  • Three hundred gram of Korean ginseng root was extracted with 95% ethanol on a boiling water bath for about 300 hr. Evaporation of alcohol yieled 50.2g of dark brown residue which was used by dissolving 4 mg of the residue in 1 ml of physiological saline. The ginseng group and the saline group received each day 0.5 ml per 100 g body weight of ginseng extract and physiological saline, respectively. Both the ginseng and saline group with stress were exposed to positive radial acceleration (1∼29g), cold (5$^{\circ}C$, 0$^{\circ}C$ &-10$^{\circ}C$) and heat (35$^{\circ}C$) environment, and surgical stress. After termination of the last stress, the tolerance, body weight, visceral organ weight, basal metabolism rate, rectal temperature, the number of erythrocyte and leucocyte, hemoglobin level, hematocrit ratio, total serum protein content and it's fraction and the content of adrenal ascorbic acid in the experimental animal exposed to stress were measured and at the corresponding periods, the same measurements were also carried out with the ginseng and the saline groups without stress exposure (serving as control). Results obtained were as follows. 1. Administration of ginseng does depressed the decrease of the tolerance, body weight, visceral organ weight, basal metabolism rate, the number of erythrocyte, hemoglobin value, hematocrit ratio and the A/G ratio in the mice and rats exposed to various stress. 2. The change of the rectal temperature, eosinophile counts, total serum protein content and the content of adrenal ascorbic acid of ginseng group that exposured to various stress facilitates the reaction to, and accelerates the recovery from the stress. 3. Even after hypophysectomy which served the link between the central and the peripheral portion of the stress mechanism, the adrenal ascorbic acid content of ginseng group decreased significantly more than that of the saline group 30 min. after administration of ACTH, while the value approached the normal level significantly closer in the ginseng group than in the saline group 1 and 2 hr after ACTH administration. Judging from the above results, it is concluded that administration of ginseng extract tolerated the experimental animals under the environment of stressfu1 stmuli, although the ginseng has no significant influence upon the stress mechanism in the absence of stressful stimuli. The site of action of the ginseng appears to be in the peripheral portion of the stress mechanism.

  • Humidification of PEM fuel cells is necessary for enhancing their performance and lifetime. In this study, a humidification system was designed and tested; the system includes an air-supply tube (inner diameter: 75 mm) through which a nozzle can be directly inserted and a cyclonic separator for the removal of water droplets. Three types of nozzles were employed to study the influence of injection pressure, air flow rate, and spray direction on the humidification performance. To evaluate the humidification performance, the concept of humidification efficiency was defined. In the absence of an external heat source, latent heat for evaporation will be supplied by the own enthalpies of water and air. Thus, the amount of water sprayed from the nozzle is the most critical factor affecting the humidification efficiency. Water droplets were efficiently removed by a cyclonic separator, but re-entrainment occurred at high air flow rates. The absolute humidity and humidification efficiency were $21.29\;kJ/kg_{da}$ and 86.57%, respectively, under the following conditions: nozzle type PJ24; spray direction angle $90^{\circ}$; injection pressure 1200 kPa; air flow rate 6000 Nlpm.

  • Inclusion complexes of ketoconazole(KT) with ${\alpha}^_$, ${\beta}^_$cyclodextrin(CD) and $dimethy1-{\beta}-cyclodextrin$ (CD) and $dimethy1-{\beta}-cyclodextrin(DM{\beta}CD)$ as nasal absorption enhancer were prepared in 1: 2 molar ratios by freeze-drying and solvent evaporation methods. In order to compare with the intrinsic absorptivity of KT in the jejunum(J) and the nasal cavity(N), the in situ simultaneous perfusion method was employed. The in situ recirculation study revealed that KT-CD inclusion complexes with the greater stability constant and the faster dissolution rate proportionally increased the absorption of KT in the J and N of rats. The rank order of apparent KT permeability$(P_{app}\;:\;cm/sec\;{\time}\;1O^{-5}{\pm}S.E.)$, corrected by surface area of absorption, was $5.10{\pm}0.3(N,\; KT-DM{\beta}CD)$ )> $4.13{\pm}0.4(N,\;KT-{\beta}-CD)$ )> $3.52{\pm}0.2(N,\;KT-{\alpha}-CD)$ )> $2.76{\pm}0.3(J,\; KT-DM{\beta}CD)$ )> $2.61{\pm}0.5(J,\;KT-{\beta}-CD)$ )> $2.42{\pm}0.4(J,\;KT-{\alpha}-CD)$ at pH 4.0. The in crease in permeability of $KT-DM{\beta}CD$ inclusion complex was 2.6 folds in the J and 4.5 folds in the N when the perfusing solution was changed from the buffer(pH 4.0) to saline. The absorption rate of $KT-DM{\beta}CD$ inclusion complex after nasal administration was more rapid than those of ketoconazole alone and $KT-DM{\beta}CD$ inclusion complex after oral administration to rats. In comparision with an oral administration of ketoconazole suspension in corn oil, the relative bioavailability was calculated 137.3% for the oral and 195.0% for nasal $KT-DM{\beta}CD$ inclusion complex in rats. The present results suggest that $KT-DM{\beta}CD$ inclusion complex may serve as a potential nasal absorption enhancer for the nasal delivery of ketoconazole.

  • Biphenyldimethyldicarboxylate (PMC), which has been used to treat hepatitis, is insoluble in water, therefore it has low bioavailability after oral administration. For the purpose of increasing the dissolution rate of PMC, the physical mixtures and inclusion complexes of PMC and $dimethyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin\;(DM\;{\beta}CD)\;or\;hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin\;(HP{\beta}CD)$ in molar ratio of 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 were prepared by solvent evaporation method. Mixed micelles of PMC were prepared by reacting PMC with bile salts [sodium cholate(NaC), sodium glycocholate (NaGC)] and oleic acid (OA) or palmitoylcarnitine chloride(PCC). Chloroform/water partition coefficient (PC) of PMC was 36.14 in artificial gastric juice (AGJ) and 33.47 in artificial intestinal juice (AIJ), respectively, on the other hand octanol/water PC was 63.36. PMC formulation was prepared by reacting PMC with PEG400-glycerin system(95 : 5, 90 : 10, respectively) and PEG400-PEG4000-glycerin system (70 : 25 : 5, 65 : 25 : 10, respectively). Dissolution test was performed in AGJ and AIJ by paddle method at $37{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The dissolution rates of PMC tablets on the market were 5.74% and 8.26% at AGJ and AIJ, respectively and marketed PMC capsules were 22.14% and 28.64% at AGJ and AIJ, respectively. The dissolution rates of inclusion complexes of PMC with $DM{\beta}CD$ and $HP{\beta}CD$ in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 were more fast than those of corresponding physical mixtures. The decreasing order of dissolution rates was as follows; PMC-PEG400-PEG4000-glycerin formulation > PMC-PEG400-glycerin formulation > mixed micelles > CD inclusion complexes. The dissolution rates of PMC-PEG400-glycerin and PMC-PEG400-PEG4000-glycerin formulation were most fast and the percentage of dissolution was almost 100% within 20 minutes. And their dissolution rates after 120 minutes were markedly increased as compared with capsules on the market (4.0-fold and 3.2-fold in PMC-PEG400-glycerin formulation at AGJ and AIJ, respectively, and 4.8-fold and 3.7-fold in PMC-PEG400-PEG4000-glycerin formulation at AGJ and AIJ, respectively).

  • A fragrant microcapsule was prepared for use by students to reduce the stress of taking examinations. Rosmarinic acid was used as a fragrant oil which had the effect of relaxing stress, polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as a capsule wall material, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a stabilizer. The solvent evaporation method was used to form the microcapsule. The microcapsules were prepared by changing the stirring rate, the concentration of the stabilizer, and the molecular weight of PCL. The shape of the microcapsule was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The size of the microcapsule was reduced by increasing the stirring speed. The release rate of rosmarinic acid was decreased when the higher molecular weight PCL was used. When the prepared microcapsule was tested in an aromatherapy class, the microencapsulated fragrant oil had a longer release time than the original fragrant oil. The study data showed that this fragrant oil was effective for increasing concentration ability, reducing stress, increasing digestive power, and increasing memory for the students.

  • Since many process parameters of FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) are involved in forming multi-component amorphous silica film ($SiO_2-B_2O_3-P_2O_5-GeO_2$), it has not been easy to predict the optical, mechanical and thermal properties of deposited film from the simple process parameters, such as source flow rate. Furthermore, the prediction of final composition of film becomes even more difficult after sintering at high temperature due to the evaporation of volatile dopants. The motivation of the study was to clarify the quantitative relationship between simple process parameters such as the flow rate of source gases and resulting chemical composition of sintered film. Hence, the compositional analysis of silica soot by FTIR(Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy) and ICP-AES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry) under the control of the amount of dopant was carried out to obtain the quantitative composition. By measuring spectrum of absorbance from FTIR, the compositional change of B-O, Si-O, OH($H_2O$) in silica film was measured. The concentrations of these dopants were also measured by ICP-AES, which were compared with the FTIR result. The final quantitative relationship between simple process parameters and composition was deduced from the comparison between two results.

  • R-404A, which is used widely in small-scale ice makers, is scheduled to be phased out because of its high global warming potential. In this study, drop-in tests were conducted using R-448A and R-449A, which replace R-404A, to modify the outdoor air and supply water temperatures. The results showed that the daily ice production rate of R-404A was 5.3% higher than that of R-448A and 4.2% higher than that of R-449A. This was attributed to the larger vapor density of R-404A, which resulted in a larger mass flow rate in the system. Between R-448A and R-449A, R-448A yielded a larger amount of ice at low air and water temperatures, whereas R-449A yielded a larger amount of ice at high air and water temperatures. The daily power consumption of R-404A was approximately 10% larger than those of R-448A and R-449A. The resulting COPs of R-448A and R-449A was similar, only 3.0% larger than that of R-404A. The literature survey showed that the condensation or evaporation data of R-448A or R-449A are very limited, and research on this issue is recommended.

  • 3D printing is not only at the fundamental study and small-scale level, but has recently been producing buildings that can be inhabited by people. Buildings require a lot of cost and labor to work on the form work, but if 3D printing is applied to the building, the construction industry is received attention from technologies using 3D printing as it can reduce the construction period and cost. 3D printing technology for buildings can be divided into structural and non-structural materials, of which 3D printing is applied to non-structural materials. Because 3D printing needs to be additive manufacturing, control such as curing speed and workability is needed. Since cement mortar has a large shrinkage due to evaporation of water, cement polymer dispersion is used to improve the hardening speed, workability, and adhesion strength. The addition of polymer dispersion to cement mortar improves the tensile strength and brittleness between the cement hydrate and the polymer film. Cement mortar using polymer materials can be additive manufacturing but it has limited height that can be additive manufacturing due to its high density. When light-weight materials are mixed with polymer cement mortar, the density of polymer cement mortar is lowered and the height of additive manufacturing, so it is essential to use light-weight materials. However, the use of EVA redispersible polymer powder and light-weight materials, additional damage such as cracks in cement mortar can occur at high temperatures such as fires. This study produced a test specimen incorporating light-weight materials and EVA redispersible polymer powder to produce exterior building materials using 3D printing, and examined flame resistance performance through water absorption rate, length change rate, and cone calorimeter test and non-flammable test. From the test result, the test specimen using silica sand and light-weight aggregate showed good flame resistance performance, and if the EVA redispersible polymer powder is applied below 5%, it shows good flame resistance performance.

  • With the construction of Seoul National University (SNU), the Mt. Gwanak watershed has undergone some urbanization. As with other campus catchments, data related to the water cycle is extremely limited. Therefore, this study began by collecting hydrological and meteorological data using Atmos-41, a complex meteorological observation instrument. The observation results of Atmos-41 were validated by analyzing the statistical characteristics and confidence intervals based on the monthly variability of data from the Korea Meteorological Administration. Results of the previous research were used to validate the simulated surface runoff and infiltration using the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The potential evapotranspiration (PET) simulated by the SWMM was rectified by comparing it to the Atmos-41 observation data. Multiple regression analysis was employed to adjust for the fluctuations in precipitation, relative humidity, and wind speed because the calculated SWMM PET tends to be underestimated during periods of low temperatures. R2 increased from 0.54 to 0.80 when compared to the Atmos-41 PET. The rate of change in the water cycle as a consequence of the SNU's construction resulted in a 15.7% increase in surface runoff, a 14.2% decrease in infiltration rate, and a 1.6% decrease in evaporation.
