analyzed by using the instantaneous temperature probe and ultra high pressure injection equipment. The temperature drop was largest at P1 which is center of impinging spray and decreased with propagation of spray to the radius direction. The temperature drop was bigger in case of higher temperature of impinging plate. The temperature drop decreased with increase of injection pressure. But decreasing rate of temperature drop was slight over 2,500 bars. Therefore, it was predicted that the fuel evaporation versus the increase of injection pressure was maximum at around 2,500 bars.

  • The present study was numerically and experimentally performed to investigate the fire suppression performance of water mist spray subjected to thermal radiation in closed space. Downward-directed water mist sprays to interact with an under kerosine pool fire were investigated in test facility The mass mean diameters of water mist droplet were measured by PMAS under various flow conditions. The developed water mist spray nozzle was satisfied to the criteria of NFPA 750, Class 1. The mechanism of the fire suppression by water mist was attributed to the cooling of the fire surface which lead to suppressed of fuel evaporation. It was proved that the water mist spray system under lower pressures could be applied to underground fire protection system.

  • Resistive heating sources are widely used to prepare thin films by vapor deposition because they are cheap, and easy to install and handle in vacuum system. Graphite is one of materials used to make the resistive heating source, but until now only limited applications have been possible as it reacts easily with evaporating materials at high temperature. In this study, evaporation characteristics of aluminum have been investigated by using graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder. The employed graphite boat has been prepared by spray-coating BN power onto the cavity surface of the boat and thermal treatment with aluminum in vacuum at the temperature of more than $1400^{\circ}C$. The voltage-current characteristics as well as resistivity changes of the graphite boat have been investigated during aluminum evaporation according to the applied voltage and time. The evaporation aspect has been picturized during flash evaporation for 40 seconds based on the characterization results. The evaporation rate of the graphite boat has been compared with that of BN boat. The graphite boat showed some different characteristics compared with BN boat, in that the evaporation occurred at the last stage of flash evaporation. The film appearance according to the applied voltage has been compared, and also the reflectance of the resulting film has been investigated according to the film thickness. It has been found that the graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder can be used for aluminum evaporation without problem.

  • In this study, to investigate the effect of spray behavior characteristics, we induce the mixing ratio of emulsified fuel using impinging spray. We formulate the emulsified fuel by mixing diesel and hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$). We set the temperature of the heating plate to $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$, and set the injection pressures to 400, 600, 800, and 1000bar. The surfactants for the emulsified fuel mixture, which were mixed span80 and tween80 was mixed as 9:1, were fixed to 3% of the total volume of the emulsified fuel. We set the mixing ratio of $H_2O_2$ in the emulsified fuel as emulsified fuel(EF)0, EF2, EF12, and EF22. Further, we visualize the evaporation impinging spray using the Schlieren method. Based on the results of this study, we found that a higher temperature and injection pressure of the heating plate impingement led to the active diffusion of the fuel vapor, which promoted emulsified fuel evaporation. When the emulsified fuel is utilized in an actual engine, because of the temperature-drop effect of the combustion chamber, which is due to the evaporation of $H_2O_2$ in fuel and faster mixture formation is expected to decrease the engine emissions.

  • The waste-heat-recovery boiler with water spray (HR-B/WS) applies the heat exchange between the inlet air and exhaust gas with the water spray into the inlet air. The evaporation of water in the inlet air promotes heat recovery from the exhaust gas so that thermal efficiency can be improved by the enhanced condensing effect. The NOx emission can also be reduced by lowering the flame temperature due to the dilution effect of the water. In this study, the validity of this concept is examined by the practical boiler test performed with a 24 kW condensing boiler under the full load condition according to the water injection amount. The theoretical amount of water injection is calculated under the assumption of full evaporation of the sprayed water, which is calculated as 50 g/min. Since the injected water cannot evaporate fully in the actual system, the maximum water spray amount is set as 100 g/min. The results showed that the water injection can increase the thermal efficiency up to 95.59% and reduce NOx and CO emissions simultaneously to 8.9 ppm and 35 ppm at 0% of O2. Although the heat energy loss increased due to the unevaporated water, the increase in water injection amount caused higher thermal efficiency due to the increased amount of the evaporated water.

  • For the favorable performance of a D.I. diesel engine, it is important to improve the mixture formation process and the ensuing early stage of combustion process. In the present paper, high speed photography was employed to investigate the effectiveness of a cavity digged in a piston crown for some more useful utilization of air. The cavity would function to improve mixing of fuel and air by the increase of turbulence of air and by the impingement of fuel spray on the cavity wall. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) From an aspect of thermal efficiency, it is effective to inject the spray tangentially to the cavity wall to enlarge the area of spray evaporation. (2) some deductions obtained from previous investigations using a hot air stream duct are supported by the present results. For example, it is effective for the quick development of flames throughout the combustion chamber to mix the evaporated fuel of main spray with the intermediates brought about by the early stage of combustion of the preceded auxiliary fuel spray.

  • Jet-A spray and combustion were numerically analyzed in annular type combustor model using KIVA3V. The combustor geometry have 6 dilute holes. Swirl effect and thermal NO were considered in this investigation to analyze mixing and combustion characteristics. Fuel vapor, flame temperature, NO generation were investigated for various spray angle. As increase of spray angle, Jet-A vapor appeared uniformly in primary zone and evaporation rate was increased. Mixing between fuel vapor and ambient gas was enhanced as increase of spray angle. As a result, high temperature region appeared widely and thermal NO generation rate was increased.

  • A hybrid model consisting of a modified TAB (Taylor Analogy Breakup) model and DVM (Discrete Vortex Method) is proposed for numerical analysis of the evaporating spray phenomena in diesel engines. The simulation process of the hybrid model is divided into three steps. First, the droplet breakup of injected fuel is analyzed by using the modified TAB model. Second, spray evaporation is calculated based on the theory of Siebers'liquid length. The liquid length analysis of injected fuel is used to integrate the modified TAB model and DVM. Lastly, both ambient gas flow and inner vortex flow of injected fuel are analyzed by using DVM. An experiment with an evaporative free spray at the early stage of its injection was conducted under in-cylinder like conditions to examine an accuracy of the present hybrid model. The calculated results of the gas jet flow by DVM agree well with the experimental results. The calculated and experimental results all confirm that the ambient gas flow dominates the downstream diesel spray flow.

  • The objective of this study is to predict numerically the effect of intake humidification on the injected diesel fuel spray characteristics in a compression ignition engine. In this work, Wave model and Ducowicz model were applied as the break-up model and evaporation model, respectively. The amount of water vapor for the humidification was changed from 0% to 30% of injected fuel mass. The number of applied meshes was generated from 49,000 to 110,000. At the same time, the results of this work were compared in terms of spray tip penetration, SMD and equivalence ratio distributions. It was found that the cylinder temperature and cylinder pressure were decreased with increasing water vapor mass by vaporization latent heat and specific heat, however, the difference was very small. So, the spray tip penetration was not different by water vapor mass. Also, higher equivalence ratio distributions were observed with increasing water vapor mass by the improvement of fuel atomization.

  • In order to improve the overall efficiency and meet the emission regulations of boiler systems, the heat exchanging methods between inlet air and exhaust gas have been used in boiler systems, named as the waste-heat-recovery condensing boiler. Recently, to further improve the overall efficiency and to reduce the NOx emission simultaneously, the concept of the water injection into the inlet air is introduced. This study suggests the models for the optimized design parameters of water injection for waste-heat-recovery condensing boilers and performs the analysis regarding the water injection amount and droplet sizes for the optimized water injection. At first, the required amount of the water injection was estimated based on the 1st law of thermodynamics under the assumption of complete evaporation of the injected water. The result showed that the higher the inlet air and exhaust gas temperature into the heat exchanger, the larger the amount of injected water is needed. Then two droplet evaporation models were proposed to analyze the required droplet size of water injection for full evaporation of injected water: one is the evaporation model of droplet in the inlet air and the other is that on the wall of heat exchanger. Based on the results of two models, the maximum allowable droplet sizes of water injection were estimated in various boiler operating conditions with respect to the residence time of the inlet air in the heat exchanger.
