  • The preliminary data reduction, analysis and first results from the Herschel survey of the AKARI NEP field are presented. Herschel SPIRE observations of the NEP-Wide region and PACS observations of the NEP-Deep region have yielded galaxy catalogues of 4000 and 900 sources respectively down to flux density levels of approximately 15 mJy at 100-250 microns. Source counts produced from these catalogues reach cosmologically significant depths tracing the evolutionary upturn and turnover in the source counts. The source counts are in agreement with other large area surveys carried out with Herschel bridging the gap between the shallow and deep Herschel surveys.

  • This paper deals with challenges of Mongolian government regarding Economic Development Plan (hereafter EDP). EDP has a long history, appearing first in the socialist countries, then in European countries following the European Reconstruction Plan after the Second World War, and then in many developing countries after they gained independence from the colonial rule. Major challenges of the Mongolian EDP are largely related to the absence or lack of integrated approach. We will propose a new integrated framework based on the approach suggested by UNDP. The new framework consists of 5 core areas; 1) institutions and governance, 2) evidence-based and empirically backed policy options, 3) development of budgeting and financial system, 4) and monitoring and evaluation (M&E), 5) capacity development. In order to identify challenges in Mongolia, the new integrated approach was applied to diagnose current states. To understand current states of EDP in Mongolia, survey regarding EDP in Mongolia was conducted for the 43 officials of Ministry of Finance. The same approach was applied for Five-Year Economic Development Plans in Korea to compare performances with EDP in Mongolia. On the basis of comparative analysis of EDPs in Mongolia and Korea, some lessons are suggested.

  • Galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationally bound systems, are an important means to place constraints on cosmological models. Moreover, they are excellent places to test galaxy evolution models in connection to the environments. To this day, massive clusters have been found unexpectedly(Kang & Im 2009, Durret et al. 2011, Tashikawa et al. 2012) and evolution of galaxies in cluster have been still controversial (Elbaz et al. 2007, Cooper et al. 2008, Tran et al. 2009). Finding galaxy cluster candidates in a wide, deep imaging survey data will enable us to solve the such issues of modern extragalactic astronomy. We have used multi-wavelength data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Deep Extragalactic Survey (UKIDSS DXS/J and K bands), Spitzer Wise-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE/two mid-infrared bands), the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (PAN-STARRS/ g, r, i, z, y bands) and Infrared Medium-deep Survey(IMS/J band). We report new candidates of galaxy clusters and properties of their member galaxies in one of the wide and deep survey fields ELAIS-N1, European Large Area ISO Survey North1, covering sky area of $8.75deg^2$.

  • Galaxy clusters, the largest gravitationally bound systems, are an important means to place constraints on cosmological models. Moreover, they are excellent places to test galaxy evolution models in connection to the environments. To this day, massive clusters have been found unexpectedly at high redshfit (Kang & Im 2009, Durret et al. 2011, Tashikawa et al. 2012), and evolution of galaxies in cluster has not been fully understood. Finding galaxy cluster candidates at z > 1 in wide, deep imaging survey data will enable us to solve such issues of modern extragalactic astronomy. We report new candidates of galaxy clusters in the wide and deep survey fields, European Large Area ISO Survey North1(ELAIS-N1) and North2(ELAIS-N2) fields, covering sky area of $8.75deg^2$ and $4.85deg^2$ each. We also suggest a new useful colour-colour selection technique to separate 1 < z < 2 galaxies from low-z galaxies by combining multi-wavelength data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Deep Extragalactic Survey (UKIDSS DXS, JK bands), Spitzer Wise-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE, Optical-Infrared bands), Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT, z band) and Infrared Medium-deep Survey(IMS, J band).

  • We describe a survey of nearby core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion sites using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) techniques, which is an extension of the work described in Kuncarayakti et al. (2013). The project aims to constrain SN progenitor properties based on the study of the immediate environment of the SN. The stellar populations present at the SN explosion sites are studied by means of integral field spectroscopy, which enables the acquisition of both spatial and spectral information of the object simultaneously. The spectrum of the SN parent stellar population gives an estimate of its age and metallicity. With this information, the initial mass and metallicity of the once coeval SN progenitor star are derived. While the survey is mostly done in optical, the additional utilization of near-infrared integral field spectroscopy assisted with adaptive optics (AO) enables us to examine the explosion sites in high spatial detail, down to a few parsecs. This work is being carried out using multiple 2-8 m class telescopes equipped with integral field spectrographs in Chile and Hawaii.

  • Differences in food and nutrient intake among Korean adults based on different stress levels were investigated using information obtained from 7,370 adults who participated in the 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. The twenty-four hour recall method was used for this dietary survey. Data pertaining to indivisual stress levels were collected by means of interviews as part of the National Health Behavior Survey. Following the analysis of variance, Duncan's Multiple Range Test was used to test the differences in food and nutrient intake among groups with different levels of stress. Eighty-three percent of the study subjects were reported to have a certain level of stress. Unlike the observations made in European and American studies, there were no significant differences observed in food and nutrient intake based on the stress levels among Korean adults of either sexes. These results may imply that even though stress was clustered with other health related behavior, the association between food intake and stress among Koreans was very weak. • There are common features, in both imaging surveys and image processing, between astronomical observations and remote sensing. Handling large amounts of data, in an easy and fast way, has become a common issue. Implementing pipeline software can be a solution to the problem, one which allows the processing of various kinds of data automatically. As a case study, the development of pipeline software for the EIS (European Southern Observatory Imaging Survey) is introduced. The EIS team has been conducting a sky survey to provide candidate targets to the 250 VLTs (Very Large Telescopes) observations. The survey data have been processed in a sequence of five major data corrections and reductions, i.e. preprocessing, flat fielding, photometric and astrometric corrections, source extraction, and coaddition. The processed data are eventually distributed to the users. In order to provide automatic processing of the vast volume of observed data, pipeline software has been developed. Because of the complexity of objects and different characteristic of each process, it was necessary to analyze the whole works of the EIS survey program. The overall tasks of the EIS are identified, and the scheme of the EIS pipeline software is defined. The system structure and the processes are presented, and in-depth flow charts are analyzed. During the analyses, it was revealed that handling the data flow and managing the database are important for the data processing. These analyses may also be applied to many other fields which require image processing.
