We propose the use of visible scintillation light for monitoring the X-ray CT in the gantry of a diagnostic CT for its performance test and maintenance works. We placed a disk of bare plastic scintillator disk in the gantry opening area of a helical X-ray CT. When we operated the CT, we could observe the emission of blue scintillation light from the scintillator in a dark room. Visible light was identified under all scanning conditions of diagnostic uses. As a result, we observed the direction and the spread of the incident X-ray in the scintillator. We also observed the change of the part of the scintillator where visible light was generated, and the move that took place associating with the rotation of the X-ray tube during one CT scan. On the basis of the observation, we examined the usefulness of the visible scintillation light as a convenient performance-evaluating tool as well as a maintenance tool of the CT.
As a basic machining process, turning is a widely used machining process in which a single-point cutting tool removes material from the surface of a rotating material. A common method of evaluating machining performance is to measure the surface roughness. In a turning operation, it is important to select cutting conditions for achieving high cutting performance. As a rule, cutting conditions can be classified into feed rate, depth of cut and insert radius. While cutting process even though cutting conditions are optimized, the average roughness can be deterioration due to wear of the cutting tool edge. In this study, the aim is to maintain the average roughness even though the cutting condition is irregularly changing within the predictable range due to the working environment. First, the surface roughness model influenced by cutting conditions is constructed based on the experimental results in a turning operation, Second, applying the sliding mode control theory to the turning operation model which is composed of the surface roughness model and the motor transfer function, the surface roughness is closed to the desired value. Finally, the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the computer simulation.
This research is to restructure the public assessment of housing management in a standardized fashion, and a self-administered questionnaire survey was employed for data collection and analysis. In doing so, all the assessment tools nationwide were identified and assembled to extract the items included in the survey form. The survey form was mailed out to local officers in charge of housing management and professional housing managers in the nation, and the responses were statistically analyzed in order to structure the standard assessment tool of housing management. This research classified 3 main areas (General Maintenance, Operation and Community Living) in evaluating the housing management performance, and identified 35 essential items and 52 optional items. The 35 essential items were drawn from the 16 categories of the 3 areas (11 items of 5 categories for General Maintenance, 7 items of 4 categories for Operation, and 17 items of 7 categories for Community Living), and the rest 52 optional items were from the 16 categories of the 3 areas (24 items of 7 categories for General Maintenance, 26 items of 7 categories for Operation, and 2 items of 2 categories for Community Living). While all the items in the research are quantifiable, it's suggested that qualitative measurements be complementarily utilized in the assessment not only to explore the best practices of housing management but also to refine and modify the standardized tool in response to various environmental changes. As the public assessment of housing management is context-sensitive and critically related to local housing profile, the continuous implementation of the assessment will facilitate shifting the housing paradigm from production and consumption to management and reproduction.
The demands of the large scale machine tools, for instance, such as planomiller, turning machine, boring machine, NC machine, have been gradually increased in recent years. As the performances of machine tools and/or cutting tools are advanced, it is possible to perform high-speed and high-precision cutting works. The effective treatment of wet chip, which is discharged from cutting works, becomes very important problems. Therefore, this study is forced on the design of large scale machine tools using CATIA V5R18 and analysis of cutter, which is considered as essential equipment in large scale machine tools, using MSC.Nastran & MSC.Patran. Especially, the relations between tolerated load of cutter, driving horse power and rpm of driving shaft in chip processing system are investigated through analysis. As the results, the reliability of design could be improved by evaluating simulated numerical values, it showed that tolerated loads of supported part and edged part of cutter are 87,000N and 14,450N, respectively.
Recently, the high-speed and intelligence technology of machine tools are developed for the high efficiency of productivity Under the operating condition from the high-speed of machine tools, the various failure modes can occur in core units of manufacturing system. Therefore it is for the reliability concept of machine tool to be required in a design level. And the above-stated technology must be accommodated in the feeding and spindle subsystem, etc those are the core units of machine tools. In this study, we are developed the test-bed of sliding cover (C-plate) in order to evaluating reliability and estimating failure modes of feeding subsystem under operating conditions. The reliability experiment using the developed test-bed and the additional structural analysis executed on single and double structure. We found out the weak parts of sliding cover and were able to predict a life cycle from the experiment results. In this study, we propose the new C-plate model with double link structure to apply the high-speed machine tool in the fundamental guideline.
In this study, the Comet assay (evaluation of DNA damage) used the fish hepatocellular carinoma cell, PLHC-1, was tried to the sediment extract obtained from freshwater to understand its applicability as a tool for monitoring sediment toxicity. In parallel, induced EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin- O-deethylase) activity and DNA damage (TEM values) in PLHC-1 cells were measured for establishing the tandem endpoints of the PLHC-1cell test to test the ecotoxicity of sediment. Among several study sites in a small river passed through downtown and industrial park area, one of them, site B, showed a higher level of EROD activity and DNA damage than other sites. It indicates that a tandem endpoints of PLHC-1 cells could be useful tools for assessing the toxicity of sediment. The sensitivity of Comet assay with PLHC-1 cells was a little higher than that with a blood cell of frog tadpoles to the solvent extract of sediment. According to the results, a PLHC-1 cell-Comet assay could be used as a useful tool for evaluating ecotoxicity of the freshwater sediment. In addition, more detailed studies are needed to the contaminated site.
Cement-grouts are injected into limestone cavities beneath the road in the project area, in order to improve strength and reduce permeability; the extent to which grout has penetrated in cavities need to be monitored in order to determined effectiveness of cement-grout. Geophysical approaches, offer great potential for monitoring the grout injection process in a fast and cost-effective way as well as showing whether the grout has successfully achieved the target. This paper presents the ability of surface electrical resistivity to investigate the verification of the grout placement. In order to image the cement-grout, time-lapse surface electrical resistivity surveys were conducted to compare electrical resistivity images before and after injection. Cement-grout was imaged as anomalies exhibiting low resistivity than the surrounding rocks. In accordance with field monitoring, laboratory study was also designed to monitor the resistivity changes of cement-grout specimens with time-lapse. Time-lapse laboratory measurements indicated that electrical methods are good tool to identify the grouted zone. Pre-and post grouting electrical images showed significant changes in subsurface resistivity at grouted zone. The study showed that electrical resistivity imaging technology can be a useful tool for detecting and evaluating changes in subsurface resistivity due to the injection of the grout.
Purpose: This study was done to develop a performance appraisal tool (PAT) for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) registered nurses (RNs). Methods: The PAT was developed in three steps: 1) a standard of NICU nursing was established; 2) a draft was made; and 3) the PAT was ratified and its reliability and validity were tested. Results: The standard of practice of NICU nursing was predominantly based on role description and responsibilities for nurses. We identified 4 domains of nursing: professional practice, education, research, and leadership. The validity score for each item ranged from 3.93 to 3.27. The PAT consisted of 76 indicators, 49 reflecting components of professional practice, 5 related to responsibility for education, 3 representing research, and 19 relating to leadership. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ averaged 0.99 for the 76 items. Conclusions: The PAT for NICU RNs that we created was found to be reliable and valid. This PAT would be very useful in evaluating nursing performance and facilitate the professional growth of nurses.
In recent years, pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment have become a matter of increasing public concern. Environmental risk assessment (ERA), including an exposure assessment, is considered the best scientifically based approach for evaluating the potential effects of pharmaceuticals on ecosystems. Computerized exposure models constitute an important tool in predicting environmental exposures of pharmaceuticals. This paper presents the applicability of an exposure model by comparing measured data of selected pharmaceuticals with predicted environmental concentrations from an exposure model. $PhATE^{TM}$ (Pharmaceutical Assessment and Transport Evaluation) model developed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) was adapted to run simulations for the Keum River. A set of 7 pharmaceuticals of high production in Korea was modeled. The PECs generated by the $PhATE^{TM}$ model that were then compared to the measured concentrations. The $PhATE^{TM}$ model predicted concentrations for 7 pharmaceuticals including acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, erythromycin, ibuprofen, lincomycin, mefenamic acid, and naproxen were in good agreement with actual measured concentrations, which demonstrated the utility of $PhATE^{TM}$ as a predictive tool. In conclusion, $PhATE^{TM}$, although it does not intend to accurately represent reality, could be utilized for rapid predictions of the environmental concentrations of pharmaceuticals.
The ability to maintain an upright position during quiet standing is a useful motor skill. The Sensory Organization Test (SOT) is a timed balance test that evaluates somatosensory, visual, and vestibular function for maintenance of upright posture. The Fugl-Meyer Sensorimotor Assessment (FMSA) balance subscale is the functional status assessment that indicates amount of assistance needed during various balance tasks. Functional Independence Measure (FIM) is the functional status assessment tool and FIM can be used clinically as an outcome measure. The purpose of this study was to see if the SOT can be used as a evaluation tool to measure hemiplegic patients' balance ability. Thirty-six patients with hemiplegia participated in this study. SOT scores were significantly correlated with FMSA balance scores and FIM scores(p<0.05). However correlation coefficients were not so high (r=0.60, and r=0.51, respectively). Therefore, further study is needed to verify the SOT's usefulness when physical therapists are evaluating for hemiplegic patients' balance ability.
