  • In this study we take a closer look at the diseases that afflicted Japanese police officers who were stationed in a remote mountainous region of Taiwan from 1921 to 1944. Samples were taken from the latrine at the Huabanuo police outpost, and analyzed for the eggs of intestinal parasites, using microscopy and ELISA. The eggs of Eurytrema sp., (possibly E. pancreaticum), whipworm and roundworm were shown to be present. True infection with Eurytrema would indicate that the policemen ate uncooked grasshoppers and crickets infected with the parasite. However, false parasitism might also occur if the policemen ate the uncooked intestines of infected cattle, and the Eurytrema eggs passed through the human intestines. These findings provide an insight into the diet and health of the Japanese colonists in Taiwan nearly a century ago.

  • Histopathological changes in the pancreas of bovine eurytremiasis were dilatation and thickning of the pancreatic ducts inwhich infiltration of eosinophils and lymphocytes was prominent. The mucous epithelium showed papilliferous and adenomatoid hyperplasia. Proliferation of tissue mast cells in the mucosa propria of the pancreatic ducts was recognized. In addition, granulomatous inflammation was accompanied with the death of Eurytrema in the pancreatic ducts. Granuloma formation around Eurytrema eggs which were embolized in the lung of rabbit was observed on 15 and 20 days after injection.

  • Chromosomes of gonadal tissues from Fasciola spp, Eurytrema pancreaticum and Calicophoron calicophorum occurred Korean cattle were egamined using modified air-drying method. To compare their phenotype with three different genotypes among Fasciola spp, the adult and egg si2e were measured since they have been known as important taxonomical characters. The results obtained were as followed; Cattle liver fluke, Fasciola spp were classified into three types based on their chromosomal complements such as individual with 2o chromosome(diploid), 30 chromosome(triploid) and 20/30 mosaic constitution(mixoploid). The propotions of appearance of three types were 40.00%, 54.29% and 5.71%, respectively. The frequency of three types in type I which was regarded as F gigantica were 58.82% for diploid, 35.29% for triploid and 5.88% for mixoploid, but in type II which was regarded as F hepatica were 72.2% for triploid, 22.22% for diploid and 5.56% for mixoploid. Egg length of triploid forms was significantly larger than that of diploid forms and egg size of mixoploid forms was similiar to that of triploid forms. Worm size of triploid forms was larger than that of diploid forms and was more similar to that of mixoploid forms, but the statistical data were not significant. Diploid chromosome consisted of one pair of metacentric chromosome(m), four pairs of submetacentric chromosomes(sm), five pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes(st), while triploid chromosome consisted of one pair of metacentric chromosome, seven pairs of submetacen.tric chromosomes, one pair of subtelocentric chromosome and telocentric chromosome(t), respectively. In mixoploid chromosome, constitution of the chromosomes of diploid or triploid cell was consistent with that of diploid or triploid. Chromosomes of gonadal tissues from pancreatic fluke, Eurytrema pancreaticum consisted of 13 pairs of homologs(2n=26, n=13). The mitotic and meiotic divisions were observed frequently. In the mitotic metaphase, Karyotype consisted of five pairs of metacentric chromosomes, four pairs of submetacentric chromosomes, three pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes and one pair of telocentric chromosome. Chromosomes of gonadal tissues from stomach fluke, Calicvphoron calicophorum consisted of 9 pairs of homologs(2n=18, n=9). The meiotic divisions was frequently observed, but mitotic divisions was rare. In the mitotic metaphase, Karyotype consisted of two pairs of metacentric chromosomes, three pairs of submetacentric chromosomes and four pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. Karyotype of Calicophoron calicophorum differed from that of Japanese C calicophorum which was similar to that of Paramphistomum cervi of Korean cattle. Though that of Calicophoron calicophorum of Korean cattle was similar to that of Paramphistomum explanatum of Korean cattle, that have been recognized to be a different species of fluke.

  • The anthelmentic effects of Fuadin (sodium antimony-III-bis-pyrocatechin-disulphonate), Bithionol 2-2-thiobis 4,6-dichlorophenol)), hexachlorethane and carbon tetrachloride were studied on Eurytrema pancreaticum infected in sheep and goats. The evaluation on the effects was based upon the egg reduction in the feces of the experimental animals administered the drugs. The number of eggs per 5gm. of the feces was respectively calculated before the treatments, and the follw-up for the egg reductions was carried out over a period of three or four weeks(calculated twice a week). Oral administration of Bithionol (once a day for 2 succeed days, at the rate of 75 mg per kg of bady weight) and of hexachlorethane (once a day, at the rate of 300ml per kg of body weight) did not reveal any egg reduction in sheep host. Intramuscular injection of carbon tetrachloride with olive oil (once a day, at the rate of 0.05ml per kg of body weight) did not show the egg reduction in goats. Intramuscular injections of Fuadin for 5 days (the dosage schedule was 0.5ml at 1st day, 1.0ml at 2nd and 3rd day, 1.5ml at 4th and 5th day, to amount of 5.5ml) were completely devoid the fluke eggs in the feces of goats on 4 weeks after each treatment. Throughout the studies, Fuadin was only proved its anthelmintic effect to the goats infected with E. pancreaticum. On the other hand, Bithional, hexachlorethane and carbon tetrachloride did not reveal any effect as Fuadin showed.

  • Researches to determine the infectious status on the pancreatic fluke, Eurytrema pancreaticum(Janson 1889) Looss, 1907, were made into several slaughter hauses at four different districts through seven years from 1963 to 1969. The infection rate showed 2962 positive of 5974 heads (49.6%) of cattle at the Seoul first slaughter hause in Seoul, 881 positive of 1021 heads (86.3%) in Cheju, and six(6) positive of 56 heads (11.1%) at Suwon, 58 positive of 306 heads(19.0%)at Joenju. The infection rate 53.1%, (2907 positive heads of total 7357 heads exammed) is the representative infection rate at the cattle eurytremiasis in Korea. It showed little variation through a year and was increased as compared with those of the past period, from 1915 to 1945. Fecal examinations in order to find out the local distribution of the pancreatic fluke were conducted on cattle, sheep, and goats raised in four districts, showing two(2) of 269 heads (0.7%) in Kyonggi-do, 41 of 212 heads (19.3%) in Cheju-do, and negative in both Chungnam-do and Joenbuk-do. When an artificial infection wss performed on rabbits and goats with metacercaria of the pancreatic fluke, Parenchyma of their pancreas were degenerated and the ducts were dilated. When cattle and sheep were infected naturally, the pancreatic ducts were also dilated, the wall was thickened, and adenomatous and epithelial hyperplasia was appeared. The conclusion, putting the foregoing pathological changes, has been arrived at chronic hyperplastic pancreatitis in the eurytremiasis of cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits.

  • The techniques which have been used for the fecal examination of ruminant infected with the pancreatic flukes, Eurytrema Pancreaticum, were reviewer in their efficiency to detect the ova. One of modified fecal examination: H.F.E. (hydrochloric acid-formalin-ether) sedimentation method was devised in this study. Efficiency in the detecting ability of the fluke eggs with H.F.E. sedimentation method was determined by a series of repeat tests. Among 20 head of cattle known to harbor 1-5 adult worms of the pancreatic fluke, 75% of the infected cattle were detected, and among 60 head of cattle known to harbor more than 6 adult worms, 95% of the infected cattle were detected with H.F.E. sedimentation method. The procedures of the H.F.E. sedimentation method are as follows; 1) Take the sample 5-10 gm., emulsify throughly with 20 ml. of 50% hydrochloric acid in a cup. 2) Strain this mixture through one or two layers of wet surgical gauze into 15ml. centrifuge tube. 3) Washing the cup with 5ml. of 50% hydrochloric acid and strain again. 4) Centrifuge at 2,300 rpm. for 2 minutes. 5) Pour off the supernatant fluid. 6) After the sediment mixed with 10% formalin, stand for 5 minutes. 7) Add 2-3ml. of ether, shake vigorously up and down, after the top of the tube covered with thumb. 8) Centrifuge at 2,300 rpm. for 2 minutes. 9) Loosen the fecal plug in the tube by ringing with an applicator stick. 10) Quickly, but carefully, pour of all, but the bottom layer of sediment. 11) Thoroughly mix the sediment, pour on a slide (or pick up it with a pipett), mount with a cover glass. 12) Examine carefully.
